Let's say we discovered seemingly designed technological machinery on another planet, but we did not observe any intelligent lifeforms on that planet. The machines would be positive evidence that intelligent lifeforms most probably existed, even though we couldn't directly observe any lifeforms on that planet. We have known for over 50 years now, that the cell is a highly technological machine, but way more advanced than anything we have ever made. It is filled with small complex machines which have specialized roles and all of them are interlinked with eachother. And the whole system does what it does based on highly specified instructions. The cell resembles technologies, like for example the computer, that obviously have been skillfully designed by intelligent humans. Whenever we see information, like coding in a computer or inscriptions in an Egyptian tomb, we know there is intelligence behind it. Isn't it reasonable then to conclude that the cell is positive evidence that an intelligent being created it? Nobody knows how the cell came into existence. The reason we still don't know how such a complex information-based technology came into existence, is because we have only evaluated purely materialistic explanations. Only intelligence can cause information, therefore the cause of the cell must be an intelligent mind. The evidence for God's existence is YOU!
“ the cell is way more advanced”. THE cell is very poorly designed. For one example (of many): It routinely makes mistakes when copying itself. Ideally it commits suicide, but sometimes it turns cancerous (spreading & killing the host).
As an English professor taught me: You don’t need to say “in my opinion” or theory or guess, because we already know it’s your opinion or theory or guess!
Everyone can believe what makes them comfortable (or were told to believe) but we shouldn’t impose our ‘story’ on others (laws, rules, expectations, etc).
We now have intelligence all collected in the Google vaults for almost everyone to access. What we need now is wisdom and understanding of how to use this knowledge.
According to the bible, man has a specific and special relationship with God. Unless we find a bunch of humans out there, theology will have to get really flexible really fast if we are to consider ET intelligence anything other than godless.
A salient question would be: does the concept of ''spirituality'' have something to do with intelligence, or is it is merely a human concept based on escapism and that does only exist within the human mind, just like the concept of God?
@John Dossey I am sure of it. nr.1 on their checklist is whether a new species is delusional, and has access to weapons of mass destruction at the same time.

“Learning knew things related to space” “No religion fully explains” It’s hardly Earth shattering news that no religion fully explains the “physical” universe when that’s not actually the purpose of religious expression. Equally, this assumption of a strictly reductive materialism is a question begging fallacy and special pleading fallacy of the highest degree. It’s a closed system that can not even be explained by the “Natural sciences” as we don’t even know what “matter” is and we have to appeal to metaphysical presuppositions such as prescriptive laws of logic, absolute “truth”, teleology, ontology and epistemology outside the closed system of eliminative materialism to even formulate a scientific hypothesis that has meaning and coherence. Think about it for a second because was your claim a scientific claim or a philosophical claim? Or to be more precise is the claim that “learning knew things about space” undermines faith an absolute “truth” claim or just subjective opinion (relativism). Sorry but the conflict myth between faith and science is exactly that, a myth and a false dichotomy perpetuated by militant atheism. Epistemology (learning new things) requires conscious agency and conscious beings who have developed a language that expresses real meaning and purpose. Similarly, a unified concept of “self” that includes epistemology, teleology and ontology including “truth” are philosophical, that is metaphysical presuppositions that can not be proven, justified or grounded in a strictly reductive materialism, atheism or philosophical naturalism that clearly excludes metaphysical realities. It’s self refuting because the proof of all these metaphysical realities is in their denial. I’m not making any appeals to authority but Aristotle debated the sophists centuries ago regarding metaphysical truths and the (truth) of the law of non contradiction and the sophists naively responded…. “You can’t prove that Aristotle!! because we could just come along and deny metaphysics and the law of non contradiction?” Aristotle responds brilliantly using a transcendental argument. Aristotle pointed out that when you deny something that’s so fundamental and paradigmatic as metaphysics and the laws of logic, that is the foundations of science itself the proof of that thing is that it’s assumed in its denial. It’s the same with objective morality, consciousness and prescriptive metaphysical presuppositions such as the laws of logic. Not to mention the absolute ontological ground of truth reality and existence. The proof is in their denial. The fact is that the “natural sciences” can’t “prove” anything as they are