From a true OG. I’m from 140th St Cypress Ave. I’m 55 yrs. Old Curtis is official. I remember when the guardian angels, who started in the Bronx, were riding the NYC subways doing their thing and protecting the public. Glad to know he survived to tell his story. Much respect.

What I remember, being a child in the 70's in NYC is that people, mostly the grandma's, grandpa's, aunts and uncles felt safer walking down the street or riding the subway when they saw the Guardian Angels. I got to meet Curtis around 40 Duecy, near the store where I worked once or twice and just said hello and maybe shot the breeze a little. Back then, you could have a conversation with NY-er's on the street, no big deal.

And the difference now is the people don't support fighting crime. Back then the cops were against them and the people were for it - now it's the opposite.

The whole world is going to shti. The drugs are more powerful, cheaper and addictive. There also more dangerous. This as well as so many people becoming homeless and the inequality getting worse day by day.. I don’t see the world recovering anytime soon. The US has also opened its boarders in order to keep wages down. I wonder what things will look like in 10 years.

The guys taken it upon himself to clean up the city. Did drugs busts with no guns no backup. Just went in and cleaned it up. Who wouldn't vote for the guy? I'd love to hear why? They'll keep voting in incompetent morons who bury the city deeper and deeper in drugs, homelessness, and crime. Sad.

I also heard a bunch of them got jumped in Christie Pitts one night by guys with baseball bats and hockey sticks.. and a few Guardian Angels ended up in the hospital.
Sometimes these guys would get on the TTC subway and walk up and down through all of the subway cars acting like the police.. mean muggin' and and eye-balling people.

Curtis has made NYC a better place to live his entire adult life . I never thought of the Guardian Angels as a vigilante group , I viewed them as a group of young men and women trying to make a difference in the NY crime scene , trying to make NY a safer place to live and visit for all to enjoy . I think he's done some great work and to this day is still out there having the backs of everyday New Yorkers .

I wish Detroit had the Angels. Maybe my city would actually comeback. I'm sorry it's not going to under the control of the elected officials because they are mostly criminal themselves. If NEW YORK can do it then there is absolutely nothing keeping Detroit from being reborn with the help if the Angels. The problem in Detroit is that if you are not of color you are looked at as a person trying to to black property. HANZ FINANCIAL tried to buy vacant land all over the city to plant urban gardens. He was spending millions of his own money to do so. Not to own the land but to take disgusting decay and turn it into something that Detroitors could be proud of. The outcome was once citizens and city hall got it into their racist minds that this white millionaire was only trying g to do this as a monopoly money grab to take land from black owners and buy as much as he could afford so eventually he was the majority. This poor man was lucky to earn his money at a young age and growing up in Detroit hearted to see it beautiful again. Urban gardens were thought of as an idea to help the hunger crisis in the city. Detroit isn't like most other cities. The ghetto isn't like L.A, Chicago, New York or any other major cities. It's hundreds of vacant lots were home once stood. Now it's like the land I'd taken it back.Godbless you Curtis Sliwa 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I've ALWAYS liked this guy. Talk about a dude that leads by example. The first time I ever visited New York was 1977 and it was SCARY AS SHIT. There were streets I begged my dad not to stop at the stop signs on because of all the hoods, hessians, and bums standing around on the corners. I had never seen a rogues gallery like that. And nevermind riding the subway - it was pure fear after dark. So when I saw that earliest news coverage on the Angels and that they were crime patrols without weapons I thought it was the craziest idea ever and that it would never last. That was 45+ years ago and this guy is still walking the walk. In 2006 he started an Angels crew in my current hometown of Calgary, Canada but unfortunately they couldn't grow the ranks and it didn't last. If Curtis was shocked by the open air drug markets and drug use THEN he should see it now 17 years later. It's 20X as bad. I remember Curtis doing a walkabout with local news crews behind city hall and in the span of like a minute taking a crackpipe from a chick and a knife off some skid. It's hard to not like Curtis Sliwa: he's a legend and a great New Yorker. PS: I prefer the gnarly NYC of '77 to the PG Disney resort it is today. Too much of it's character has been neutered.

The "PG" (read: leftist/woke) version of NYC is just as bad today; and that ideology is just as destructive to the city and bad for the people, simply in different ways. The State wants all citizens disarmed, docile and compliant... Meanwhile they literally import illegal alien criminals by the busload daily, take care of them with our taxes, try their damnedest to evade SCOTUS rulings on 2A/CCW, have made self defense de facto illegal, coddle the criminal element with no bail policies and activist DA's who refuse to charge criminals... You name it. The city certainly _looks_ nice and cleaner than the grimy old days of the '70s-'80s-'90s, but actual stats might be a big surprise to anyone who thinks its actually safer. All politicians care about is maintaining the facade; the _appearance_ (illusion) of safety, and anyone who defends themselves or criticizes the insanity of blue/sanctuary cities is vilified as an evil bigot racist phobe etc etc.
I mean can understand the government and police hating vigilantism; it exposes the myth they push that they're the only ones with the power, authority and ability to use force; and that people are incapable or unjustified in defending themselves. The State, after all, exists only to perpetuate itself not for the benefit of the People -- that's politics 101. But for regular people to be against vigilantism just boggles my mind. You can be a victim if you wish. No thanks. As far as I'm concerned Goetz is a hero, and self defense is a basic human right.

I am not going to bring politics in to it but Trump has it also even before he was a TV star. The sitcom Honeymooners is more a documentary of how New Yorkers act and speak. If they got something to say they will say it, and to your face.

Way to go Curtis. Such a real person in a world of fakes. His inspiration, achievements, and the positive impacts of the GA since its founding, without question, had a signifiant positive impact on not just NY, but hundreds of cities across the US and world. I joined he Atlanta GA chapter my senior year of highschool, 1987-1988. Instead of playing sports or getting into trouble on weekends, it was my extracurricular activity that year to patrol the city's metro trains and housing projects in the weekends all throughout the night stopping drug deals and chasing down purse snatchers. There were a few of us from the suburbs, but most were inner city guys that believed in doing right and protecting their community. I loved every minute hanging out, sparring, and stopping crime with my brothers. On the flip side, my parents were worried sick when I was with them. But probably helped prepare them for when I was in front line combat in Iraq with the Army a few years later.

I remember NYC in this era... Harlem was terrible, the Bronx looked like a bombed out war zone, and everyone carried 007 knives (including myself) for protection. Bad times... And yet I'd argue in many ways, a hell of a lot better than our current leftist politicians/society doing just as much to destroy the city; simply by different methods. By the way, _Geotz was a hero._ Period.
I mean I can understand the police and politicians being against vigilantism: They are the State, and the State always wants a monopoly on force; it must justify its existence and justify its own powers necessarily by taking that away from the people, even if it renders them fundamentally unsafe. They need to maintain that mythology of being superior, somehow justified where the People are not, somehow needed as if a person is incapable/unjustified in self defense. It's BS. The State exists to perpetuate itself, not for the betterment or protection of the people. Politics 101. I'll never understand this mentality of average people being against vigilantism though. When seconds count, police are minutes way. Disarming the people and expecting them to roll over and take it when assailed by criminals just boggles my mind, but nowadays (especially in blue cities) it seems someone who protects themselves from being attacked is vilified more than the criminal; and average, upstanding citizens with no records get in more legal trouble for clear-cut defensive weapon use than the criminal with a lengthy record who attacked them.
