    That clam doesn't look happy, but the only thing you can do is give it more light. It's too low on the tank and in a corner, it may not be recieving enough light. They don't warn you when they are starving, they suddenly die.

    Add a second back up algae scrubber to reduce nitrates...then slowly take it offline afterwards...🤷🏾‍♂️

    I tried to start my tank the natural way but my chaeto kept on dying. I like nopox and went back to it. It was an obstacle to keep nutrients in the tank. I just started using reef energy in combination with tiny amounts of aquaforest iron and potassium (substitute for red sea coral care prog) along with seachem trace. But my tank is much smaller 25g lagoon. Seems to be working good after only a week.

    because of whats open at what isnt, id say its something cyclical as opposed to quantitative. have your lps grown much? maybe add a powerhead to the bottom rear to cause more flow near the sandbed... another thing with that pattern is temperature. did this start when the seasons changed? A heater being a degree too high can have this exact reaction.

    Tank and corals looks great. Remember high nutrients along with high Alkanility (10-12 dKh ) makes corals happy and grows faster especially sps.

    Damn that 120 gallon was nice. I wish you would've just quartaine everything before you put it in the this fish tank. it probably would've token a little longer but I guarantee you it would've been worth it.

    Yo, I’ve been wanting to get back into the hobby after I lost my tank a year ago. But I’ve reached a wall, I don’t know if I want to do Saltwater (I know less and funds are low) or freshwater (what I have experience in)? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated and I do plan on documenting my experience as well as I love the idea after watching you videos. Any suggestions would be nice, thanks for sharing your experience.

    CJ, great video, couldn't agree more, cant rely on your eyes to see if something is wrong, sometimes people (including myself) may even test and not realize that something is wrong, nutrients being too low instead of too high for example. Happy reefing bro!

    Funny how when the similar thing happened to me my corals looked better than ever...I decided to keep the numbers up but the new problem is that when I kept the nitrates and phosphates at around 50 and 0.20 with pretty strong lighting like the radions even at a lower percentage Within a month a had hair algae spreading like wild fire.....It’s a give and take...now even when I dropped the nutrients slowly I’m still battling the GHA... it got a foot hold now and is just using up that constant little bit of nutrients to stay alive....Ahhhh such a pain in the ass but you gotta persevere

    I do a 12liter water change every 3 or 4 days. But i dont put the water straight into the display tank i pour it into the overflow and let it mix in with the saltwater for about 10 or so minutes. No corals close up when the return pump is turn back on. Just an idea for you.

    Im glad your algae scrubber is back up and running well for you CJ. I like your natural approach to your tank, and I feel the same way with the exception of adding bottled bacteria. I think I like to use it to help keep a good balance of bacteria. Maybe its because my system is a bit newer, but I also rely on water changes. Hoping that I see a ton of continued growth that I am already seeing in my tank. Keep up the great work, and keep being Eazy

    CJ water changes are the simplest and easiest way to fix issues in a tank. When I see problems I do a set of big water changes, usually fixes most issues.

    • @ooShiGuyoo
      @ooShiGuyoo 6 років тому

      +1 In certain cases, they're a must. CJ, IME, I think you're overestimating the potential negative changes a water change can have on your system. That said, best of luck on getting this worked out! Hoping for the best!

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS  6 років тому +3

      Big changes are something I’m avoiding... if I do resort to water changes they will be small over time. And I’ll let test results drive how many I end up doing... been down the road of large water changes.. didn’t end well for a dozen acros.. gotta be careful when you do things in excess

    • @brandywine3235
      @brandywine3235 6 років тому

      If the water you are changing the same as the water your are putting in, there should be no issues. I use regular Red Sea salt and keep my parameter's the same as the salts. So when I change my water nothing changes. I think you in your chase, I would change 20 percent every two weeks.

    • @Desmo1
      @Desmo1 6 років тому +1

      IMO water changes don't "Fix" anything, they're just a bandaid on the Real Problem. You're essentially diluting the issue momentarily with water changes but the problem still exists and will climb right back up in a short time if not addressed properly.

    • @brandywine3235
      @brandywine3235 6 років тому

      Water changes put you tank back in balance. That's the whole point in water changes. Its a way to export nutrients and replenish elements. Its not a band aid. How do you propose to remove it from your tank? Chemicals? Yes you do need to find the source if you have a heavy metal or nutrient issue. But go look at most reef forums, the first thing the tell you to do is do some water changes.

