この頃のナムコは本当に神がかっていた。
I love this game! The way scaling is done on jump pads was awespme back in the day and the way you can fire a super shot by pulling both sticks apart. Love those dual joysticks for driving
当時、ほんと1cALLがキビしくマップ把握もパターン作成も苦労し、初めて1cALLした時閉店間際の静まり返った店内でこのエンディング曲は涙出てきました。ほんと苦労した当時を思い出します。
ゲーセンで稼働してた頃に全クリできたなんて羨ましいです・・・
The days when Namco were full of original ideas, that made them stand out from the other arcade manufacturers and designers.
Agree. Konami we’re known for beat ‘em ups, capcom was all around with good beat ‘em ups and shmups, but mostly fighting games, raizing and cave were shmups. I’d say Namco, midway, and taito were known for original ideas built around good graphics and music.

Almost thirty years later, I learn that when you roll the tank sideways, you can interrupt it and roll it back the other way again, you don't have to let it finish the complete roll in the direction you started. That would have been a lot of help when I was playing this back in 1988......

敵が地球軍で原住民族が蜂起して強奪した最新鋭戦車を駆って戦うという
善悪が逆転した展開に惹かれました。
BGMが本当に良い、ステージ1はBGMが無いのに２面から始まる演出も良い、エンディング曲も良いです
I never understood why this wasn’t adapted for the SFC/SNES. Seems like it would’ve been a natural fit.
I've wondered the same thing. It has "mode 7" written all over it. Reminds me of the overhead levels in Contra 3.
I believe Nintendo and Namco were not on good terms between the mid-80s and early 90s. Notice that the Namco titles on the NES was done by some other 3rd party company like Tengen or Bandai.
Seems too complex for the snes tbh, but maybe a lite version or something like that could work out

The zoom- and rotation-effects remind me a lot of the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo Mode 7. Maybe the Nintendo System-Developers liked Assault and were inspired ;-)

I don't know if the sprites were individually drawn for each angle or if hardware sprite rotation was in play. It looks like a lot of work if the former. Whatever the solution - this game seriously impressed me when I first saw it
Lots of hardware scaling and rotation in Namco games around that time. Look at Valkyrie no Densetsu and Phelios for more awesome sprite scaling and rotation.

Ah memories this game was soooo much fun .. just rare as hell I’ve only seen it in one arcade in my whole life. Played it for hours but unable to finish it
Think I only saw it in one arcade too...wasn't until the early 2000's I got it on playstation and. Completed it after weeks of trying..🤗🤗
@@goonerash Thank you so much! I played this on arcade in our local Laundromat as a kid and have never seen it again. I had no idea that it was released on the PS1 compilation. Going to have to get this!
I played it a lot but it was a quarter monster. It would eat all my quarters.
I finished it once but I was nowhere near as good as this guy. Also I remember a huge flying battleship thing on the last level that followed you around the level. Very hard to kill.

well this is one hell of a tough game so there is no shame.
Terrific game, my top 5. If you get the PS4 version it is amazing and both sticks work as they should, plus you can add scanlines and it looks terrific!
I know controlling tank with sticks gives this game more realistic, but I've gotten used to control with normal arcade controller...

At that time, most of gamers played Vulcan Venture(a,k,a Gradius2)in my neighbor and Assault was removed from arcades in short period.

It just got released on PS4 and Switch etc.

Weird thing is that the plot to this game is quite similar to Avatar.
for some reason, level 6 always reminded me of the urban combat in Full Metal Jacket.

Setting this game up properly in MAME has been a real chore; I need to rig up some proper 2-directional sticks to get the maneuvering right.
I really liked this game and I have been a MAME user for a while but now I have to consider building by own joystick cabinet just to play 5his the right way. Did you finish your build yet? Do you have photos?

そう・・・このゲームも地味な戦車ではなく、かっちょいいロボットだったら、もっと大衆受けしていたかもしれませんね・・・

家庭用に移植されても普通のコントローラーでは面白さが半減してしまうと思う
移植されたらメルヘンメイズみたいになっていたと想像できます。
確かナムコミュージアムVOL5にこれ、アサルトは収録されていたと記憶してます。操作はレバーと○ボタン同時押しで前進。レバーの下と○ボタンで左方向の超新地旋回。みたいな。ショットはR1ボタン。なれるの大変でした。
