Zizek when interviewers try to play smart with him: eck, pure ideology Zizek when interviewers understand that he's definitely smarter than them: *explains his opinions in a very clearly and concise fashion, using mostly lay speak
I don't know what anyone's talking about. It's a wonderful interview. The host isn't really familiar with the stuff Zizek is about, but its still a productive discussion
Let's go easy on the interviewer. This is actually a fantastic moment between philosopher and a well-meaning interviewer, who is pretty receptive. There is, I think, a genuine connection between the two and thank god the interviewer doesn't go on some rant denouncing Zizek for his beliefs. If there is any hope for meaningful change in this world, we must have this kind of genuine connection between gifted thinkers and everyone else.
"I'm beggining to like this book all the more!" *looks at camera nervously wondering if the viewer noticed the contradiction of him previously saying he had read the book*
Yes, the host seems really ignorant and misses the point constantly. It's admirable how Slavoj never puts him down or treats him badly. He just tries to explain his views and even gets to use really mundane examples to ilustrate them to his interviewer
I absolutely admire the passionate, upbeat enthusiasm Americans seem to portray, I think its great. But this Nolan guy, hes a slight step to far and makes me quite glad I live in the negative and bitter UK, where humour is the best answer for everything. God bless America and God bless Zizeck
Hey! Lighten up on the host! He did his job: When he wasn't prompting Zizek to hold forth, he pretty well stayed out of the way and let his guest talk. He could've been a _lot_ worse....
you're right of course, though I think if this interview were my first exposure to Zizek my reaction would be more one of bewilderment than understanding
It was awfully brave of him to conduct an interview on a topic of which he seems to've had no prior knowledge, and I'm sure Barry Nolan is good at what he does. But due to the extent to which the format is horribly ill-suited to explaining Zizek's ideas, this video is funny to me.
ok. but what does the beard tell us? it is not what it says overtly but rather its hidden message. The beard on the face is not a vagina but rather the absence of a vagina.
I agree with the comment below, the interviewer is not so stupid as everybody thinks. He understands Zizek's humour, explain things so it's understandable for the viewers, they seem to enjoy each other's company.
That's the most Zizek federally allowed on American Television. His interview with Charlie Rose is probably the reason the Koch brothers bought up a good portion of PBS.
I've never been to the US or had a conversation with an USAmerican, but somehow I got that feeling everything he explains is the exact opposite of the american education and their weltanschauung (*I love that german word in the english dictonairy)
@Grayto: he probably seemed "perfectly fine" with the interviewer because he realized, like most of the commenters about this video, that Nolan is clearly a complete fool and that there's really no getting through to him.
@yiannisz I am not a philosopher but I found this to be encouraging, there is now value in having a good thought and keeping it to yourself or a group of your peers whom you think might be 'smart' enough to understand it. That is intellectual snobbery at it's worst and is what happens pseudo-intellectuals want to sound deep. I found myself changing my opinion about Zizak, I might even take the trouble to read a bit more of his philosophy, so i say good for the host and his boss!
I find it funny that so many have made negative remarks on Nolan. He is a member of mensa, they solve problems. Zizek is a philosopher, he asks questions. This clearly show us the two different sides of the Intelligence/intellectual spectrum. Those who dislike Zizek sees him the same way we who appreciate Zizek sees Nolan. Oh, by the way, Zizek wants us to think and not (necessarily) to 'understand' him.
@OuTofJoY Member of MENSA? Very interesting. I was getting the same vibe as other people commenting on his poor interviewing, but you are right about that fact.
@acdcrocks4ever21 I understand him completely, not one word missed, I'm from South America. I also speak french and german, dont know if that's helped me.
@TheEruditepolymath I don't see anything here that makes me think "genius." You must be referring to something he's written, which I'm not familiar with,
I don't know if it helps but in another video he mentions the contradiction in 'tolerance.' It secretly shows you both think there is something wrong with whoever you must tolerate. For example not many people would say "you must tolerate women" or "you must tolerate blacks."
"but again I prefer it the wrong way" "society of consumption. We say 'ooh, we're just consuming today and so on'" "and no values, no constraints, and so on" "so-called Colin Powell doctrine which" yeah, understanding exactly what Zizek is saying definitely takes a little bit of practice :)
he had plenty of time to learn to pronounce these words. I think american media types make a point of mispronouncing names of foreign things when they want to devalue them. "look as how juvenile this thing is, I didnt even bother to learn how to pronounce it.."
I think there was very little time and this affected the interview a lot, the interrrupting is a bit annoying. Its a bit of a jump to call the guy an idiot, in any case, if he simply started lapping up what Zizek was saying that would come off too weak and would make poor viewing for anyone who isn't an inveterate Zizek acolyte. I like Zizek because he has interesting and original insights, not because of his intelligence or knowledge.
What's he saying on 0:40 "but ??? I prefer it the wrong way" 2:58 "Society of consumption, Uuh we ??? and so on" 3:01 "and no ??? no constraints and so on" 4:11 "so called ??? doctrine which" I'm translating some of Zizek's videos on UA-cam. And this one was awful and awfully funny. I wonder what "Dennie Leary " means in this context.
