I think if you listen to any of the songs on her In the Mood album, you'll feel like it's more her, and she incorporates her voice more nicely. they're mainly r&b so I feel like her voice shines more.

I enjoy Watercolor but I agree with you - Wheein's voice and style are made for r&b and much of her solo stuff has suffered from overly pop production and songwriting. I think you might like her earlier ballads Anymore and Goodbye and her collab with r&b legend G Soul on Butterfly, which is a b-side on the Redd album that includes Watercolor. Wheein received an award a few years ago honoring her as one of the best OST singers in Korea and her OST songs With My Tears and Shine on You are masterpieces of the genre. Her cover of Kehlani's Honey is also terrific. Kehlani gave her version an enthusiastic thumbs up and said she hoped they could collaborate one day. To explain the meaning of the peacock I think we need to go back to an early dance scene where one of the dancers is wearing a sign on her chest reading Anime Titties. Imo Wheein is contrasting the degrading use of one's imagination to create the distorted and objectifying fantasies of women's bodies seen in some anime with the animated section towards the end showing her diving into the deep blue water of her imagination and encountering the beautiful full-spectrum colors of the peacock. Btw, Mamamoo did a solo song switch segment during their world tour where Solar performed Watercolor and Wheein did Solar's Honey while wearing each other's clothing (Solar in the blue outfit and Wheein in Honey's yellow one). It was funny to watch behind the scenes footage where main singer Solar complained that Watercolor was difficult to sing and main dancer Wheein complained that Honey's choreo was difficult to dance. 😂

Watercolor is close to Janet Jackson's general vibe in Alright era and I fear that the recipe is too old for a lot of people. I love Watercolor but Wheein is also my favorite idol singer so I'm inclined to like her songs. 😂 Wheein did special clips for every song on REDD and it's worth watching them because at that time Wheein was exploring her range, not really doing anything that was precisely in her bag. The songs from WHEE and In The Mood are more on the nose for showing the potential of her voice. I do wanna say that none of the members really stick to any of their trademarks within the group when it comes to solos. Mid-tempo is less of a stretch for Wheein and allows her to incorporate more sophisticated choreography. It's not easy to see in group songs but Wheein loves dancing and is effectively Mamamoo's main dancer. I went to her concert over the summer and sis was a total dancing queen, performing for 2.5 hours easily. 🥰 During Mamamoo's world tour the members did a solo song medley...except they exchanged songs! Solar sang Watercolor, Wheein sang Honey, Hwasa sang Eclipse, and Moonbyul sang Twit and then all 4 did a group medley of 4 more songs. Wheein's Honey is my favorite but Hwasa's Eclipse is a close second.
