I'm English and my wife is from Bosnia (half Croat, half Bosniak). We have travelled really widely in the ex-Yugo countries before and after we had kids. I have to say the most beautiful areas I have seen were in Croatia but far and away the nicest people as a group are the Serbs. One of my wife's favourite places is Belgrade even though it's not the prettiest city. She told me that the people there, apart from being really warm hearted, are the one's who are the least interested in her ethnicity. They just take her for who she is and she can be herself.

Whatever has happened in the past happened and there’s no denying history however the balkans will never move forward to a bright future if we don’t put the past behind and unite. We (the balkans) are home to the most beautiful mountains, beaches, landscapes, historic cities and culture but without unity we are all nothing. If every country in the balkans loved, protected, and helped each other imagine how strong everyone would be.

It is not important for life to be beautiful but meaningful. True joy cannot be felt if there was no sorrow before it. We Serbs are not different or better than others in any way, we are just honest. And you can change that into yourself overnight. First, become honest with yourself, and others will already feel it. :)

Thank you so much for this video. I live in Canada, but my closest friends are Slavs from Russia and Serbia. The depth of our conversations is unparalled. Without them, I would have no one to truly open up to. My cultural roots on my mom's side go back to the Balkans (Romania / Moldova), and I resonate with almost everyone I've met from the Balkans or Russia. I can't say that about anyone else in Canada, although I get along well with other foreigners from cultures where family is valued (e.g., Chinese, Latin American, Ethiopian) -- But, it's not as effortless and... soul-to-soul as it is with slavs.
Where does it come from? I was raised with somewhat slavish (Slav-ish not slave-ish :-)) values, and have some Balkan blood, but I was raised in much different conditions. Even as an empathetic person I can't truly understand the hardships faced by many in the Balkans.
So, I think this kinship we feel with Serbs is mostly due to their integrity, in a world where it's lacking.
As of today I'm seriously considering moving to the Balkans, likely Belgrade, but I don't want to abandon my family and few close friends here in Canada. I'm lucky to run a business that I can operate remotely, so perhaps I could spend half the year there, half here in Canada.
I can't complain. I'm among the most fortunate on Earth to be born with a Canadian passport and come from a stable, loving family. I've never lived through war or poverty. But, while I and my countrymen are lucky, my favorite people have come from more modest means, from countries like Serbia.

    • @astrhea
      @astrhea 6 років тому +3

thank you for your kind words. ....
integrity... you don't hear that word often. it's even harder to find it. being half serbian, i like to think of myself as having deep sense of honour, dignity, pride, integrity, honesty, fairness, kindness, love for my people - love for all people - the values i learnt from my family. unfortunately, i'm not sure any longer that all serbians and politicians in particular, share those values these days - especially when it comes to love of their own people.

Bacically what tou are saying is that Serbia is the best country to live in if you can achieve the middle class living standard (assuming that there is a lack of one there). And i totally agree with you. With a little bit more than 1000€-sallary and a place to live you can live like a king here. The recipe youve given is definitely worth of trying. Working online for a company from, lets say, Canada you can easily earn much more than those 1000 € which will ensure you high living standard in Serbia. And once you are settled money-wise, Belgrade is really the best place to be. Ive never been to a place that offers so much. It is the most vibrant and pleasent place i’ve been to.

Dude, I am from Slovakia and seeing this video made me cry inside and miss my counrty. Even though I have never been to Serbia or met a Serbian person in my life, I can somehow relate to what you were saying in the video. I am new to the channel and was wondering if you did a separate video on your family origins, I would be very interested to hear about that :) Greetings from Denmark

Slovaks are very much like Serbs, and Czechs are more like Croats. I had a friend in Slovakia ( Trnava) and I spent there a couple of months; great people, great experience. At least it was like that then, I have no idea how it is today...

I have to disagree with you, since as a Slovak I have witnessed 0 percent of hatred between us and our Czech brothers. We understand each other perfectly and like to enjoy each other's countries and languages. :) The only notable difference is when we are playing ice hockey against each other, but after that we can just sit down, have some Pilsner beer or kofola and enjoy ourselves. I am pretty sure this is not just my personal opinion but rather a widespred mindset.

@@peterroman1554 When I made this comparison, I didn't want to point to antagonism, but more to difference in character between Slovak and Czech! I am perfectly aware that your relationship is much, much better than one between us and Croats...

I couldn't agree more. I spent 3 months in Serbia on three different occasions. I've never felt more at home. I've lived in many countries, and pretty much everywhere, people just judged me for being who I am, especially in Latin America. But not in Serbia, there you can be what you truly are, for people there it's just a normal thing. Great videos by the way, I subscribed yesterday but I've watched many already. I might hit you up when I visit Serbia again, maybe we could have a beer. Really awesome and truthful way to describe serbians.