He lied when he said he tried to read it because he could not have read it with his intelligence level which is equal to my toe nail. Actually a chocolate laxative has more purpose to it that he will ever have in his life.
randylahay, i think you misunderstand. The above comment does not contain any hate, because he has his right as an intelligent man, to speak of the poor intelligence of some people compared to others. ! ;)
wow they let anyone in mensa. but seriously can u really respect a organization that allows anyone who scores high enough on a internet iq test? sounds like a club where people gather together to feel special.
I hate being contrarian, but Zizek does come out with some absolute shit sometimes.. the post modern tolerant father for instance, there are mad little rants like this littered all over his work, when he discusses orientalism and frequently uses popular culture as a means of highlighting arguments: Kung Fu Panda being one of the most hilarious. I think people fail to realise a lot of the time he's being down right absurd, taking the piss even! Yep thumbs down please.
LOL the interviewer Barry Nolan has an IQ higher than 99% of you. inb4 people go all post-modern on me about IQ not measuring creativity and open mindedness.
That is exactly the conversation I would expect between a typical late night talk show host and a typical philosopher.
Zizek when interviewers try to play smart with him: eck, pure ideology
Zizek when interviewers understand that he's definitely smarter than them: *explains his opinions in a very clearly and concise fashion, using mostly lay speak
"TRYIN' TO LIVE HEALTHY IS KILLIN' ME! YEAH!" Preach, brother.
Nolan's shouted interjections are hilarious!
"I'm beginning to get IN to this Lacanian stuff!"
hahaha that was amazing
"Living healthy is killing me" is actually a funny line.
" YEAH! "
I don't know what anyone's talking about. It's a wonderful interview. The host isn't really familiar with the stuff Zizek is about, but its still a productive discussion
the exchange at 3:57 is hilarious
"yeah, fine, denis leary...just let me keep talking"
Let's go easy on the interviewer. This is actually a fantastic moment between philosopher and a well-meaning interviewer, who is pretty receptive. There is, I think, a genuine connection between the two and thank god the interviewer doesn't go on some rant denouncing Zizek for his beliefs.
If there is any hope for meaningful change in this world, we must have this kind of genuine connection between gifted thinkers and everyone else.
'This is the most complicated book I've ever had to read'.
I'm getting, that isn't much of a stretch.
"I'm beggining to like this book all the more!"
*looks at camera nervously wondering if the viewer noticed the contradiction of him previously saying he had read the book*
He did say "TRIED to read".
Yes, the host seems really ignorant and misses the point constantly. It's admirable how Slavoj never puts him down or treats him badly. He just tries to explain his views and even gets to use really mundane examples to ilustrate them to his interviewer
I think zizek likes him
what, do you WANT him to put the host down? lol
lyndon bailey zizek is nice
The interviewer is the ultimate irony, it just makes me laugh to tears.
I absolutely admire the passionate, upbeat enthusiasm Americans seem to portray, I think its great. But this Nolan guy, hes a slight step to far and makes me quite glad I live in the negative and bitter UK, where humour is the best answer for everything. God bless America and God bless Zizeck
Slavaž Žežek iz Lubdžana! :)
This is the closest approximation we'll ever get to Zizek being interviewed by an in-character Fred Willard.
Zizek makes me warm on the inside - he is so wonderful and his psychoanalysis is astounding!
Hey! Lighten up on the host! He did his job: When he wasn't prompting Zizek to hold forth, he pretty well stayed out of the way and let his guest talk. He could've been a _lot_ worse....
So true
i love zizek's final remark
"You're kind of Dennis Leary from Slovenia!"
"yeah"
"Yeah!"
HAHA
you're right of course, though I think if this interview were my first exposure to Zizek my reaction would be more one of bewilderment than understanding
Interviewer: "This is hardest book i've ever tried to read"
Zizek: "strange, because you're dumb"
Still the greatest TV interview of all time
It was awfully brave of him to conduct an interview on a topic of which he seems to've had no prior knowledge, and I'm sure Barry Nolan is good at what he does. But due to the extent to which the format is horribly ill-suited to explaining Zizek's ideas, this video is funny to me.
ok. but what does the beard tell us? it is not what it says overtly but rather its hidden message. The beard on the face is not a vagina but rather the absence of a vagina.
rofl.
not absence of a vagina- absence of vagina, precisely
I agree with the comment below, the interviewer is not so stupid as everybody thinks. He understands Zizek's humour, explain things so it's understandable for the viewers, they seem to enjoy each other's company.
Thank you very much! Seems that I need more study. His Slovenian accent sounds cool to me Japanese.
That's the most Zizek federally allowed on American Television. His interview with Charlie Rose is probably the reason the Koch brothers bought up a good portion of PBS.
Barry Nolan is terrific. I love this interview. You yt goons should get over yourselves.
Believe it or not Nolan is a member of Mensa.
for a show that is really meant to little house wives and old ladies i think the interviewer did a good job of elucidating zizek's words.
"I never thought i would have that much fun talking about a thing like this"
I have a new hero!