provisional and can only infer. It’s a constantly changing landscape regarding what (is) not what (ought) to be. The “natural sciences” does not make any capital T truth claims. It’s fundamentally agnostic when it comes to ontological claims regarding reality and existence and in particular the qualities of experience. Because truth with a capital T is the role of metaphysics, modal logic and analytical philosophy. Equally, according to the expert linguist and brilliant cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky… “There are only two ways of looking at eliminative materialism (the idea that all things reduce to solid substance). One is that it is total gibberish until someone tells us what matter is. Until someone tells us what eliminative materialism is there can’t be such a thing as eliminative materialism and no one can tell us what matter is”. (Noam Chomsky). Similarly, I’m not making any appeals to authority, but on the cognitive level Albert Einstein utilised a more nuanced approach and demonstrated that “matter” is nothing more substantive than the curvature of space and time which is why he completely rejected atheism for the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness. That is what Einstein “learned about space” caused him to completely reject atheism for the nuanced God of Spinoza/deism/panentheism. Similarly, Einstein’s closest friend Michelle Besso, who Einstein stated “was the greatest sounding board in Europe”, completely rejected atheism for the belief in the fundamental nature of mind and consciousness/monotheism (Christianity). Again I’m not making any appeals to authority.
An interpretation that works for me: Jesus was one prophet among several throughout human history. Gautama Buddha was another. And so on. If culture is about conforming to a cultural way of being, then what these prophets provided was an insight into a way of being that sees the big picture, beyond cultural subjectivity. Since culture is integral to intelligent life, then a "savior" is integral to properly interpreting it. Every advanced, civilized alien culture will therefore, likely, have its own prophet that saves it from inwards-focused, solipsistic groupthink.
The question could be rephrased, would intelligent aliens undermine a silly anthropomorphic myth-answer, no, because it’s a silly, anthropomorphic myth
One of the best CTT interviews. One thing that's missing - that all CTT episodes need to include - is the date on which the interviews were recorded. Interesting to track the development of interlocutors' arguments over time. Some interviewees were dead when the show aired, others have changed or subtly altered their views since the interview was shot.
I distrust with a passion anyone who proffers an absolute truth without robust evidence (religion) and I’d rather embrace the doubt that science gives.
It's like looking into outer space in multiple directions, with the most advance modern telescopes that can see billions of light years away, with some of the most intelligent minds calculating the inhabitability of planets and moons in sight and asking where are all these aliens and why aren't they there or anywhere? That's the truth. 😇
It’s almost impossible that there would be intelligent life on other planets not connected to this one because yes, there may be water or certain minerals that could create flesh , but what are the constructs of consciousness ? And how can Human consciousness be created on another planet ? What makes life on this planet unique is that it is the only thing that independently works against the forces of its own planet , and I doubt you can see something like that independently spring up somewhere else
this is making God so small by defining him in terms of institutionalized religion. No one knows who or what a God is, although based on our current understanding of the universe, it implies a Creator , the First Cause , the Prime Mover.
Why extraterrestrial beings should only look ugly and weird? There might be e.t. who look much more beautiful than the most beautiful human beings and have bodies that do not smell, therefore do not need to be washed and deodorized everyday.
Every sphere has its protocols - established, functional and to be respected. To attempt applying the protocols of one sphere to another [i.e the intellectual to the spiritual], especially when they are antithetical one to the other will be asking for nothing other than failure and frustration. Life has at least two spheres: the natural and the spiritual. In the natural, BELIEVING follows the sequence: Seeing, Experiencing and Faith; the empirical precedes belief. In the spiritual sphere, it is: Faith, Experiencing then Seeing; belief precedes the empirical/intellectual. As you might have observed, one is the direct reverse of the other.
one thing i learned from science fiction, movies and games. is that, when E.T. turns out to be hostile and starts invading our planet, the religious people will pray and be slaughtered by the hostile threat. while the non-believers will survive and fight and even save lives. a hostile extraterrestrial being is too much for a religious mind to comprehend and accept. all those years of believing, some even sacrificed their social life and dreams for that belief by being a priest and it turns out its all not true. it would break them.
