Didn’t even consider removing “micro-burrs”. Makes sense. Thank you!
Don't ya know, the best load for your gun is take the ball your gonna use, take your powder horn, and drop the powder on your ball in your cupped hand and when it covers up your ball, that's how much powder you use. Just measure it out and Bobs your uncle.😊
Sarcasm is such a lost art. In all honesty that was actually the advice I got from an old timer that hung out at a gun store I frequented in my youth. I mentioned I was looking for some musket caps and round balls and low and behold he is the world's greatest black powder shooter to walk the earth, Davey Crockett didn't have nothing on him, according to him.
I have a .36 flintlock I made with a Dixie barrel. I used a .34 ball with thick patch, and got very good accuracy.
Bob, the way to do it is...cone, crown, and polish the bore...every time! Fred
Great video. I have used valve grinding grease. I just use a cleaning patch with a jag. After I use one grit I completely wash the barrel. I lastly use a polishing grit. Increase accuracy, and can load more in a row. In the 80s I had a beautiful 32 cal flintlock. I did not know about polishing a barrel or different size patches. I sold the gun because it was murder loading a 2nd or 3rd shot. Videos like this help people not get frustrated and leave the hobby
Thanks for the kind words! Sounds like you’ve got it figured! 👍🏻
Thanks Bob, excited to see part 2. Keep em coming.
Mike
OldSchool Jack Thanks!
Bob, the first thing I do with a new rifle is cone it! I can’t believe our anc
I have in past, to polish a .50 cal barrel, taken a 1/2 inch Dremel tool polishing wheel, melted the polishing rouge onto the polishing wheel, taken a 3/8 dowel and screwed the polishing wheel onto the end and proceeded to lap the bore for around 1500 passes. I have also used fine grit valve grinding compound in the lube on the patches. As for coned barrel mods, look into the false muzzles used on the target barrels of the 1850's and 1860's. It is basically a cut off extension of your barrel that has clocking tabs sticking out on one ends to go into holes drilled either into your muzzle or fitted to go over the muzzle with a shroud. It has the same bore diameter at its base and even the rifling also but is flared out to allow easier loading without having to modify the muzzle because of all the aspects of you barrel, the single most important part is the final 3 to 5 inches and the crown. I have shot in competitions with original barrels that were heavily pitted near the breech but the crown and final few inches of the bore were clean and crisp and they shit great, actually won a national medal with my original 1864 stamped Richmond Naval Rifle in the N-SSA matches in Winchester.
What a great series and great info, thanks for taking the time to make these! I have an old Dixie Gun Works .32 that needed this type of tune up and it worked great, brought an old gun back to life and made it a real pleasure to shoot and more accurate than I remember!
I just found your channel. You earned a subscription in the first couple videos I watched.
I used to do this kind of thing years ago. You remind me of the face to face mentors I had back then. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
Thank you for sharing that knowledge so freely...
Thank you very much for the kind words Eric. I appreciate it. Good to have you. 👍🏻
Just found your channel and subscribed. I used to shoot black powder. I stopped after watching a guy at the range push the ball and patch with his chin. I packed up and left, never shooting again. After nearly twenty years I'm ready to do it again.
I still have my Lyman Deer stalker but want to build my own rifle. Shape my own stock and move from there.
I'll be watching you videos for the next few weeks learning your little tweeks to make the rifle accurate.
I'm looking forward to start shooting again.
Thanks Bob! I appreciate it! Welcome back!
Bob - Excellent new channel! I'm really looking forward to your results. I have one of those coning tools but I've been too chicken to use it.
Snap 4590 Thanks! Hopefully this series will let you know if you even should or not. Keep watching!
Good job !! However you plum tired me out, so I'll get a nap and catch up with ya' later !!
Really like those sun shades 👍🏼
I'm a pouch/woods type shooter too. I've been interested in a coned barrel because I don't use a shorter starter anyway. Thank you for those tips. I cannot wait to see how the coning and the shooting experiments works out. I'll be watching for it...COUNT on it! Excellent channel...keep up the awesome work!
Black Powder Maniac Shooter Thanks Mark!
First video Clip ever seen from your channel, convinced and subscribed. Keep on doing your great work to let people see how lived history looks like. Regards from oversea, Germany ;)
Thanks so much Tim! I appreciate it! Welcome!
Looking forward to the beginning of what I hope starts "LOADS" of shooting videos. Excited to see your shooting videos. Excited to see the results for the Kibler SMR.
Great video and awesome channel. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I absolutely love the sun shades. I am thinking about putting some on my Lyman Great Plains.
