- Assault (c) 1988 Namco.
Your mission is to reclaim your homeland by destroying the enemy forces that have taken over. You have an Assault tank, the supreme mobile weapon. Your tank has artillery guns and grenades, can perform Rapid Rolls to dodge enemy shots, and uses Power Wheelies to launch grenades.
Your controls are two 4-position joysticks with triggers. These controls make Assault like no other tank game. You have a quick, highly responsive vehicle with fast movement in all directions. To avoid enemy shots, Rapid Roll your tank left or right by moving both joysticks to the same side. To launch grenades, put the tank in the Power Wheelie position by moving both joysticks to the outside, then pressing either trigger. Your grenades are triple the fire power of your tank's standard shots.
Your tank is always in the center of the screen no matter what direction you are going. With Assault's 360-degree scrolling playfield, the world rotates around you as you move. An arrow always points you towards the exit to the next level.
The lift zone gives you an advantage over the invaders and a spectacular view of the playfield. Each lift zone is a five-sided platform on the playfield that flashes red when you can use it. When you drive onto the lift zone, your tank jets straight up to get a birdÆs eye view of the surrounding terrain and enemy lines. From this overhead position, you can reconnoiter enemy forces and bomb enemy outposts.
Fight your way through 11 different levels to seek out and destroy the invaderÆs headquarters. To succeed, you must :
* Dodge enemy gunfire with the Rapid Roll maneuver.
* Assault enemy lines with long-range powerful grenades launched from Power Wheelies.
* Destroy all enemy tanks you encounter to prevent rear attacks.
* Bomb enemy outposts and reconnoiter enemy emplacements using the lift zones.
* Protect yourself against enemy artillery using buildings and trees.
* Blow up the large cannons on each level while you avoid enemy attacks.
* Follow the arrow to find the exit to the next level. Before you can exit, you must destroy the large cannons defending the enemy strongholds.

The Assault dedicated cabinet is a real favorite among arcade game collectors. This is probably due to its unique shape, and non-standard controls. The Assault cabinet was very narrow, the vertical open frame monitor barely fit between the sides of the thing, which were less than 18'' apart. A standard arcade cabinet is about 23'' wide if it is an older style one, or 30'' wide for one of the newer deluxe cabinet styles. So Assault was very narrow, probably the narrowest game ever made. The top half of the cabinet is decorated with sideart that is supposed to resemble the outside of a yellow tank, and these same graphics carry on over the monitor bezel and control panel as well.
Cabinet dimensions : 74, 25'' (188, 60cm) high x 25, 50'' (64, 77cm) wide x 34, 50'' (87, 63cm) deep.
Cabinet weight : 285 lbs (129, 28 kg).

- TRIVIA -
Released in April 1988.
Licensed to Atari for US distribution.
This game uses a unique control method and uses 'Mode 7' background scaling and rotation effects like those found in Super Famicom's games. The most interesting feature is firing 'catapult' bomb shots far away with the left joystick pushed to the left side and the right joystick to the right at the same time, while pressing the fire trigger.
An upgrade of this game is called "Assault Plus".
Victor Entertainment released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Namco Video Game Graffiti Vol.3 - VDR-5278) on 16/12/1988.

