Paul DePodesta has been a controversial figure since his arrival in Cleveland back in 2016, and with that, there has been some good and some bad. However, most of the good starts and ends with the hiring of Kevin Stefanski.
Meanwhile, the bad is still being felt following the firing of former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
The main issue that I have with Paul DePodesta is that he is too eager to follow the approach that made him famous with Moneyball.
Football is not baseball, contracts are shorter, careers are shorter, and injuries are more severe. That makes things extremely hard to plan for and it makes it almost impossible to build a roster through long term development.
I believe that DePodesta has done some good, but overall it is time for change and time for a shift back to traditional NFL practices.
The worst thing about being a Browns fan right now is … we just don’t even know who’s making decisions. Berry? Depo? Jimmy?
Anytime you don't know who is making the decision, you actually do know: it's the owner. Strong orgs with clear chains of command have people taking credit. Orgs where the owner makes all the key decisions have a smoke screen and tons of people with different job titles to mask the owner's involvement to avoid blame.
This is Jimmy's show. It has been since he bought it. He's deeply stupid.
Finally! Holding DePo and the Browns accountable; Giving the spotlight where it needs to be shined
This is why you’ve become my new favorite Browns channel and one of my favorite YT channel overall. You are motivating me to re start my podcast itself
Yes, he's without a doubt the best Browns content creator out there 👏🏼
Appreciate that my dude!!
Moneyball was about saving a cheap ass organization money and hoping that the product they put out could win. The NFL has a salary cap and puts every team on an equal, financial footing. DePodesta isn't a good fit in the NFL.
Considering the Browns are the highest spending team in the league the past few seasons, I'm not sure you know what you're talking about lol
The A's for the most part didn't do that well in the playoffs and also, they didn't really care about character or leadership qualities in their players. That's an even bigger mistake to make in football where locker room culture and team cohesion make a huge difference.
Everyone gets moneyball wrong, the book wasn’t an explanation of how the A’s won, it was a biography of how Beane failed as an athlete. Beane didn’t invent anything, he simply committed to something that has evolved from the origins of baseball, also the A’s have had their success because they draft and develop talent well.
@@bricekimball5206 while Billy’s career was definitely part of the story, a large portion of the book is definitely dedicated to sabermetrics and the types of statistical data used to drive some of these decisions. It dives into Bill James and Craig Wright’s research as well
@ True, but the biggest fallacy is in my opinion is how they don’t actually talk about how that team was constructed. Only vaguely talking about the big three, not really mentioning Tejada or Chavez, that team was loaded. Was it Beane furthering Bill James’s ideas or was it just a really good generation of players coming through an organization at the same time? People talk about it as if he was performing a miracle when in fact Beane is a decent gm with really good scouts, in a league where half of the teams are either just either banking the money they earn or in a total rebuild. The A’s under Beane we’re never trying to be better than the Yankees, they were trying to be better than the royals.
You're really only partially right, it all comes from the owner. The owner is 100% to blame for everything, he makes the decisions, he signs the checks, he has the responsibility. And this owner stinks and is clueless on how to run a football team.
Big facts dude only knows gas stations.....and we all saw how he scammed his own customers!!!!! Now he's doing it @ clevebroowns stadium every sunday!!!
Watson's trade has destroyed the Browns. It is everybody's fault.
Watson is a symptom, not the cause.
Lol the browns were already destroyed. How about the past 20 years of quarterbacks? Don't know what happened to Watson, he was great in Houston and everyone was jealous that Cleveland could afford watson at the time despite his court cases.
Excellent analysis Joey. This explains how the wheels fell off the wagon.
Thank you!
Jimmy Haslam and Paul vs John Dorsey draft
Bills fan here, I audibly groaned when the browns hired Dorsey. We saw how he made an elite QB like Josh Allen look pedestrian and knew he would make whoever you guys had at QB look bad. He literally benched James Cook and basically removed a run game that is now one of the better units in the league (especially with Allen) which cost the bills a playoff game as well as a shot at first seed in 2023 with how bad the offense was until the bills canned him. Sure he can beat up on bad defenses (look at the ravens game lmao) but any competent defense exposes him. We love you on the other side of Erie though
your color grading is top tier.
