Agreed! String gauges too. I suspect he has his string height pretty low (1.5 to 2mm @ 12th fret) with tighter string tension. This way he gets the piano-like note with just enough fret clank. It’s all about the finger technique too!
Normally, Josh sets his 4-strings up with 55-110 Stainless Steel strings (170 on 5-strings) with somewhat low-ish action. This particular bass was strung with 45-105 Nickel strings. Also low-ish action.
Look at the mans hands! He is a beast! This has less to do with set up and more to do with pure hand strength. I bet he’s using a completely normal height action and just beating the living shit out of the strings to get them to bounce off the fretboard a bit.
This is my favorite bass line to play using fingers, I like to play half of the break at 1:40 in regular time and the other half before the riff comes back in at double time. Then following that lead riff on the bass instead of keeping time with the drums. It gives it such a huge sound, give it a shot!
I would LOVE if the recording of this song had the bass as prominent as it is in this play through. Fantastic tone and you absolutely nailed the whole song. The breakdown especially feels particularly brutal with your meaty tone.