James Sparhawk Thanks! I really like the shades, especially for squirrel guns because I’m likely to be hunting with the sun high and aiming at random directions in relation to the sun. I like silver front sights and they throw an awful glare off the sides without shades.
awesome video. starting my Kibler .36cal SMR kit build next week. this series is going to be super helpful after I get the rifle together. thanks!
Thanks Sam! Enjoy the build, the SMR is a beautiful rifle!
I’m so excited for these videos! Can’t wait to see if there is an accuracy difference in the coned vs not coned barrel.
D5quared91 Thanks! I’m working hard to get to that series. If you look at this video closely you’ll see the incision on my right palm from last weeks Carpal Tunnel surgery. I have the left hand done in the 14th of February and have a long rifle show to video on the weekend before. Hopefully I’ll get at least one Coning video done before that! Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it a lot!
I can't wait. I have a kibler SMR kit in 32 caliber. Just have to put it together.
Michael Sullivan I almost got the .32. That ought to be a great shooter! Thanks!
Awesome information Bob, thanks for sharing.
Thank you JJ!
Another great video, I look forward to seeing your channel grow. Just did some squirrel hunting today myself, but I use a shot load in my TVM fowler.
Kyle Sondergaard I appreciate it! Any day squirrel hunting is a good day! Thanks!
👍 = es gibt nichts mehr zu sagen! Alles perfekt!
Wonderful videos. I cannot thank you enough!!!
Thanks FB!
Ok, joined NMLRA, seemed to make sense! Great video, thanks
Awesome!
I absolutely love that rifle , very nice!
Thanks! She turned out beautiful!
I need to go to friendship Indiana. Never been! I think I’m only like 40 minute drive from there too! Great video!
Freedom Loves Guns It’s the best time. Make it in the spring and look up the bearded guy with the camera rig. I’ll be hard to miss!
I like this 36 cal! Good job Bob ! What is the overlingth? David Back.
The great granddaddy of the classic .22 LR!
TurtleWolf Pack Exactly!
I hit the like button before o watched the vid. Does that count?
When you 1st put this video out I ordered a Kimber 36 cal just like yours been building it through the last few weeks wondering if you found a chronicle bullet to shoot yet mine is a 1 and 48 twist
Allways considered the .36 a bit large for squirrels . The .31 seems more small game to me although those are harder to find .
Excellent video!
Thanks US!
Look forward to the next video. Been thinking about coning my squirrel rifle. I hunt with a .32 Thanks
Hopefully I can persuade you that you should do it, or dissuade you from doing it. So many strong opinions on the forum one way or the other, that I had to do a controlled test myself.
Coning doesn't hurt a thing. I've had too many rifles over the years to be told otherwise.
Why diD you not de burr the rifling before putting in the breach plug?
That is the question isn’t it? 😉
I want that gun.
Cleaning patch with Colgate tooth paste
Yeah u don’t want to take any of the choke out of the muzzle / that’s where u get ur accuracy - thus ur best bench barrels have a false muzzle to protect against damaging or wearing due to starting of patch and ball / back when I was doing this we used Teflon coated ticking - allowed u to beat ball thru false muzzle to egg shape ball - much better accuracy than round ball - lotsa tricks to increase accuracy 😜
I am planning to buy a Kibler in 36 caliber for shooting a the range, plinking and rabbit hunting or would you go with the Kibler 32 cal?
I love a .32 very very much. That said, the .32 is heavier than the .36 and a bit more fumbley to mess with the tiny round balls. If you’re fine with the added weight and aren’t all thumbs you’ll really love a .32.
I wouldn't install a new bbl in the case of accuracy problems. I'd cut that one and and recrown as would have been done BITD. Also, because there is no such thing as a "long starter", or even a "medium starter", I only use a starter-sometimes called a "ball-starter". Bit cool and damp 'round here for bench work. I got wood to cut.
To cut out the full cone I'd have to cut so far back I'd be redoing the front pipe, sight, and cap. My labor would come to darn near the price of a new barrel. That would be a hard call. I always thought a 'short starter' was called a short starter, not because it was short, but because it started the ball short. I could be wrong. Probably am. ‘Ball Starter’, eh? Sounds pretty radical. 😉 Thanks for the comment Wade! See you on the forum!
@@BlackPowderTV it's all about how much bbl you cut off as to what redecorating has to be done. Of course it was done plenty BITD. Also I was thinking of prepping a new bbl install--not a Kibler-prepped kit bbl. that is a big different. I withdraw my other comment (for a kit type gun).