Thank you!!
Well produced and well laid out. I really appreciate you bringing receipts of DePo’s remarks and contrasting them against the results. I have been banging the drum for years about how his moneyball analytics in baseball does not translate, so impressed to see you break that down. It’s the absolute truth. John Dorsey was 100% correct to throw his reports in the trash. DePo convinced Jimmy to hire Stefanski because they would be “aligned”. Aligned in failure! Listen, I appreciate analytics as a tool but you have to have a system and culture to build around and this group cannot do it. They are soft, they run soft camps, they do not recognize their failures until it’s too late. They need some football guts who can find really good football players. They sold out to FA’s and very trades because they know they are not going to identify great talent, so they let that talent develop elsewhere and bring them in on a FA deal. They built the offense around the wide zone blocking scheme and the running of Chubb and Hunt. When Chubb went down they were fucked. Callahan leaving, Chubb injured, counting on Wills at LT and changing the offense was egregiously reckless and is wgat caused this disaster. Who’s fault is it for not fixing the OL and RB positions to slow down the pass rush they have had? Fireable! We all saw it in preseason.
Haslam is the real problem here. Here’s a guy who spent 8 years in the most stable and successful cultures in football, the Steelers and he learned nothing! What an asshole to spend that time as part owner, go plunk down a Bil, and not know what the fuck you are doing! I could have ran this team better. Number 1 lesson, never, ever let your newbie HC also be your OC! It does not work! Same goes for a newbie HC calling the defense. He has done it multiple times! Idiot!
I have just cone to the conclusion Jimmy does not understand the game. He watches it. He loves it. But he has no instincts on how it becomes successful. He did not take notes in Pitt. All he did was count beans and talk shop on a sports media conglomerate. Winning? He’ll leave that ip to the Ivy league nerds who were riding the talent of Sashi Brown and Dorsey picks.
Meanwhile Berry’s understudy is building a playoff team in Minnesota and Dorsey is helping build a dynasty in Detroit. Both guys tossed out for DePo and Berry. Unfuckingbelievable. I’m convinced you and I could run this team better man. It all starts with a better culture. The culture we have now is zero accountability.
The real “Moneyball” players in the NFL was the Seahawks. Pete Carroll and Schneider built a culture and scouting department that created a dynasty out of 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks. Year after year. They still hover around playoffs with a cast off like Geno Smith.
Aside from a handful of players, the Browns are devoid of real talent and a winning culture. That’s a tough situation considering the cap they are chained to.
Not a Browns fan, never heard you before, but just stumbled on this channel, I am a Football snob and I think I know a lot about the spot, but VERY impressed with the way this was explained and common sense information/details provided! Well done! 💪
Much appreciated, thanks so much for the kind words!! Much more to come
About damn time someone has held this Bozo accountable. I’ve been screaming from the mountain top for YEARS. NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL HES OUT OF HERE. He’s Jimmys right hand man. The “devil” in his ear
The entire fround office needs to go. We have to start all over again. Would be nice if the Haslems would sell the team to local interests
The Ivey Cult has to go (Depotestical, Dingleberry, and Preventski).
One minute in and automatic thumbs up just for the headline. I already agree
Question: would you hire a plumber to do electrical work? Of course not, that would be insane. Same goes for why would the Browns hire someone who's entire career is Major League Baseball (Paul DePodesta). He has zero football experience until the Browns hired him. That's INSANE!!!!!
This feels like cope because deep down you know the actual problem is the owner, but he's not going anywhere.
I wouldn’t call that a cope, its definitely true though - if you can’t knock off the king you go after the ones who have his ear
@@optimisticfanclubthen he will.just.hire more YES men
you’re one of my favorite channels rt now for the browns and i would like to see you and Quincy Carrier maybe collab somehow lol get it done!!
Wait, the Browns weren't "ruined" prior to Paul DePodesta being hired??
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE I’ve never met another human that knows this song

@Landennn 😂😂😂
Do all teams have "chief strategy officers"? Yes, dump Paul and see what we can do..
