    Have you put it on dyno? Theres so many "tuners" with plug and play maps, but without dyno, how do you know they done anything?

  • @bikescarsfoodcollett6340
    @bikescarsfoodcollett6340 3 роки тому +10

    Let’s, first of all, dispel some myths about dyno tuning, when it comes to a production car with a standard ECU (Engine Control Unit) there is no such thing as live tuning, a live remap, or even dyno tuning whilst the vehicle is running. Adjusting the vehicle’s software whilst on a rolling road (chassis dyno) is physically impossible (with the rare exception of specialised piggyback ECUs or emulators) and can only be carried out when the vehicle is stationary with the engine not running, however, I often see misleading marketing that suggests otherwise.
    A chassis dyno (rolling road), is simply a device used for measuring the power output (specifically force, torque or horsepower) from an engine, it’s essential when developing a true custom tune for a vehicle and can take several days to do so, during this time they would also be data logging air-fuel ratios, engine knock, boost, exhaust gas temperatures and so on..
    BUT this is very specialist work and very few companies actually do custom tunes regardless of if they have a dyno or not. More often than not they offer a remap with before and after dyno runs (referred to as pulls), and are agents to the very same trusted companies that provide a file writing service to companies like ourselves, simply because most of us could not afford or wish to pay the labour to have our vehicle truly custom-tuned, plus it’d be foolish to do so, as the benefits would be minimal if no hardware changes had been made.
    Actually, there is an awful lot of hypocrisy within the industry, but you have to remember that these companies are playing to their strengths to win sales, after all, they are first and foremost in business to make money. These very same companies who in one video advocate only having your vehicle tuned on a dyno, then offer mobile tuning and have another arm to their business selling files to users slaved to them, doing exactly the opposite of what they preach, it’s hypocrisy at its finest to generate income from both sides of the coin.
    Certainly, for Stage 1 Tuning (a tune that doesn’t require any physical hardware modifications) 99% of end-users will be delighted with the results from having their vehicle tuned without the hassle of a dyno run, with a BIG caveat, this being that the company employed to undertake the file writing on behalf of the person doing the ECU programming are not some obscure company providing budget low-end files, or even as seen recently, people buying files off eBay, or worse, having a go at the roadside themselves!
    So provided the company carrying out the ECU programming have access to file writers from reputable big brand companies such as Quantum Tuning, Revo, Celtic, and so on, where they have had the opportunity to take the time to develop a tune that safely falls within the tolerances of the engine and components, and has a large dealer network providing feedback to aid continuous improvement you won’t go far wrong.
    This is a really good and important point, let’s use Quantum Tuning as an example, simply because they are the largest tuning company in the UK. Their dealer network provides feedback from approximately 1,000 users of their file writing services, who in turn tune over 50,000 vehicles per year, through the feedback of these dealers it allows for continual improvement and development of their tuning, dealers reporting back on long term issues such as premature wear, for example, so tunes can be modified, as some times “more is less”, this is not something an independent can do, I know which I would prefer if it came to a little additional power or a tune that is safe, widely tested and proven!
    However, some people do like to have the piece of paper either to compare results with their friends or convince themselves about the new power output of their engine, I love all that stuff too, but a piece of paper does come at a cost, and if you read on you may question if it’s worth it.

    Not sure I would be considering those awful £55 rims for a Wildtrak. Fuel do a great line in rims for the Ranger, including Fuel Vector & Fuel Vapor for around £200 each. An offset of +7 or +1 look good and nicely fill out standard 35mm wheel arch flares. I saved money by dropping from the standard 18 inch rims on my Wildtrak to 17 inch rims which is the same size as fitted to the Raptor and every other Ranger. I then increased the profile of the tyre from 60s to 65s which left the vehicle standing at almost exactly the same height but is much cheaper than sticking on an 18 inch wheel & tyre package.
