I'm 70 years old and have purchased all of Chris's courses. If I can make marked improvement in my painting at my age, anyone can. Please do yourself a favour all of you who think you cannot paint, buy his courses or become a patreon member if that is what you prefer. And a huge thank you to you Chris once again.😊
Just a note about contrast... True. Contrast draws the eye of the viewer. There are a number of other ways to create contrast beside contrast of values ( light vs. dark ) You can contrast highly saturated color with muted neutral color. You can make objects stand out by making their edges sharp and their features well defined ...contrasting them with more blurred areas. Cool colors contrast with warm colors etc. Thanks for your clear and helpful Videos !
I discovered your channel very recently, and I have already felt an absurd improvement in my learning to paint. I am managing to apply your tips for digital painting and I have managed to improve a lot. You are one of the best painting teachers I have ever met here on UA-cam, your teaching is excellent, thank you very much for teaching us so much on this channel. A big hug from Brazil! :)
Exact same story from me! Just in Michigan not Brazil :) I love his ability to convey information in the same way he paints. He says enough to make a point but it's not a myriad of fine details that will confuse you. I'm highly selective of who I watch and follow, and you have my subscription!
Love that you didi it in impressionist style bc I'm trying to wrap my head around that right now. I love your channel so much. You & Tischler are beyond helpful. I wish you could do some sort of fun live episode together where you guys talk about art, the UA-cam experience, and anything!
Chris, I just love everything you post but especially your landscape lessons. I wish you could turn this into a series where you take a random photo and show us how you go about planning the composition. Composition is the most fascinating aspect of making art imo.
I purchased Chris 's paint and drawing classes and I am very impressed and happy with his teaching style and content of advice and instructions. I did 10 years of oil, tonal realism, classes and while I can paint very accurate copies of subject, I was never taught technically about what I was doing - Values, perspective, etc. Chris has actually taught me things that help me understand what I am doing and has made so much simpler and actually more fun. I highly recommend his classes to anyone, beginners and 10yo " trained" . Excellent work, Chris.
I just begun, I'm only with my fifth painting by now. I have seen a lot of UA-cam tutorials, but you're my absolute favourite. I really learnt so many things, from your channel. So thanks!
This is the first time I’ve come across this bloke and I’m impressed by the clarity of what he says, the brevity of the video (I didn’t lose concentration once- that’s quite an achievement), the number of examples and the structured way he takes us through it. Good stuff!
Have been watching your vids for a couple weeks now and applying them to my portraits, but still felt skeptical about trying landscapes. This one made me feel so much more confident. You're an excellent teacher, thank you for these videos!!!
Although I paint in acrylics, your guidance and tips, especially on the fundamentals such as these have been so helpful to me. I’ve noticed a marked improvement by following these! And your instruction is so clear and makes sense. I appreciate that you give examples! As a visual and kinesthetic learning, that is so helpful to !!! So THANK YOU for sharing your talent and experience! ❤
Thank you for everything you do! Your teaching methods have really resonated with me. I've taken many different types of art classes, especially in college. I've learned more from your content than I ever did in a classroom. I really appreciate all of your knowledge and your hard work to share it with us 🙂
A truly excellent video. I've been watching (and enjoying) your videos for a while now. And for where I am presently on my painting journey, this is one of your best "aha!" tip videos for me for a few key points. First, the focal point highlighting tip with the edges between your darkest darks and lightest lights. And the second is related with the dynamically balanced dark (or light) spaces creating an interesting composition that leads to your focal point. But I think this statement is what really hit home with me and made me watch that whole segment again: "I don't want to waste a painting on a bad composition.". I always knew that composition was important for landscapes or whatever the subject, but you finally had things click for me that bad composition kills a painting's effectiveness as fundamentally as bad proportions ruins a portrait. Thanks for your fantastic content. Cheers!
Thankyou Chris, wonderful tips on composition, simplifying and interpreting a photo not copying it. Some photos don't necessarily make a great painting as the are but it's the artist Job to strive to make the painting always better than the photo.
Just wanted to say that I love your channel, I'm so inspired by you- and I've fully set up my art studio now with oil paint (I used to do acrylic) i've always wanted to do oil but it intimidated me and I'm so thankful your your careful and well laid out instruction. do you offer in person classes?
The picture behind you is not 50 Shades by Nicolas Cage? Ôk. not quite 50., but Is funny. the video is very informative and educational, thank you very much
hello, I am 67, never had ANY art training and even less talent, so I am an absolute beginner. I live in an apartment so space is limited and I am lazy about cleaning up tools so I discover a digital painting program called Rebelle which simulates oils, watercolors, charcoal, many different types of canvas, increase/decrease impasto. I have 15 years of 3D as a hobbyist behind me so I understand some of the basic concepts of things like perspective. I am very interested in painting. your courses look right for me.
Plenty of supplies available for under $20. But you may have to put back the beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets to stay in budget. Obviously, you have cash to access Wi-Fi. If it’s not important to you, don’t whine, we all have choices.
I love that we live in a time where this guy can just go on youtubeand teach. You have amazing talent, friend.
Thanks!

Wow! I love seeing this!
Wow Chris...thankyou, you are inspiring. I'm 75 with a degree in fine art and still painting and you are teaching me with every one of your videos.

I do all that with 3 paintings in my landscape course 😉

Excellent!
I just came across your video- this is such a lucid set of explanations - you explain clearly without dumbing it down. Thank you!
Chris
Many thanks for your videos. They're really informative, and I find many such as this video are applicable to other medium's such as watercolor.
Love the way you simplify . My awareness has been sharpened and the way I look at a landscape improved . Thanks Frances South_Africa..
Learning so much…you’re a great teacher. Thank you.
Happy to hear that!

Your video was the only UA-cam video I've seen on painting that was really helpful. Thank you!!!!!!!

Glad it was helpful!
I have difficulty to get soft edges. What kind of brush do you use to soften things up? Your brushes seem very soft.
A very clear explanation that I'm sure will be useful for my watercolor painting. Thank you!!

do you offer in person classes?
That is awesome!

Hi Chris, I like the Kraft paper sketch books, but can't seem to find any. ?
Thank you.
Now I just someone to teach me how to take eye pleasing reference photos
Can you use this same technique with acrylic paint?
Would have been really interesting if you did a talk on Andrew Tischlers podcast
The picture behind you is not 50 Shades by Nicolas Cage? Ôk. not quite 50., but Is funny. the video is very informative and educational, thank you very much
Chris, any advice on painting the edges of the canvas?
A decor store near me said I need to either frame them or paint the edges so they aren’t white
I paint canvas edges a color that matches the background, fits the overall look or extend the painting to the sides giving it a slight 3D look.
Did anyone ever tell you that you look just like "Chip', the youngest son in the TV series, My Three Sons? Is he related to you?

I have actually had some digital painters go through my course and say they got a lot out of it
Art supplies cost too much its prohibitive you can keep it ,painting is for the rich
