I’ve gone the opposite direction and moved from a 2018 MacBook Pro to a Mac Studio Max since I no longer need portability.
I went for the Max 32 core gpu with 1TB HDD (I have a 10GbE NAS with 60TB for bulk storage and archiving) and am so pleased with the performance. It simply destroys the old i7 MacBook Pro and I know you will be very pleased with yours.
The only negative is having to wait until mid June for the Studio Display :(
Edit: I setup mine from scratch. I wanted to take the opportunity to start afresh and whilst it took more time I think it was worthwhile.

hi Norman - and a huge thanks for the sub. Can't tell you what that means. Thank you. Back to the Mac....yeah, I think as it is a new start, I am tempted to set it up from scratch too. The wait is annoying. It sounds as if we chose pretty much the same config. I have been thinking of setting up a NAS. Is it a simple set-up?

@@DavidLewisTech I have a QNAP TVS-672XT NAS but there are lots of options from many vendors and they are usually very easy to setup. You just need to decide what you want to use it for (working directly on or just bulk storage) and spec accordingly.
I wanted the ability to edit FCP directly on the NAS and spec'd mine with 6x10TB HDD and 10G Ethernet which gives me 750MB/s WRITE, 1020MB/sec READ (according to Blackmagic Disk Speed Test) which is more than fast enough for any video editing I throw at it.
Seeing as you use two offices, you might also find it useful to have a NAS at each location and have them automatically sync so you have your data at both sites.

@@norman-king yup - thanks for the info Norman - I think after I have the Mac set-up, that will be the next thing that I will look in to.

I am also a graphic designer currently on a late 2015 27in 5k iMac with 32gb of ram and a 3TB Fusion Drive. I use the same software you do plus Lightroom. It’s been showing it’s age for about a year now and was going to upgrade when Apple would release the 27inch version of their current thin iMac. I have always worked on and much prefer desktop machines. I ended up ordering the Mac Studio Max with 64gb of ram and a 4TB SSD and the Studio Display. I did consider going with the Ultra for even more future proofing but thought I should save some money and incase I need to update my mostly USB A peripherals. The Ultra really is too much machine for what I do. I love my current iMac and kind of sad and a waste of perfectly usable screen. I mentioned in another person’s video Apple need to bring back the Target Display Mode. I understand they need to sell products but with all their Environment Friendly talk it doesn’t made sense to not have to option to use a perfectly good display. When setting up a new Mac I always start fresh.

hi there Omar - sounds like we have very similar demands from our Macs doesn't it. I have noticed a serious slow down recently with the CC apps on my Intel Mac. I can't wait for the new one to arrive. Like you said, the Ultra is too much, even for the likes of you and I. I think I will set this one up as a new Mac. A fresh new start all around. The first thing to go on will be the CC suite though!

Definitely a slow down even launching InDesign, Illustrator etc. is slower. You are the first video to even mention InDesign. I am terrible when it comes to updating (not broke why fix) I am running the same operating system and apps from a year ago. I did a clean up of caches etc recently and that didn’t improve. It will be interesting to see if I can scroll through InDesign pages in full res vector and images mode!

Hello again David, i really think you made the right decision as you explain your needs very well. When having to work on different locations a laptop is a must there’s no doubt about that. But for me like i said before i am really not a laptop guy, i find it painful to work on small screens (needing reading glasses and such) and i realize i have been spoiled over the years using my 27’’ iMac. I do mostly photography work but plan on starting a lot of video work in a very near future, so the Mac Studio combo was the better solution for me for the moment. But this being said i also realize there will come a day when my video work will certainly entail some level of travelling and then, but only then will i consider getting a Macbook pro. But this might take a few years until i reach such a level of creative needs.
Again thank’s for sharing your thoughts, be well and god bless.

great to hear from you again....promise, as soon as the MBP arrives, you'll be using it! Yeah, I am not used to small screens either, but everyone says it is a LUSH screen, so we shall see! If you could help me by sharing the vid.....that would be soooo cool. Thanks again Raymond 🙏🏻

@@DavidLewisTech I cannot share anyone’s content right now as I want to make it fair for everyone if that makes sense. If I shared your channel, I would have to share the other 80 channels I follow. I will be here supporting every video and I will tell my friends to check you out😁

Good video David. I went through the exact same thought process.Though I’m coming from PCs. I geeked out for several weeks on Mac Studio videos; as I have only really worked on desktops before. But, I kept coming back to the fact that the M1 Max seemed fine for my workflows. I haven’t seen any videos, other then many stream 8k footage ones, that even tax it. So, I suspect it will be like butter to use. Though, I have seen quite a few Premier Pro videos where the ram has maxed out around 48gb; and an art is right video that showed around the same max ram usage for Photoshop. So I ended up getting the M1 Max MacBook Pro 16inch (better thermals, quieter and a bigger screen), with 64GB ram. Might be worth bumping the ram up from 32gb I think? For £400, that strikes me as a wise move. Plus, that way I also figure I can allocate 16gb ram to a Parallels setup, and still have 48gb for the Mac. Not sure I’d be comfortable doing that if I only had 32gb.Storage wise I ended up maxing it out to 8tb. I don’t really want to use dongles. So will just cloud backup it I think. 2TB would probably be just fine. I would consider 4tb anyway though,, as the speed of the drive is faster then the 2tb. (I started with 4tb and then cancelled it to get the 8tb!). Noticeable in real world? Honestly, don’t know. But I plan on having this 5 years at least (probably much longer - my last PC build was 2009!), because the cost is very steep. I really don’t think that in a years time I’ll be beating myself up for paying the extra for the storage. I literally researched it for weeks before pulling the trigger. Mine comes mid may. Exciting times David!

Hi there - really great to hear from you. So, you are coming from a PC, and myself from a six year old Intel iMac. It has been quite a tough decision to move away from desktops, but I think I am happy with the choice. I did consider 64GB of memory, but from folks I talk to, I think (and hope!) 32GB will see me through. Like you say, exciting times. I am counting down the days until it arrives. I am like a kid waiting for Christmas morning!. Thanks so much for taking the time to get involved. D 🙏🏻

@@DavidLewisTech I’m sure you will be fine with 32GB ram David. It has been interesting comparing everything. It seems that there are a few scenarios that take advantage of the extra fully eg Lightroom, particularly importing. But, for 99% of the time, I don’t think it will make much difference. Even my 3 year old IPad Pro feels incredibly snappy in normal use (the 2018 model); and that isn’t even an M1. I think all the Mac Studio models, and the last lot of MacBook Pro’s will handle virtually all workflows, with the exceptions of heavy data processing, pro architecture software, or 24/7 3D modelling for many years to come without batting an eyelid. Totally get your Christmas analogy! Roll on Christmas Day! Be interested to watch your take on it when you have tested it out for week or two.
