You are watching a performance when they were already old. This was their hit from the early 1960's ... without which they were going to break up. Such a simple song that works so well.
I'd recommend checking out their live performance of this song, from their infamous concert in Central Park as well. This is a great performance, but they were at their musical peak when they did the Central Park concert.
I saw Simon and Garfunkel about 15 years ago, it was one of the BEST concerts I have been to, and they sounded JUST as GOOD as they did back in the '60s. WONDERFUL!!
I think I prefer this version over the studio version. The studio version felt too fast, this seemed more heartfelt. Both are good, though. Truly amazing musicians!
The original Wednesday Morning 3AM version is slower with little instrumentation in comparison to the better known single version released a year later.
The studio version did not originally have that up-tempo rock accompaniment; it was remixed and re-issued as a single because the song just wasn't taking off as it was originally recorded. Paul was "horrified" when he heard the remix; Art, not so much.
Jamel, did you notice towards the end when they sang, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls and whispered in the sounds of silence"? Your buddies in RUSH tweaked the line in "The Spirit of Radio" towards the end with the lyric, “For the words of the profits are written on the studio wall, Concert hall - and echoes with the sounds…of salesmen.” NICE 👌
Did you know that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson did an amazing accoustic version of Cream's "Heart Full of Soul", live on thier R40 tour? Two accoustic guitars (Ged played a rhythm guitar) and one voice. Alex's accoustic guitar playing, as all RUSH fans know, is impeccable. I'd love for Jamal to react to that one, too.
I remember when this aired. It was a childhood favorite, and I LOVED this version. It just so happens that I really like the Disturbed cover-I rarely like any covers-but man. This. One of the best songs in my lifetime. Thanks, Jamal.
Oh how I have loved this song by these 2 performers -- all the way back since it was released. I have a DVD of this show -- some of the music brought tears to my eyes ... all the memories!!!
This is our folk music, from the height of the sixties (1965) during a time that we were torn because of the war in Vietnam, and the war in our cities and states for civil rights, the war on poverty. There was a lot going on during that time and here were these two folk singers putting it all to music, subtle and clean. I have lived my whole life with a special place in my heart for Folk Music/Americana, and its ability to put into a wonderful melody our hopes and our fears. It sometimes even gives us a solution if we listened carefully.
My dad used to play S&G during my childhood 🙂. Art G. had an ethereal voice in his prime, and Paul S. is an extraordinary songwriter and musical artist. Side note: my dad was born in Manhattan and raised in Queens, NY.
your dad sounds awesome lol. queens is where they were from too, well simon was born in NJ. i am from queens also and my dad got me hooked on these guys early. it’s the reason i got into music young, and have been singing since 🤍
@@frehleyscomet8812 yes, you're right 🙂: from what I've read, Paul Simon was technically from NJ. My dad grew up in Middle Village in Queens, and he eventually moved to a desert state (where I was primarily raised, but not AZ), & then a mountainous state. One of his siblings stayed in NY, and 3 of their (now) adult kids. My dad is a highly intelligent, highly educated, thoughtful, gentle, and loving man. 💗💞💕

Simon and Garfunkel were the OG. And the country at the time Simon wrote this song was such that this song was THE anthem , and their voices WERE the cry in the distance. Amazing duo that should have had a long career, if they could have gotten along. This reunion was considered iconic BECAUSE of their history. Disturbed's reimagining of the song is unique in being almost as iconic as the original, that doesn't happen often. And as good as it is, sometimes you just need to hear the original as intended. Great stuff.
Thank you! Thank you for playing all this great music! The songs today leave something to be desired. Groups/ single singers lack the passion in their singing. I'd like to hear your reaction to two Neil Diamond songs. Who I think is the best songwriter and musician. The two songs.... "I am I said", and "Love on the Rocks". Thank you!
They do harmonize so well together. They did so through the 60s as well as each time they reunited. They had the top selling album in 1970 with their fifth and final album; Bridge Over Troubled Water.
NO ONE can touch the magnificence of Simon and Garfunkel on their own songs. You need to hear their studio version of this song which is absolutely amazing with a full orchestra, etc., but oh those fortunate souls that were able to see this scaled down simple reunion performance in person!
One of the greatest Duos in modern music History!. The sound as crisp as they did 58 years ago, if this doesnt speak Mountains about their professionalism!!!!🇺🇸✌
I don't cry easily. This performance, after hearing the original when I was young, and after the bitter split they went through, and coming back together more seasoned and wiser, more compassionate, brought me to tears. I feel sure the song had a deeper, more personal meaning to them this time around.
I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
I first seen this in the early 1980’s and became a lifelong fan. Their harmonies are just outstanding. Paul Simon’s song writing ability has ensured that he has been a very successful artist

I usually prefer studio versions to live performances but on this one I agree wholeheartedly.
Me too.. this live is so powerful
There will never, ever be a time that I hear this song that it doesn't give me goosebumps. #timeless
@@martyadams3172 Heart Full of Soul is The Yardbirds.