I hear you on the "why", but I also won't call a water heater a "hot" water heater. Linguistic efficiency of the Southern Land I say. Keep up the good work.
Which is better 32 or 36 cal for squirrels
Outstanding! Can't wait to see the results of the tests. Going to wait to see the results of your coning before doing it on my Kibler! Just curious what does Jim think of coning the barrels?
Mike McGuire Hey Mike, I’m not sure what Jim thinks. I will call Katherine and ask her! Afterwards, let me know what you think and ill get it in the mail to you if you want to use it.
Question. How or what are those sight shades made from?
Made from sheet copper bent around a wood dowel. 👍🏻
@@BlackPowderTV, the simple things that elude my mind. Thank you.
next time, polish the bore and cone the muzzle BEFORE you build, I used to'try' to keep 2 barrels in .45, .50 & .54 prepped breeched and filled with bear grease up in the attic of my shop. and 1 each of .32 and .40
Rob Aldridge I purposely left that off so I could test before and after to get on film whether coning degrades accuracy for this gun. Hope that helps. Thanks!
good video Bob! where is part 2?
OLSKOOL Hey, I had a setback on my Carpal Tunnel surgery. Busted an incision and had to re-recover. I should have it done this weekend. It’s been a nightmare, but I’m about healed up. Coming soon!
@@BlackPowderTV sorry to here that Bob, I hope you recover soon! God is able and available! can't wait to see the shooting part.
mike
OLSKOOL Thank you and yes He is!
I only have a second hand .50 cal rifle. If I ever had the means to acquire a second muzzleloader, do you think a smoothbore would be best for me to hunt small game, rather than this type of rifle?
It's totally a preference. Lots of guys like the ease of a smoothbore for small game. Some like the challenge of a small caliber rifle. Totally up to you.
would JB Compound on a patch work as well?
Possibly with enough passes. I shortened the number of strokes i took in the video but I took about 50 total. I've found the really tight combo of jag and scotchbrite works pretty fast. If you put as many patches on as you could force down, i suppose you could get the same effect with a compound.
What maple grade is used in this Kiblers kit?
What is the twist rate of your squirrel rifle bud? I'm looking into getting me one but all the production small bores are 1:48 twist which I will not buy. I guess I am gonna have to get a kit from Track of The Wolf. Oh, my parents bought me an Uberti 1858 New Model Army and I absolutely love it. I have gotten pretty good with it and making my paper cartridges. Are the small bore rifles with 1:48 twist good?
It's a Rice 1/48. 1/48 is good IMO up to 40 cal. 45 cal should be 1/66. Love the NMA!
How high is your ceiling?
9'. That 46" barrel and a wiper long enough to get to the breech adds up to 9'1"...
Where is a place to find a .36 flintlock like that or similar. Cant find one anywhere i tried finding one like in your other video with no regard
This gun is made from the SMR kit from kiblerslongrifles.com. The Soddy .36 shown in some of my videos is a full handmade custom gun.👍🏻
@@BlackPowderTV that soddy is a sweet little apple. How is the accuracy on the kiblers? I did manage to find a kit gun web site called jedediah starr trading. Do you have any knowledge of the kit guns from there
Thanks, she's my favorite flintlock I've ever owned. The perfect gun. The older Kiblers with the Rice barrels were great. I'm sure the new ones with the GM/Kibler barrels are even batter. I know of JST but nothing about their kits. Jim Chambers has the best of that type kit from a historically accurate/quality of parts perspective. His site is flintlocks.com. A bit on the expensive side but excellent parts throughout and accurately put together.
@@BlackPowderTV i might try one of those JST kits. If i do i will let you know and send it down to you to test and run through its paces.
@@hickabillyoutdoors7254 I’d love to hear how it goes for sure. Keep me posted. 👍🏻
Where I’m primarily a hunter, I use Maxi balls for these type of muzzleloaders. I mean my TC Hawkens. I have one in 45 and one in 50. They really like Maxi balls. 39 Years ago, I built a CVA Kentucky rifle in 45 caliber and I shot my first antelope with it actually using a patched round ball. I must have been broke because I sold the gun or traded it for something. I still kick myself.
Hey Ralph, Im mostly a hunter as well. I usually use whatever is correct for the period of the rifle. Unless it's a competition gun. Mostly that means balls but i do use Minies where appropriate. My 1842 Harper's Ferry gets Minies. Haven't tried Maxies lately though i hear folks get great results with them. Yea, theres a few guns id love to have back....i rarely understand what my younger self was thinking...
@@BlackPowderTV that's great. Oh boy, I know what you mean by younger day thinking. Kick myself regularly for being a pendejo.