First time watching.. Great content so far man.
Glad you enjoy it!
Your channel is insightful and, most importantly, truthful. You should be on The Browns staff because not only are you wildly intelligent, but you have real heart for the team and the city! Analytics cannot measure work ethic, dedication, motivation, and leadership.
Depodesta needs to go. Great video as usual bro!
The only way we can fix this mess(other than the Haslams selling the team), is if Depo and Berry are fired so they can hopefully bring back John Dorsey. He built the majority of the core of this roster that made the Browns an instant success for Berry and Stefanski in 2020.
I loved Anthony Schwartz at Auburn and was pleasantly surprised that the Browns drafted him. But I knew that the offense we were running at the time didn’t exactly translate to the NFL for most of our pass catchers. I was hopeful he’d develop with the Browns.
Darius Slayton and CJ Uzomah were the exceptions.
Little late to this video. But absolutely loving the use of Talking Heads in this video 👏👏👏
Another great upload my dude.
Great video. You just goat a new patron sub!
thank you so much!!! New video dropping tn on Patreon
As others have said: excellent take from the best browns channel, like usual.
Repping Canadian football and Browns fans well, my guy.
You hit the nail on the head, sir. Good stuff. Good pick on the Talking Heads song!
I disagree with you on KS. He's part of the DePodesta package. He's the type of coach that is good enough to generally keep you out of the bottom of the league, but can never get you to the top. He's Freddie Kitchens all over again. Only he doesn't have an excuse because he has always had playoff talent on his roster. All things considered he has significantly underperformed. He has to go. The Browns were in the best place they could be when John Dorsey was running the program.
At some point you half to wounder if other teams are paying these clowns to F up the Browns.
I think the biggest problem is Berry. He is the President of the team so he is Depodesta's boss.
How do you ruin something that has been a disaster since 1999? Speaking as a season ticket holder. They haven’t been good since the return. A decent year here and there, nothing else.
Baseball is barely a team sport and football requires arguably the most coordinated team effort to win of any sport. That’s why moneyball doesn’t translate
You hit the nail on the head 👍
I live in Canada and been a Browns fan since about 1962. I love the Browns and its just disgusting what the stupid owners over the years have done to this great team!!
Rumor is Berry is the main one that started pushing for Watson that makes sense he’s obsessed with black QBs .
the one obvious thing NO one will talk about
🥱
So u sayin he racist?
Yep....100% agreed. Berry doesn't want a white Quarterback. Racist pos
You're going to need to provide some evidence to back up that claim.
The only problem with your point is the guy you want fired is the one who hired Andrew Barry and Stefanski. They’re like-minded so if we’re getting rid of depo, you need to get rid of everyone.
Oof. This is a swing and a miss brother. Saying DePo “ruined” the Browns? We dont even have a clear understanding of what his influence is lol We do know it wasnt influential enough when it came out he was pushing for Browns to hire McDermott instead of Hue. We do know he wasnt influential enough to stop Dorsey from hiring Kitchens, DePo actually wanted Stefanski that first go round. Then we finally get to hire Stefanski and it works out. This has all been widely reported. Nah brother, this aint it.
Also I recommend actually reading the book Moneyball and not just watching the film where liberties were taken due to it being a movie and all. Great film, but not an accurate representation of who DePo is and his thought process
His influence is significant, the head coaching decisions went to a vote so no, he could not completely get his way - however, he absolutely was a key figure in firing Dorsey and AVP and the latter has absolutely negatively impacted the team - additionally, he 1000% believes (and enjoys) finding underrated talent that hasn’t been fully recognized - that’s my argument here - trying to build a winner through identifying the “hidden gems” is not conducive to success - furthermore, the belief that being a consistent 9-7 or 10-6 isn’t the answer is ridiculous - that mind is what is building the frame work for this teams approach and that is why they’re inconsistent - tell me what part is wrong in what I just said
@ so lemme get this straight. You think that losing Alex Van Pelt, the guy who (checks notes) is “killing it” with the Patriots is what derailed this team? Replaced with the guy who (checks notes) you yourself said was going to be a great hire and mesh with Stefanski. And EVERY team believes in finding underrated players. If they didnt then nobody would have draft picks past round 3 lol thats not a negative point bud. That is how good teams are built. Find cheap, young value to fill out your roster.
