We may have just stumbled upon the world’s greatest cheap engine cleaner after disassembling these LS cylinder heads! Does half the price mean half the quality?
I just used oven cleaner on my 2t dirt bike cylinder an power valves an wow.. it ate it away quick! Not sure how bad it is for the material so I hosed it off quickly each time and hit it with air then wd40 when done and I was amazing compared to other ways Iv done it in the past.
If you ever run into a broken off exhaust manifold bolt, or cylinder head bolt, the easiest method I've found is to get two nuts that with fit the bolt, screw one down onto the bolt roughly an inch, then take your second nut and screw it down snug against the first one. You then take two wrenches and while turning the first nut as if you were unscrewing it back off, you turn the second bolt in the opposite direction (tightening it), snugging the two nuts against each other as tight as you can. At that point, all you have to do it use a single wrench on the first nut you screwed on, and simply unscrew the bolt. The second nut when screwed tightly against the first will prevent that first nut from unscrewing, resulting in essentially having added an original bolt head back onto it. Also, it always makes life easier to spray some Wd-40 or other rust penetrator on the bolt first. Anyhow, the two nut system at least keeps the welder tucked away in more cases than not.
It’s all over the internet Oven Cleaner is BAD on aluminum cylinder heads, a cheap gravity fed sandblast gun, baking soda and a cheap good used 10 to 20 gallon air compressor works wonders
Why did you host the heads down with water before you started? It seems to me that you diluted the chemicals before they really had a chance to start working. I think the idea of 2 identical heads was great, but I think you would have had better results spraying the degreaser and oven cleaner on dry heads. Also, heat (and cold) have an effect on cleaning effectiveness.

the best way is to mix them both together better if u have brake cleaner mix it altogether you'll see the shining result...lol

should have used the tip from degreaser on the oven cleaner. Oven cleaner is definitely caustic to aluminum.
Oven cleaner can be corrosive to aluminum. You can ise it but wouldn't leave it on real long.
Don't think there is anything better than gasoline, but the problem is that it hurts the hands

On modern common rail turbo diesels would you advise to spray Hylomar onto gasket as a dressing prior to installation?..
It'll just leave some smut on the aluminum. Aluminum sucks anyway.

Depends. If it's the original full strength (yellow can) it WILL. Not sure about the newer (blue can) formula