  • @michaelhicks9089
    @michaelhicks9089 6 років тому

    My guess is whatever killed your algae scrubber also killed some of the beneficial bacteria in your system. The dead bacteria is likely creating a spike in your nutrients and your system can’t process the bioload it once did until the bacteria population replenishes itself. I would suggest adding some Dr. Tim’s bacteria and exercising patience as your bacteria population recovers.

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS  6 років тому

      Michael Hicks not sure if dr tim bacteria provides the denitrifying bacteria needed to reduce nitrates. I haven’t used it before but I believed it was purely nitrifying bacteria which in this case wouldn’t help me. In ether case I’d resort to water changes before bacteria.. the algae melting leached the end result not the beginning of the nitrogen cycle... in a way your right about tank being able to not process the nitrate spike but I’m approaching this with a diff mentality. Thanks for the feedback and watching 🤙🏾

    Hey bro as I mention before I'm a natural type approach person, you can do small 5% water change every day or every other day another plan is do a 30% water change weekly. Years ago I've done this method but just watch your fluctuations I didn't have a lot of sps as you do I did have a lot of gorgonians No chemicals. I know you will recover cj that's my experience be easy bro tank awesome as always.

    CJ I would definitely recommend weekly small 10 gallon water changes. I think it helps stabilize the tank more than it destabilizes it. I do that for my 120 mixed reef.
    How are you replinishing other trace elements? Does the the calcium reactor provide everything?
    The tank is looking good. Love all of the red Lobo. Im excited to see some growth.

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS  6 років тому

      texastitan1989 calcium reactor provides majority and I also dose Kent marine trace elements .. and acropower / aquavitro fuel aminos when needed
      Prob with dosing is waters changes also remove what your putting in. So it’s a case of ether or and not both. Otherwise your wasting money or salt or bottles

    IMO I think at the rate you're adding bi-load to the tank and how new it is, I don't think it's logical to think the tank is going to handle it all without problems using the natural method you employ. I'd add some bacteria weekly from a bottle and carbon dose a small bit and then you can counteract the non natural speed at which your tank is moving. I also don't think that once you start using something like Nopox and or bacteria that its very hard to stop, those things are boosting the bacterias in the tank while the population grows and becomes stable BUT you need to have media where the population can remain in mass like a media brick or reactor full of something. As the tank matures you can dial back this dosing granted you've given bacteria a stable place to live.

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS  6 років тому

      gil I would agree with you to certain extent. The problem is a video like this would never cover every detail. I’ll say this... I’m over stocked and up until this recent event (scrubber issue and light change) I had issues even keeping nitrates detectable.. I’m over filtering with 5L of pond matrix to go with the 80lbs pukani. This is on top of the skimmer and algae scrubber. Also have to factor in the corals consuming these nutrients once they start growing again. Carbon dosing is debatable.. I’ll stick to keeping my tank free if it and enjoy the ride. Thanks for the comment and watching as always Gil 😎🤙🏾

    • @ausreefguy5362
      @ausreefguy5362 6 років тому

      yeah id skip the carbon dosing too whats the point when the whole idea is to grow algae "in the scrubber" for nutrient export .. seems counter productive to me.

    Tank looks awesome buds...how often do you test your nutrients (NO3 & PO4). For them to jump that high would have taken some time to climb i guess. I bet the root cause is dying of your Algae Scrubber because that was your main defence line to pull the nutrients off your tank. For any algae generating method refugium, algae scrubber or chaeto reactor to die leads to 2 variables either there is not enough nutrients in the tank to pull it off OR the light. You obviously have lot of nutrients so check your lights just in case...When u killed aiptasia with kalkwasser paste keep an eye out on your Ph too...Good luck bro been there i was at 100ppm at one time with Nitrates and Phosphates a little extra care and it came down...

      Probably growth was so much, it detached and fell off. Thick growth should be harvested weekly.

    Try to harvest more often... the thick growth can grow even more then.

    Do you feed your coral reef roids? My coral seem to love it, but nutrients spike after using.

      They are in episode 30 but not 29 so I'm guessing you got them in between the 2 episodes

      I definitely believe there's more than one way to run a tank :-)

    I'm curious what you think of skimming now.. seems like you're algae scrubber was doing 99% of the work. Do you think a skimmer is unnecessary with a scrubber or refugium?

    • @CJSAQUARIUMS
      @CJSAQUARIUMS  6 років тому

      elisa %99 is a stretch... but I do see value in running both. I believe each exports diff things from my system... together they are the ultimate export system. One fails my tank fails

      They do uptake different things. Skimmers remove waste BEFORE it breaks down. Algae scrubbers remove them AFTER they breakdown into N and P