I've never been to the US or had a conversation with an USAmerican, but somehow I got that feeling everything he explains is the exact opposite of the american education and their weltanschauung (*I love that german word in the english dictonairy)
this is the craziest zizek interview to date. i think that the host not having any knowledge of philosophy or zizek makes it even better.
for all those who can not pronounce Slavoj Žižer right, try this. Slavoy Zhizhek
The smile at the beginning
totally agree!!
I found myself changing my opinion about Zizak, I might even take the trouble to read a bit more of his philosophy, so i say good for the host and his boss!
Look, he has a show to run and an audience to keep in mind and a guest whose English has a strong accent --
that interviewer couldn't care less
damn. he shouldt interupt him. need to read the book !
when someone asks who lacan is, i make him listen the first 6 seconds.
Oh, by the way, Zizek wants us to think and not (necessarily) to 'understand' him.
man, zizek is the bomb
Genius
I felt like Zizek walked into the wrong interview and said fck it, sat down and started talking.
I bet it was the first time he heard that name
holy young zizek
The description of the video is genial, lol
Fala aí!
@OuTofJoY Member of MENSA? Very interesting. I was getting the same vibe as other people commenting on his poor interviewing, but you are right about that fact.
@ericburdontheanimal Where on your keyboard are those small signs above the z's?
Tryin to live healthy is killin me!
I hate how the interviewer interrupts a genius!! -.-
SLAVA JEJEK
Typical comments: "Zizek 'defeated' someone who was never presented as an enemy. He's so much smarter than me that I won't have to think for myself."
the host reminds me to barney the dinosaur in some way
@benooblak
Meni je super, kako se Žižek nasmehne, ko sliši, kako se komentator trudi z njegovim imenom :)
hahaha...love this interview
@acdcrocks4ever21 I understand him completely, not one word missed, I'm from South America. I also speak french and german, dont know if that's helped me.
Not all of us are that ignorant. There are some of us who still read. :)
Could someone tell me what the host says at 3.55 ?
'You're kind of Dennis Leary from Slovenia' I think anyway
Link?
@TheEruditepolymath I don't see anything here that makes me think "genius." You must be referring to something he's written, which I'm not familiar with,
@liosama
ABSOLUTELY :D
I don't know if it helps but in another video he mentions the contradiction in 'tolerance.'

"so-called Colin Powell doctrine which"

ß¡łch
Why doesn't the journalist let him speak???
Wtf just happened in this interview?
he had plenty of time to learn to pronounce these words. I think american media types make a point of mispronouncing names of foreign things when they want to devalue them. "look as how juvenile this thing is, I didnt even bother to learn how to pronounce it.."
MENSA membership does indicate someone's intelligence. It does not however indicate someone's level of knowledge.
@copyzawa don't worry i'm from slovenia and nobody understands him even here
the only one that understands him is himself
What's he saying on
0:40 "but ??? I prefer it the wrong way"
2:58 "Society of consumption, Uuh we ??? and so on"
3:01 "and no ??? no constraints and so on"
4:11 "so called ??? doctrine which"

The interviewer should eat some laxative chocolate!
Host: "I believe you're reinforcing my worldview because I see neoliberalism as morally imperative/ I don't understand subtext."
He lied when he said he tried to read it because he could not have read it with his intelligence level which is equal to my toe nail. Actually a chocolate laxative has more purpose to it that he will ever have in his life.
0:12 slavage jay jack
randylahay, i think you misunderstand. The above comment does not contain any hate, because he has his right as an intelligent man, to speak of the poor intelligence of some people compared to others. ! ;)
Sane.
@ 3:59 zizek hates the host for comparing him to Dennis Leary...
Wow the host handled himself a bit foolishly but times were weird back then.
This interview should never have happened.
slavoy zhizhek and no ljubljana isnt prononcued lubzhana its looblanah
america and other "investor-friendly" nations are the only ones with "awful taxes".
@tigerz2350 Well said
@liosama
Yeah but at least hes not bill o'reilly. Imagine the bickering...
@OuTofJoY ahaha that's great I didn't know about that. here's an article about it for anyone who's interested: bit.ly / ciIXLU
wow they let anyone in mensa. but seriously can u really respect a organization that allows anyone who scores high enough on a internet iq test?
sounds like a club where people gather together to feel special.
Holy shit this is fucking hilarious!
"Makes Freud sound like a valley girl."
So how does Marx make Hegel sound then?
Barry Nolan dont understand a thing.
hahaha
OMG!... he should have been adviced how to pronounce slavoj at least!... it is very close to savoy...
HE HAS A MORE RUSSIAN EXENENT THAN SLOVENIAN HAHAH
@Intelectual95 ill give you and advice. stop reading books written by philosophers and rather switch to high-quality literature.
Woah that guy's pronounciation is off.
@acdcrocks4ever21
you need to speak for yourself then
I hate being contrarian, but Zizek does come out with some absolute shit sometimes.. the post modern tolerant father for instance, there are mad little rants like this littered all over his work, when he discusses orientalism and frequently uses popular culture as a means of highlighting arguments: Kung Fu Panda being one of the most hilarious.

gooosh,, why this guy interrupts Žižek all the time?!!! it's annoying!
