History is written by the “victors” as they say, telling half-truths or out and out lies to make them look better or the “losing” culture/class look worse. And, as you said, it’s the everyday person who makes up history not just the ruling class who tend to fear when people come together from all backgrounds to work together because we may disrupt the status quo. Very enjoyable review!!👏🏼

Just finished to read this book a couple of months ago and I am still overwhelmed by the large amount of stories and information that most of common people didn't know. I think that visiting places like Samarkand after reading "The Silk Roads" makes our origin and our society origin more clear, it doesn't matter if we are European, American or what so ever, the orient has made a huge influence in our way of living and the goods we are using. Very fascinating reading. I hope I will be able to visit Uzbekistan soon. Keep on with this content this year. Great idea! Cheers from Sicily

Just bought it. My family is originally from Somalia and it's amazing how much of its history has been lost. I've always known that with its prime location, that it has played a HUGE role in history. I cant wait to read up and learn more about the silk road. I hope life is treating you and your loved ones well Marko. 🌻
Happy travels and happy (late) new year!

Great book choice this month, I really like how you've incorporated your choice of the Silk Roads with your current travel segment on Uzbekistan.
I've previously read this book and thought you did a really thorough job summarizing. I found it was difficult at first to set aside my preconceived notions of the history of how the west and east interacted after being educated in Toronto. This book really opened up my mind to challenge the assumptions I had created and recalibrated my thoughts on globalization and the larger historical question of 'what is truth?.' The amount of detail that was incorporated into this book was fascinating and insightful, and while it was quite long, I thought it was a great read.
A side note, have you ever thought about narrating books yourself? It's quite hard to find someone who's able to speak about deep subject matters and follow along as easily as it is in your videos.

Marko, I have this book in hardcover and it's in Polish. I show the world from a different perspective. Atlantic Europe was a poorer part of the "European Peninsula" until the Mongol invasion and great discoveries in the XV and XVI century. The Chinese are trying to revive the "Silk Road" to become a superpower again. Maritime transport is the most efficient for now, but new inventions like hyperloop can change that. I didn't know you liked books so much. I discovered this channel today. I subscribed to Vagabrothers two years ago.
I know you are going to my country this year so I can recommend another book. Norman Davies, 1981: God's Playground: A History of Poland. Vol. 1: The Origins to 1795, Vol. 2: 1795 to the Present. Oxford: Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-925339-0 / ISBN 0-19-925340-4
People often go only to Kraków, Gdańsk and Warsaw without knowing about such architectural gems as Zamość, Toruń, and the castle in Malbork.
BTW I'm a historian and travel a lot.

The numerals that we in the West and the World, use daily are derived from the Arab world. Also, there has always been a condescension regarding the East. One has only to think of the aftermath of World War I, when Churchill, and I think Lawrence of Arabia, and a women (who I'm not familiar with, I think her name was Bell (?),) without consulting with Eastern leaders, divided the Ottoman Empire into the countries we now know today as Iran and Iraq. History is not my forte, so I may have some of this into incorrect, but you get the gist.

This book sounds like sweet music to the history nerd that I am ! Will definitely give it a read or a listen on audible. Like you said, I find that listening to books sometimes makes them easier to “digest”. If you are interested in filling the gaps of history as taught in school I would highly recommend “No god but God: the origins, evolution and future of Islam” by Reza Aslan. Also, I read Shantaram last November based on your recommendation and absolutely loved it! I’m really looking forward to future book club videos :)

Very interesting video. It really made me eager to give the silk roads a read. Interestingly enough the word "alcohol" also comes from arabic even though it's now banned in some muslim countries. In France they do actually teach us a tiny bit about the impacts of arabic scholars on contemporary science maybe because of the closeness of Europe with that part of the world or because of the large number of arabic immigrants in France. However, I do think that unfortunately the key role that they have played like keeping the Ancient greek knowledge and transcribing it is often downplayed in western history.

Well reviewed! You describing how involved you got in order to really really read the book makes me feel better about deciding to abandon it 10% in. I am just NOT ready to get involved enough for the book to make sense. Currently I am not remembering ANYTHING I hear in my Audible version of the book. I was expecting something different from it, something easier to digest on its own, that would explain things systematically and use historic examples as proof of bigger concepts like guns germs and steel did, not as the end all in themselves.

When I started to learn Arabic, I was surprised to find out how many arabic loanwords there are in so many other languages. I really got interested in the history of how these words made their way to Europe. This book is on my to-be-read-list for a long time now, but I am kind of intimidated by the amount of pages this book has, so maybe I'll try to listen to the audiobook aswell. ;)

Hola Markos. Vi tu nuevo post del libro Silk Roads (loved the video) but I’m not inspire to read it. Y cómo funciona the book club ? You just give a review on YT and that’s it or you have a point in which everyone converge and talks about it ? It would be a great incentive if by the end of the month you commit to a Live Stream on YT to discuss the book, may be that will
Motivate more people to read it. But I’m happy to see that you are committed to your book club.

But Persians were not Muslims. It was the land of Zoroastrians until the Islamic conquests. Many Persians fled to India to escape Islamist persecution and preserve their ancient Zoroastrian roots. These people have been living in India for a millenia now and are known as Parsis (Indian Persians) who are all Zoroastrians with their own fire temples across India and have contributed significantly to the Indian economy and warfare. Many have even enlisted in the army and had contributed to Indian independence. One of the most notorious riots against the British was carried out by Parsis which became known as the infamous dog riot.