Sometimes the most obvious answer is the right one. The acquisition of Deshaun Watson is what set us back. As of now we dont have a clear answer of who is responsible for that, but according to Jay Glazer and PFN the owner with a history of making QB decisions with this organization was the responsible party. If you wanna fire DePo cuz u think he was the reason we got Deshaun, fine. I understand that opinion. But this weird bashing of simple team building philosophy isnt the slam dunk takedown of him you think it is lol
@@optimisticfanclub Name some non 1st or 2nd round picks who Dorsey hit on with the browns.
@Itsalwayscloudyincleveland its very easy to oversimplify what I’m saying when you frame it that way - yes - when you are uninvolved and don’t have a grasp of how important someone is in an organization and you rip them out of a building that can be a serious set back, especially when the offense has as significant of a drop as they have had - also, I admitted I was wrong in the video about ken dorsey, are you not watching the video? And you’re again misrepresenting my point, I’m saying having an over reliance and belief in his process which is built around finding undervalued talent is not reliable because as you just said, every team tries to do that and fails more often than not - in reality, 20% of your roster will be responsible for 80% of the output and our 20% is getting old and injured
@@optimisticfanclub I did watch the whole vid. My point about Dorsey being, what was perceived as a good hiring at the time, even by you, why is the loss of AVP all of a sudden the straw the broke the camel's back? What about Stump, Bill, hell even Petzing? We reshaped our entire offensive staff. I think the idea that AVP was some glue guy is all nice and dandy until you realize we got rid of the entire staff he was supposedly holding together in the first place lol
The ENTIRE LEAGUE relies on finding undervalued talent. Especially now with the massive cap space QB contracts are taking up. That's why 4th and 5th round picks hold even more value now than even 10 years ago.
Also, lemme get this straight, this roster over the past few seasons which nobody would disagree has been one of the most talented in the league the past few seasons, by far the most talented roster the Browns have had in the 21st century, one whose depth was tested and held up last season, this roster is all of a sudden poorly built? The criticism of roster construction just doesn't make sense.
So your entire issue with DePo and why you're calling for him to be fired is because we assume he wanted AVP gone, and because you assume he was the catalyst for the Watson signing? Is that pretty much as deep as that hole goes essentially?
Cant wait for the next video. Hope the newborn is healthy
Will be up in the next 1.5 hour! And thank you very much, he’s a big healthy boy!!
Nailed it 100%. As a diehard Browns fan for years, I echo these sentiments and they are unfortunately all-consuming. Paul D sucks in his position and has been the problem for years. He must go! Haslam: hire a credible football exec/czar/ex-player for the sake of this franchise. Joe Thomas?
He’s the Worst chief strategic Officer ever!!! Signing a guy with 20 lawsuits then he gets injured and plays horrific. His strategy is absolutely horrible.
Paul DePodesta has never won anything in either baseball or football, yet the Browns treat him like a god. Along with Andrew Berry, he has made the franchise a laughingstock.
I’ve always called him and continue to, Decongestant !! It will never turn around, way too many variables. Truly, after JB era, even with a good team with Kosar, three and out AFC championship games. Fricken Model fired Bill Belichec, then the curse came and NEVER really turned around. It hurts Browns fans so much! I started watching in 1956, then JB came to the Browns. I’m from Syracuse area…..so depressing!!!!!!!!
He has helped single handily help ruin the the Browns
I believe it is Jimmy Hallam that has ruined the team. The Browns always seem to make desperate moves over and over again--Johhny Manziel, Coach Jackson, Odell Beckham and many more dumb decisions. Drafting Baker Mayfield felt like a move top get a high profile name and not a smart move. drafting a QB who is 5ft 11 inches and not that athletic is not smart.