“One thing I learned from science fiction” Erm that’s why it’s called “science fiction” buddy. Your brain washed by anti religious propaganda in Sci fi movies. It’s not real dude it’s just a movie and historically the arts including movies have been manipulated by the elites to promote their agenda through hate propaganda. You seriously need to get out more if you really believe that the movies portray religious expression in a balanced and unbigoted way. Get out and mix with different people from both sides of the debate. Sci fi movies aren’t a true reflection of reality. Hollywood is notorious for being dominated by politics and propaganda and cancel culture is now a fact of life and a form of religious fanaticism promoted by the left. Furthermore, history demonstrates that people who believe in objective morality make really good soldiers if they believe its for a genuine cause and will save more lives hence the six million polish Catholics who died fighting the Nazis and the millions of Christians on the side of the Allied forces from the UK and Europe who sacrificed their lives fighting Hitlers regime not to mention Hitlers horrific literal interpretation of Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” and Nietzschean “will to power”. Sorry but this is the kind of rhetoric that Hitler utilised to portray the religious as weak minded for being compassionate and it’s why he hated the Jews including Judeo Christianity. Hitler detested the church because of it’s compassion and concern for the weak and vulnerable in society but he needed them on his side until he seized total power in Germany. Hitler used this rhetoric of the weak minded gullible theist to justify the Holocaust. Your not the first to go down this road of demonising moderate religious expression. History clearly demonstrates that the consequences are monstrous when someone with this kind of mindset gets into power. Hitlers right hand man Joseph Goebbals wrote in his private diaries in 1941 that though Hitler was "a fierce opponent" of the Vatican and Christianity, "he forbids me to leave the church. For tactical reasons” (Joseph Goebbels).
“Sacrificed their social life” Sorry but this comes across as extremely ignorant and narrow minded. A shallow narcissistic, promiscuous life style that inevitably leads to a dark hole that has to be filled with addictive substances destroys any chance of a genuine “social life”. Are you for real? How could you possibly have all the worlds knowledge at your fingertips and make such a sweeping statement. Your promoting stereotypes!! This is unbelievably bigoted.
So beings with less intelligence than us will somehow be able to arrive on earth in craft capable to traveling across lightyears of space. This guy proves he's own point that spirituality and intelligence don't necessarily go together.
God is not some person sitting on the clouds and watching us carefully and taking notes of our sins and stuff. That's how religion portrays God. But it's nothing but bullshit and delusional. You see human beings are the most bullshitting creatures. God is the universe, that's infinite love and consciousness, and we're literally the universe. It takes some effort to come to terms with it.
This universe is an miniscule potion of God. A part contains a concept of the whole but is never equal to the whole. It's like when someone touches your hand, it's as if they touched you, but your hand isn't you. The body is a symbol of the living being.
God is Light, light is Photon. Light is both princible and attribute. The ineffable and and known. Both spiritual and physical. Nobody can deny God: Light, spirit, love, electromagnetism, life, generation, transformation. The energies, the laws, the nature. The Spirit, the cosmos, humanity.
Like religion, its all speculation. Believing in aliens doesn't mean you can't believe in a God and vice versa. Where it becomes unhealthy is some religious people straight up denying the science where we are literally finding other planets that can support life. And same for people who believe in aliens thinking their existence would mean there is no God.
I was thinking about aliens and the Fermi Paradox, when it occurred to me that we only recently confirmed the existence of planets outside our solar system. In our lifetime, before the Kepler space telescope confirmed it, we didn’t actually know that planets orbited around other stars. (It was a good inference given that we have several planets in our solar system. Nevertheless, it was a case study of one.) So, I wonder, how did we go from only just proving the existence of exoplanets, to concluding that if intelligent alien life was out there, that we would have surely detected it by now? To my mind, that is a common claim which is extraordinary and lacking evidence.
