    I typically think of the wells as radio antenna transmitters which are a little more in-depth than ones just for receiving and for the exact reasons given. A half wave dipole of a specific length is a quantum well for a ground state of a specific λ (and also for the excited energy eigenstates of higher frequency multiples but for now just the ground state). Transmission is the goal and the key is in the geometric dimensions of the antenna (assuming that the radio all works how it should). The wave ψ moves across the tuned potential so that once about half of it reaches the negative side (a standing electric field for the briefest of moments) the phase flips and so to does the potential. Entropy drives the potential via EMF via the B field, thats why the energies are continuous, because B does it's work. It was working to turn E back to zero and at the key moment π the B field flipped and so too the direction of the work from, say, down and towards to up and away. This first half wavelength of the wave packet is the only time when you can have an affect on anything because after that you completely hand over whatever free particles didn't reach the ground and are still in space around the antenna to probability amplitude (the field pattern) and its gone.

      You have to take sines and cosines for the wavefunction between -a and a
      Otherwise you would need to inverse a horrible 4×4 matrix made of exponentials