Its all Jimmy Haslam's fault, since owning the Browns, his MO has been micro-managing / interfering with the HC, GM. No successful NFL team is structured this way with two non football people involved in day-to-day operations at the top.
I would like to know if last years Ravens second half was that an Alex Van Pelt offensive or dw4 offense. I think it was dw4 actually listening to his coaches bc he was injured and could only run when he really had to.
Football is not 1s and 0s. It's Xs and Os. Look at Dallas and Cleveland and compare them to Detroit. Ownership who think they know football and are overbearing vs a football guy like Dan Campbell. Who knows the game. Kevin knows the game, let him do the thing.
@KregActual Stefanski isn't it.
The biggest change the Lions had was Sheila Hamp taking over ownership and her bringing in Chris Spielman as an advisor. They brought in Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes.
@@justinedse8435 my comment isn't aging well.
Berry and Depodesta have ruined the Browns for years to come. Including Stefanski, those 3 ran Mayfield, Flacco, and Hunt out of town. Get those 3 out of Cleveland ASAP. Make Vrabel HC and bring back John Dorsey.
Put the blame onto the three stooges: Haslam, DePodesta, and Berry.
Blame who ever hired that mixed up man.
2 words Jalen Milroe
A few problems.
1. Depodesta CHOSE Stefanski to be his yes-man.
2. Stefanski was hired before Andrew Berry
These guys are all in lock-step with their “shared vision”.
Yes Stefanski is the least of their problems, but he is nonetheless a problem.
They all need to go. Culture change.
Of course I dont really know who makes the decisions. If you look at the evidence here's what you find. Haslam has owned the team since 2012. Was Depodesta there when Manziel was drafted, when Shannahan quit mid season, when Jackson was hired? Even Depodest would not have the authority to issue a fully gauranteed contract. I hope Haslam will hire someone competent, dont count on it. Browns fan or analyst, "ive got a cut on my left hand, so Ill put a bandage on my right foot, that should cure it". Haslam needs to shut his mouth, stop making stupid decisions or better yet sell the Browns
Preach brother
How does money ball work with an owner who spends money?
DePadesta needs to go.
This is great. Spot on
The Browns are a cursed team. When Cleveland got a new team, the LAST thing they should have named it was the "Browns". I know to someone in Cleveland thinks that the most absurd thing they've ever heard but it's true. The Browns were named after Paul Brown...who was fired. He left, went to Cincinnati and created the Bengals, using the same colors. The only time anyone EVER saw Paul Brown cry was when his team BEAT the Browns. He was personally offended that they kept the name.
That team went on to struggle and eventually left, changing the name and moving to Baltimore where that team is GOOD, having won a few titles. The city of Cleveland has NO claim to that name as the Brown family STILL owns the Bengals. I know, next you'll say it's a "tribute" or something stupid like that but it's pale in loo of how TERRIBLE this team has CONSISTENTLY been.
The team needs a complete BRAND change. They should have named them anything...frankly, I think the Cleveland FIRE sounds better or the Cleveland ROCKERS...anything but the Browns.
Gtfoh, I grew up on the 1980's browns. A cleveland team not named the browns? Get outta here. The city and the people in it, even surrounding cities, people from rival cities all fought so that we could keep the name, colors and records here. Where they belong. All the real browns fans feel the same. I feel sorry for other fans that don't have the same type of connection to their team. We are generations old, it's in our blood, born and raised and that's how we like it. Do not tell us what our team should be.
@@bryan-still-a-poker-player
I'm just telling you the truth, as I stated, I didn't expect you to accept it, so, you will continue to suffer.
I'll agree w the Fire suggestion if you add Dumpster in the middle
All those championship banners and trophies in Paul’s office tell me it’s not Depo’s fault. Wait, he’s never won anything? Jimmmmmmy!
How is KS so good he's the one who let Baker walk he's the one who was the talent of evaluator with Watson
Facts!!!💯💯💯💯
This was fantastic. Great video. Yes, get rid of Depo.