Strawman argument. Very few people are saying “We should have already detected alien intelligence.” Wise thinking men know it is difficult to see long distances, especially something as small as cities on an exoplanet
Here think about this God said to Abraham I'll make your descendants as numerous as stars and Jesus says behold I go and prepare a place for you, think about that one.
Religion: if you can't kill an idea. Find a way too blend it into the theology. It may not not kill god. But, it sure would put a dent in the idea of our special nature in this reality. By the time a life form develops a high level of intelligence. They may be on the way out. Just like us. Our time as the dominate species will at some point will be over. There is an obvious answer to this question. This conversation shows how much we have neglected in the West our understanding of nature as part of it. This creature, called Western civilization, has to turn into something more conscious, there is no other option. We must become humble and understandable. We must see others as equals, see them for what we are. We must surround animals and plants with love. This planet with all its biosphere is counting on us. Gaia perfectly remembers mass extinctions. We are the only hope for her. The very rapid development of our brains is the result of the cooperation of the biosphere of this planet.
Theoretical science yes it probably would. But we know things layered in facts. We understand for example inertia and cells. Our understanding of our own biology is unique to us. That would not change. However our understanding of astronomy and some other natural sciences can be undermined by a alien species that has mastered galactic space travel. Our religions and sciences would be undermined in different ways. They are completely different concepts. What would happen to religion and our sciences with aliens that predate us by thousands or even millions of years we simply do not know yet until we make first contact.

I don't believe in any Gods, but just for conversation's sake, since God obviously did not come from the Earth isn't God an alien?
@@iamfunnyipromise9605 That is extremely well put my friend, fair play.
“ the cell is way more advanced”. THE cell is very poorly designed. For one example (of many): It routinely makes mistakes when copying itself. Ideally it commits suicide, but sometimes it turns cancerous (spreading & killing the host).
The cell has so many inherent flaws, it is unlikely to be designed. (Orbif it was designed: The engineer did a lousy job and should be fired.)

God can make whatever he wants and as many as he wants.
According to the bible, man has a specific and special relationship with God. Unless we find a bunch of humans out there, theology will have to get really flexible really fast if we are to consider ET intelligence anything other than godless.

Learning new things related to space makes me move away from religion.
No religion fully explains how universe formed.
Nor are they trying. I'd be more concerned that science cant.
“Learning knew things related to space”
“No religion fully explains”
It’s hardly Earth shattering news that no religion fully explains the “physical” universe when that’s not actually the purpose of religious expression.
“You can’t prove that Aristotle!!
because we could just come along and deny metaphysics and the law of non contradiction?”
Aristotle responds brilliantly using a transcendental argument.
Equally, according to the expert linguist and brilliant cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky…
“There are only two ways of looking at eliminative materialism (the idea that all things reduce to solid substance).

“One thing I learned from science fiction”
Erm that’s why it’s called “science fiction” buddy.
For tactical reasons”

Interesting, even these pure speculations. But to be honest: your guess is as good as mine, right?
And maybe that´s the point here.
We didn't understand 2000 years ago, and today, we'll look the results around...
Nevertheless, it was a case study of one.)
So, I wonder, how did we go from only just proving the existence of exoplanets, to concluding that if intelligent alien life was out there, that we would have surely detected it by now? To my mind, that is a common claim which is extraordinary and lacking evidence.
Strawman argument. Very few people are saying “We should have already detected alien intelligence.” Wise thinking men know it is difficult to see long distances, especially something as small as cities on an exoplanet

Why would they bother? Intelligent aliens would have better things to do!
Nonsense...... With all do respect for this two discussing this subject...... COME ON!!!!!....I'm just shocked 😲 that with current understanding of human evolution any religion has any relevance whatsoever..... Good grief
Having said that I did enjoy this discussion 👍
Why is it that whenever the discussion turns to god it immediately sounds like unfalseifiable psychobabble?