Yes!! Finally found it! Could never remember the name (Assault - so generic!) Man, I LOVED this game. Spent all my pocket money on it back in the day. Would love to find an original cabinet.
Me also .
I absolutely adored this game. Graphics & smooth movement were tip-top. One of Namco's best game games IMO.
We used to line up at the AAFES at Fort Knox KY when I was in tank school in '89 and '90. Those were the good old days of coming off the gunnery range and seeing who was the best arcade gunner. Spent a ton of quarters in that game. Great times.
Wow! Haven't seen, or heard, Assault since the many hours I played it in high school- I was hooked on this game- Very nostalgic! Thanks for sharing-
I wonder why this was never ported to the SNES? The scaling and rotation of objects aside, it could have replicated those backgrounds (and the sound effects) almost perfectly!
One of my favorite games! Great game, great sounds and music too. Namco rules!
When I was a kid we used to go to Telemark ski resort in Wisconsin and they had this game in their arcade room. I really loved playing it because of the dual joystick controls and because of the gameplay itself...so fun.
I use to feel like such a bad ass playing this. Loved this game and it still looks as amazing as I remember
Absolutely one of my favorite games ever. Back in my freshman year in college, I played every day trying to finish it on a single quarter...and finally did.
I have the PSX version and most of my old skill, but the analog controller doesn't quite have the right feel for me to match that feat today with my 20-year-older reflexes.
Looks like you still have the touch...
I played this game a ton back in the day but couldn't remember the name. Thanks for the video. It helped me figure it out.
I was driving by neighbor's house and this arcade game was on the sidewalk with a FREE sign on it…WTF. It's in my garage and works like a charm!
You lucky bastard :)))) cannot believe such a crazy luck !
Topesio66 I just sold it for $350.00 to a deserving fan on Craigslist.
very interesting game, never would have thought about rolling the tank body or floating up into the air. These mechanics are underused in games these days.
I spent most of my quarters at Aladdin's Castle playing this game, but haven't seen it anywhere since that place closed. I wish I could find any place that had a working cabinet, or someone who was selling one. A local place to me, Galloping Ghost, has 200+ restored 80's games and I'm going to demand that they find one of these and put it up! I've been trying for years to remember what this game was called, let alone see gameplay footage. THANK YOU!!
I saw this in a Circle K one time and then again at the Boys and Girls Club. It was my favorite game when I was a kid, next to Street fighter II and Double Dragon and Street Smart.
Strafing and jumping flash-like jumping is pretty cool for such an old top down run 'n gun/action game.
I played this all through college at the student union building cafeteria and I remember TLC blasting through the room out of a jukebox.
Omg - I loved this game as a kid !!
Used to love this game. Dropped a good portion of my teenage wages in it. :p
Thank you. I loved playing this game and it was fun watching you play!
This was such an awesome game. I feel guilty that I had forgotten all about it.
my dad always liked this one
I could beat this game with one quarter. Loved this game.
It would be nice if there was a complete walkthrough for this game. Excellent game, a decade ahead of it's time. Too bad there are no other sequels to this wonderful IP.
Thanks for putting this up. Beautiful game.
Great! Did you play with two sticks? or did you play one stick version?
Severely underrated game...
I play this in 1992 in Romania ♡♡♡
I wish someone would make this game for Xbox and the iPhone. The controllers for XBox are perfect for this. I loved this game as a kid.... if XBox doesn't come out with it some day soon I'm going to buy the actual machine.
You should try to stall until the very last second to kill the last big gun and end the round. If you make the last bullet hit the last gun on exactly 0 seconds, it will credit you for the full time that you started the round with. The bonus will be larger and you can wring even more points out of the game.
I thought I had completely hallucinated this game.
The Assault game is a classic 4 realz!!!
OMG this game rocks!!
Did assault ever have a different music track? I seem to remember it having a more bass beat to it.
i need to buy this arcade!
Dang.. impressive for 88
Favorite arcade game. The only one I ever spent the time to get good at.
How did you film this? Also, anyone know if there is a version online, sort of like the Internet Archives stash?
MAME is your friend here. Google it, thank me later...
got this working on MACMAME but my PS3 controller doesn't react the way it should. which game controller did you use?
Looks like a Super Nintendo game!!!!
This game needed a SNES port.
@shawbros
I have been trying to find joysticks for this game for my MAME cabinet. I have not been able to find them.
.
Where did you buy them?
PROUD OF U, BRO! U'r good, but not as good as me ;)
i love this game.
How did you filter the graphics? Is this even on MAME?
Do a (tank) barrel roll!
I see you're not playing the game at the factory default settings- you're at diffculty level B, where factory is C.
You're getting bonus lives & more time that an average player.
Having said that, that's some impressive game play!
Every Namco System II game has default factory settings at difficulty level B ( which is Normal difficulty), whereas level C is hard difficulty and can be set from service mode.
men have to be in charge!
Hola alguien que me ayude porfavor
Tengo esté jueguito en emulador en un ps 4 y creo que puedo disfrutarlo mucho pero tengo un problema no logró que avance en tanque solo gira y no avanza asía delante como lo hago porfavor
those flying things are shitty, constantly forcing you to back up
stages 2 song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this game is awesome but the control sucks!
Doesn't suck. U just don't have the correct hand/eye coordination :P