Get rid of Depodesta bring back John Dorsey(if you can). Depo is a baseball disciple of Billy Beane and no football person
Since when did Depodesta become the GM? Didn’t know he could just fire people lol
People love to complain about analytics and unfortunately Depodesta is the most well known proponent of analytics. To think he is the sole decision maker in all of the Browns poor decisions is laughable.
Ya, it was pretty shocking when Albert Breer reported that, and it's not that he is the sole decision maker, it's far from that, it's that he has the ear of Jimmy Haslam and has a lot of influence, especially because out of anyone in the regime, he has been there the longest
Plenty of blame to go around. Cant be all on the back of DePo. Stefanski is the least to blame; he has played the role of the good soldier.
Its crazy the tip toe around Stefanski defenders do. Think of any perennial contending coaching staff. They constantly lose coaches to other jobs. They still contend because the HEAD COACH should be the glue! He should not need to defer to lead his team! Really think about it, if Harbough or Tomlin had this same roster would we be 2-7?? And before you think it, they would never let ownership force them into playing a player
We gonna pretend like 2023 didn't just happen? We gonna pretend like we didn't just see an offense go over 450 yards 2 of the past 3 games with a new QB? We gonna keep pretending that Deshaun Watson wasn't the single biggest problem with this team? We've seen them succeed with this coaching staff. These players. This front office. We HAVENT seen them win with Deshaun at QB. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's not a chicken.
. Adam the Bull blames Stefanski. Where is the logic in that. Give up 6 high draft choices. Pay DW so much that you cannot get FREE AGENT quality players. Give up on decent QB-so whats the answer to that situation--FIRE the COACH, wow what a gifted analyst. You could get God to coach the team next year ands not much will change.
Just last year this team was viewed as a Super Bowl contender. But the Watson gamble blew up and Chubb was injured.
In reality the Browns made one bug mistake in Watson, a gamble that Atlanta , Miami, and others were willing to take.
Now fans want to fire everyone, blow up the team, and start yet again.
Yes the team has holes, but it's also loaded with talented players.
Retool, certainly.
Clean house, hell no!
Definitely don’t clean house
The browns were ok for a few years but now back to crap for a decade
This is why everyone blame Depo is totally bias. When they told him to fire Jim woods that’s no issue but firing Avp is? How
Apparently a terrible chief strategist. Or Haslam isn’t listening. Failure needs change. #browns #haslam #depodesta

Mr. Money ball! You're fired!
Always talking around Kevin Stafanski any other team in the nfl would have fire there head coach. Prime Example Bill Belichick. Only in Cleveland fans dance around the head Coach.
The Browns had a easy record to play against (except against Houston) their last 6 games. It's not hard to figure out why the team was successful. Ya'll played SORRY teams. Go look at your 2023 schedule.
I agree, however, to be fair they were already ruined…
it was the Watson gamble that put the Browns into this position. If anyone person in particular...... Watson
Watson didn't sign himself to that contract come on dude shit rolls downhill
Wait, does DePodesta have this much power? Quincy Carrier Always says he is only in charge of hiring and firing front office people and nothing else. I didn't know he had this much power.
Well he fired Alex Van Pelt, or at least lobbied to other people to do so which undermines Kevin Stefanski - a coach historically sets his staff up himself, so it’s a massive overreach. A lot of what I’m saying is me inferring, but that bit is 100% true
@@optimisticfanclubHaslam wanted more offense. Well know he made comments after the Cardinals game last year, even though we won that he wanted to see more offense. I really don't think it's Depo. You talk about Depo like he doesn't know the differences between baseball and football and how players progress. He's not a dummy and I think we make way too much out of what his motives and power are with this team. I think you have a bad owner that doesn't know how to keep his head out of the boardroom.
That said I'm a big Stefanski fan. We need continuity at that position and I think he is a great leader. With his quarterback that he gets to pick were a contender at some point in the next 3 years.

What a moronic reference to the 2017 Astros. They only won because they cheated. That alone invalidated everything he says.
You’re right, the line up they built wasn’t full of future hall of famers
I wish it was as simple as Joey R maintains. Yet, Browns and 13 other teams pursued DW. 14 of the 32 nfl teams made same mistaken analysis