I remember when this aired. It was a childhood favorite, and I LOVED this version. It just so happens that I really like the Disturbed cover-I rarely like any covers-but man. This. One of the best songs in my lifetime. Thanks, Jamal.
A magical fusion of voices, ethereal harmonies and brilliant, otherworldly(looking in) songwriting. Thanks, Jamel.
simon and garfunkel had unmatched harmonies. i love them.
Those dudes were/are absolutely amazing!
Their harmony is still spot-on!! Thanks Jamel !👍✌
More than just a great song itself sung by great talent, it was the cultural changing time it came out 'the 1960's'...No cover can ever replace that.
The best concert I ever attended was these guys. Art, Paul, Paul's guitar and a bass player.
This song made a big impression when it came out. The song itself is beautiful, their voices stunning, and the lyrics so raw and enlightened.
Such a song with a message. the both of them geniuses. Another good one "I am a Rock"!!! 😊❤
My dad used to play S&G during my childhood 🙂. Art G. had an ethereal voice in his prime, and Paul S. is an extraordinary songwriter and musical artist. Side note: my dad was born in Manhattan and raised in Queens, NY.
And S&G grew up in Queens.
your dad sounds awesome lol. queens is where they were from too, well simon was born in NJ.
i am from queens also and my dad got me hooked on these guys early. it’s the reason i got into music young, and have been singing since 🤍
@@frehleyscomet8812 yes, you're right 🙂: from what I've read, Paul Simon was technically from NJ.
@@detectivekornfed that is such a beautiful to say about your father ❤️
wow.
middle village! my family is from forest hills.
@@frehleyscomet8812 thank you! My dad is one of my heroes, and one of the best people I've known. He's endured a lot. I wouldn't be who I am without him; hence, why I appreciate, and value, nuance and wisdom. 😃
Never saw that video before, amazing performance
Music so beautiful... It's hard to believe they couldn't stand each other .
Music was never better when these guys showed up. Pure genius. This song is so moving.
In High School English class in the '70s, we studied this song, and others from that time. Poetic times, for sure.
Great Song, Grafunkels voice is like a musical instrument
NO ONE can touch the magnificence of Simon and Garfunkel on their own songs. You need to hear their studio version of this song which is absolutely amazing with a full orchestra, etc., but oh those fortunate souls that were able to see this scaled down simple reunion performance in person!
Still gives me chills all these years later! 🎶❤️🎶❤️
One of the greatest Duos in modern music History!. The sound as crisp as they did 58 years ago, if this doesnt speak Mountains about their professionalism!!!!🇺🇸✌
Gives me chills. Beautiful perfection.
I don't cry easily. This performance, after hearing the original when I was young, and after the bitter split they went through, and coming back together more seasoned and wiser, more compassionate, brought me to tears. I feel sure the song had a deeper, more personal meaning to them this time around.
Thank you. This lifted my Spirit today. I remember when they were first getting started. They were great decades before Autotune was created.
Paul's guitar intro was so beautiful. I could listen to this every day.
Their harmonies on the embellished lyric "take my arms that I might reach out to you" really echoes their considerable Everly Brothers influence.
I just love this. Nothing like the original. They’re one of the first groups I listened to. Paul Simon is a poet
The title of the Simon & Garfunkel song was The Sounds of Silence. It referred to all the sounds in the world that we willfully ignore.
I was going to say this is my absolute favourite by Simon and Garfunkel but, there are just too many to choose from!
he has listened to the studio version. He said he's checking out some of the live versions of stuff he's already heard.
@@stich21 OK thanks I missed that I thought he just heard the other version
Paul Simon at Ground zero is my favorite.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SONG!!
Never ever gets old. As beautiful and relevant to day as it was in the late 60's. TY!
Fabulous song....you must listen to Simon and Garfunkle's "The Boxer" it'll bring tears to your eyes....
I really like the Boxer.
Their song "Kathy's Song" is one of the best love songs ever written!! I'd recommend the original or Eva Cassidy's cover!!!
I love hearing Art sing it.
This has always been my favorite version ever. Love the original!
They definitely knew how to sing together.
They've known each other since they were 12...
My father had their greatest hits album in the early '70s when I was a toddler. They have been one of my favorite groups since then.
My dad absolutely loved this band and used to listen to them all the time. Just listening to them brings back so many great memories of him.
Okay, I've not seen this live version before and it flat-out gave me chills. Jamel, everything you said was true about them. Great video!
It was part of a concert released by HBO, I reccomend you watch it all.
@@farmerbill6855 Thanks for the heads-up!
Every time I’m laying by the swimming pool, this song pops into my head, Every time.
Plastics
Paul Simon is a masterful storyteller. HIs lyrics are like an artist's brush on canvas, painting us a vivid picture of "10,000 people, maybe more."
And God said, "let there be 2-part harmony", and behold there was Simon & Garfunkel.
Heavens choir is waiting for Art to get there and show them how it's really done! 👍✌
I could listen to this, and John Lennon’s “Imagine” on an endless loop. Truly timeless songs
Jamel, you’re right they still sound great together
Jamel ... I LOVE your love of music and your appreciation of how music is universal and touches ALL. You're a pioneer my friend!!!!