Every main thiest argument like kalam contingency or mover very old argument are falsifiable
you just dont their argument because most militant athiest infamous for not being philosopher savi.
Very soon when I explained what is gravity and how it works I will explain how regular atoms transformed to become life form. I also will explain how atoms transformed to become nature like the trees vegetation all the greenery grows round of us. After that no one ever will talk about God. The only country will have that opportunity will be US government or few US scientists the one trusted by government, I'm doing every attempt to communicate with US government so far is unsuccessful, I'm trying every communication means to communicate with US government, if they don't give me any green light to open channel with then perhaps for humanity will take another 500 years until they figure out how all that works by their own.
Aliens? I call them immigrants.
God will make a new Heaven and a new Earth.
God has set the limits of our Universe. The closer we get to those limits what do you think we will find?
All of Mankind seeks to undermine God. Some more than others. It is in our nature.
Your God...
Maybe spirituality linked to how ordinary or common you are.
Dying "for God" or even dying for not denying God is far different from dying to kill others for yourself.
The suicide bomber is dying to kill others for themselves.
Tamil tigers were among first suicide bombers and they are athiestic Nationalist.
Suicide bombing is as grusome as any bombing...
Nothing out there. Traversing the interstellar medium even possible?
Johnny Utah What a waste of space that would be! You mean little ol' earth is alone in a fathomless multiverse? Not likely.
What aliens?
"if cattle or horses had hands and could draw, and could sculpt like men, then the horses would draw extraterrestrials
ike horses, and cattle like cattle" Xenophanes. Our discussion of extraterrestrials is irremediably anthropomorphic -- little greys with big eyes, nordics with blonde hair... total nonsense.
Good interview..Near the end Mr Stannard was mostly on his left foot, but had very interesting points throughout. Two things this respectable gentleman is likely wrong on tho..1) IF our society lasts another century or so, humans will be designed with mental capacities MANY times ours. 2) Contrary to Mr Stannards observation, there is a direct correlation between intelligence and a belief in theism..The HIGHER the intelligence the LESS likely one is to believe..Easily supported..Thanks Robert..
Rubbish. Many theological arguments are much more intelligent, precise and muscular than the gibberish that comes out of the heads of, for example, transhumanists, many of whom have multiple degrees from elite universities.
@@EastoftheDanube A response tinged with anger? You have my attention friend..What is the MOST robust example of a theistic theory that . might illustrate your claim ?
@@EastoftheDanube Ps..I'm NOT anti-God OR dismissive of these ideas..

@@Bill..N I don’t have time for a debate. But the late Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sachs had a fine intellect, much finer than say, Daniel Dennett or Richard Dawkins. Also the Emeritus Pope Benedict aka Cardinal Ratzinger is an excellent theologian. There are many more. Jonathan Pageau is a Christian apologist on YT and no one could call him stupid, much more intelligent than, say, Julian Savelscu, bio-ethicist at Oxford University or Nick Bostrum of the same place. Isiah Berlin, an atheist, has one of the best responses to religion in my view, although he at least had the respect not to tell believers in God that they were stupid, only that he was “tone deaf” to religion so there was no point in talking to him about it. And Alastair MacIntyre, a former Marxist, now Catholic, and one of the best moral philosophers alive today, along with Charles Taylor, another Catholic and moral philosopher. Both have fine intellects. Anyway, there are some excellent arguments for and against God. This is my last word as I’m a bit caught up with chores and I thought your response deserved an answer.
".....particularly Western Judaism, Islam and Christianity"!!
0:16 because they didn’t read thiest arguments for God....
They might have their own Jesus or Buddha
Why would aliens need Jesus when they can imagine Superman.
Superman is way stronger and better adjusted to physics of our world, his magical abilities makes him a clear evolutionary champion. But religion and spiritualism didn't focus on evolution or genes quality, theology was more interested in human condition in general. And they didn't figure our evolution, of course. It was like, Superman must also pee and poop, his super farts must be awful, so he aint any better than the rest of us. Sure hope we'll meet with polite aliens, who mind their manners and regularly wash their tentacles.