Erik I admire your courage moving to a country where a good 75% want to move away. I grew up in Canada but, I have recently moved to Belgrade. After living in British Columbia for over 23 years your comments regarding fucking fake smiles and alienation really hits home. I didn't know there could be a true emotion until I moved here. It's been particularly difficult to explain to Serbs(who were born in Serbia and never lived anywhere else) that the West isn't exactly the way it is portrayed. Any advice or is this simply a battle I'm not going to win. I hope you still feel the same way Serbs and I wish you continued success.

Thank you for sharing these feelings, you have no idea how much this resonates with me. I almost want to cry. I felt directed to watch this video, and now I know why. My grandmother is Serbian and i saw her for the last time when I was about 5 due to parents divorce. We were very close. I am also Canadian and moved to South America about 4 years ago with my husband. Anyways, I am exactly the way you describe yourself, slightly depressive at times, moody, dark, yet selfless, emotional, full of love and kindness. I give my life to my husband and kids, and they know and appreciate it. But it's so nice to hear that there this a country where everyone is like this and understands and respects you for who you are. I can't wait to visit, I have family there as well that saw me when I was only a baby. Thank you for this, thank you. Love and light.

the best thing about us Serbs is our sense of humor and that specific, natural positive energy that help us in the most difficult times to survive ...me personally had the best fun of my life during 1999 Nato bombing when all of us lived just for today and like there is no tommorow...crazy, crazy days that helped us to realise how little you need in life to be happy - just a peace without sound of airplanes in distance coming to drop the bombs on your head...

Mate, what you said about Canada is also true in much of the US - many people ostracize you if you are passionate about any deep emotion other than happiness. Perhaps this is really a first-world problem - people haven't suffered enough or struggled enough to be able to handle the dark side of reality.

Greetings Erik, I enjoy watching your videos as you give an interesting perspective on Serbian mentality. I've lived in Lisbon for more than a decade and I can definitely understand why you like it there. Being a Serb myself, I've found Portuguese people the closest to Serbs in terms of that warmth you're talking about. Having said that, I do notice that Portuguese people lack that all-important pathos, that patina, roughness around the edges only hardships and suffering bring forth. However, they do have their own version of Serbian "merak" and "žal" (look these up!;) in the form of fado which is really my emotional release. When I feel like I can't bear it anymore, I play one of my favourite fados, cry my eyes out, and with a cleansed heart am ready to face one of everyday's little fuck overs. Take care.

Most of us are really raised to be sincere and kind to other people. We can be pretty tough people also, it's been written in our genes troughout our history. We suffered a lot, fought many wars, lost many good, talented people, had our country's economy and infrastucture ruined a lot of times, often been misunderstood and presented as a bad guys... On top of it all, living standard here is really not the best, so it all leaves a good portion of young people here in some bitterness, almost depression. But we all fight it by sticking together, with a good humor and good RAKIJA, and our kindness and hospitality. All the regards, thank you for this video!

Really interesting! A Canadian living in Serbia. I've been to Guča Festival in 2013! Are you planning to go there, again? Have many cousins all over Serbia, but no one wanted to go there. But not only because of the reason you said, but also they think it's too commercialized. But I really did love the atmosphere, there. Due to the fact that there were many people from all over the world, the most weird thing was that most people thought I was a foreigner ('cause I do not look like a serb - whatever that might mean...;o)
Hope you still have a great time in Serbia!

We Poles and Serbs are one and the same folks artificially divided. Forget the f....n religious, etc differences.

Erik, this made my day! I'm a Canadian born Serb and so much of this speaks to my own feelings about growing up bicultural. Now personally, I'm not so crazy about Belgrade (go, Sombor!!) but the feelings you experience are all true. it's why I am still drawn to my community here in Canada, even... an oasis of openness where you know exactly where you stand. *and the only people who think that way of Guča Are those 'modern Serbs' who want to be EU drones, ashamed of their own heritage.

Hahahah yeah... you're bi-cultural and i'm a full blown trans-cultural world man by now. Slovak German Ukrainian Canadian now Serbian.
I know lots of Serbs in Canada, some of them are really doing okay, but then some of them I really pity, because they are miserable and they could do so much better over here emotionally if they'd move back.....
The whole divide between folk music rural people and urban people ashamed of their culture has gotten a lot narrower over the past few years. As for EU drones... I think the situation is more nuanced. I kind of like the way Serbia is changing outside of the EU, but at the same time I would like to be able to live here and do business in the EU without any problems.
Where do you live in Canada?

    serbia is so underrated.
people are bullying me bc I‘m from serbia but guess what… i really don’t care because i love being from serbia. these people in serbia are so kind like that’s unbelievable.
remember: never bully someone bc you don’t know what these people are going through or what they needed to go through.

As a Bosniak, Much love to the Serbian women and girls out there.(❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️)✌️✌️. Serbian guys don’t hate our women and girls, they had their fun with thousands of them in the aggression on Bosnia……
