  • D.I.Y. Project - NOT TRAINED TO DO THIS TYPE OF WORK BEFORE - JUST PREVIOUS BASIC EXPERIENCE IN DIY
    SELF TAUGHT USE OF SAWS AND TOOLS. UA-cam was very helpful in certain areas but thought I needed to do a complete breakdown of the ceiling build from timber rafters to upvc soffits and trims.
    “A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN MUST BE USED FOR WIRING AND SWITCHES”
    Most lengths of timber were 5m lengths for both roof & spotlights panels ( be sure to purchase treated blue timber battens lengths.
    All lengths of upvc cladding were 5m lengths 10mm thickness x 30cm width.
    Screws used for all roof timber battens are displayed in video Easy drive (4.8 x 50mm)
    Screws used for cladding were SPAX Wirox T-STAR Plus Screw 3.5 x 25mm (much much easier to use then standard pozi screws.
    IMPORTANTANT - When screwing batten's over insulation, " MAKE SURE YOU PUT PRESSURE ON THE BATON BECAUSE THE INSULATION WILL GATTHER AROUND DRILL BITS AND SCREWS. I was advised by YBS INSULATION to use the Easy Drive screws as in video.
    I insulated and cladded it for approximately £200 for insulation, £200 for cladding and Joints screws were approximately £30-£40.
    £100 for timber
    REMEMBER TOOLS COST EXTRA CASH, LUCKILY I ALREADY HAD ACCUMULATED A SELECTION OVER THE YEARS
    But materials were approximately £500, Spotlights were about £100

    Such a great project to plan and then do. Terrific job! I have an identical conservatory which has had almost identical PVC cladding added some years back but which has water ingress issues. Your video is particularly helpful to me in clarifying how mine is most likely put together. Good job guys. 🙂

    Outstanding job. You must be well pleased with that. Our conservatory is the same size although victorian style and we want to do the pelmet lights so this will be a great guide for me. I am under instruction to get it done before the colder weather comes in so I best get cracking!

      That's what I'm looking to do with mine as well. However, I'm thinking of changing it slightly and using a cill board on the soffit about 20mm deeper than needed to place led strip lighting in as well. If I have them switched seperately from the downlights it should give an uplighting effect.

    Hi, You have a lovely video. Such a nice work, am well impressed with your finish. I am putting the soffits board together and it is really difficult trying to use the H trim to join them together and I am at a situation where the H trims are very tight for me to join the soffits board and it’s becoming very difficult. I watched your video and realised you used a different type of trim to hide the joints.
    Please what joints trims and type of screws did you use.?

      Make sure you do pilot holes through wooden buttons and also slightly countersink. I used no more nails on batons. I also made sure I put glue around each pilot hole. Takes a fraction longer but it worked.

    • @vksbirmingham4312
      @vksbirmingham4312  3 роки тому +2

      Make sure all batons have pilot holes same size as screws. Then while holding baton on white roof rafter, pilot drill 1 hole to the white rafter through the pre drilled baton. Make sure the baton has no more nails on. Next drill a screw in this should hold. Then pilot drill through remaining baton and screw to rafter. HOPE THIS HELPS

      Start on bottom row by first screwed in J-Trim. I then cut lip off with fine cut saw, because the lip is about 1cm. Need to do this as board won’t sit in trim securely. After all trimming attached the just push boards int place then finally screw edge of cladding from inside edge nearest to Batons with 2ft spacing. I used 30 x 25 Torx screws (eBay)

      No nothing and 6 months gone, touch wood hasn’t leaked, so I think it has worked well. You will not get condensation if you seal all insulation using the foil tape. I used wickes foil tape but make sure you use the wider one that wickes sell.

      In winter months when outside temp was 0-5 degrees, it’s not as cold as before at degrees inside was 9 degrees but just to let you know we have a tiles porcelain floor which is freezing, other floors won’t be as cold as these. Got a rad in the conservatory 15 degrees 8am this morning. We have completely covered floor with rugs plus we have 16 windows in conservator that 3 sides completely glass so that doesn’t help either, and 3 dwarf wall and double french door. We use a fan heater for about 5 mins which brings temp up to about 21 degrees it only takes 5-7 mins and the room is very comfortable.

      Sorry for delay. I used lengths of 1” by 5metres, then cut them down to size. If possible make sure you used double sided tape because the lengths do not alway stick flush to soffit. ( DOUBLE SIDED TAPE)

      I would use suitable length but Torx Screws are a little more expensive but never ever slip out of bit or screwdriver. I only use Torx screws, so you have a choice. (Basically you want the screw to be able pass 1 baton and the insulation, but ) Remember the 1st baton will already be attached to the conservatory ceiling, hope that helps

      I used a bathroom soffit tongue and groove type, its thinner about 6-7mm thick. I purchased it from STAX for about £30 about 6 lengths.The Chrome edging I purchased 3 x 2m lenghs about £5 each. Took a while to get in position as it was extremely tight which resulted in absolute minimum gap between the 10mm white soffit and flat ceiling soffit, so you have a little to play with. The flat ceiling soffit is very neat cant really see the joint and basically looks very tidy. You will need a thin plastic ruler type thing to help get the soffit into the chrome edging. Hope this helps.

    When drilling screws in the first lot of batons does the screw go into the metal

    • @vksbirmingham4312
      @vksbirmingham4312  3 роки тому

      Make sure you slightly off centre. Pre drill baton, this will mark the baton. I then drilled pilot hole through already drilled baton, then screw with self tapping screw. This will secure baton, then continue with rest of baton. Look on UA-cam conservatory roof this should give you an idea of how the roof panels sit on aluminium roof... I was in same situation as you , worried how baton will secure to metal. I was that scared I removed the top panel from out side to check if screws went through the upvc sheets. Each roof sheet sits on an aluminium cross beam. You must check if you are not sure

      You could remove an end caps from outside of conservatory roof to see aluminium structure of roof, this will give you an idea of what the aluminium depth and layout is.

      @@vksbirmingham4312 You have done an amazing job, the soffit board finish looks top notch! Hat's off to both father and son :) I would like to do something similar but I have been very concerned about how to correctly screw the batons into the uPVC coated aluminium rails without causing any compromise to the underlying aluminium structure. My conservatory is about 20 years old. I have a couple of questions. Hope you will be kind to reply.
      1. What is the thickness of the batons you used, did you use bare wood for mounting to the uPVC and use treated blue batons to hold the quilt?
      2. You mention above screw the batons into the uPVC slightly off centre. How deep does the 50mm screw go into the aluminium?
      3. I have two sheets that have not been properly squared when first fitted and during heavy rains, there is a drip. To prepare for winter, yesterday I went and got CT1 Sealant And Construction Adhesive to seal what is quite a big gap. Do you think this could become a problem later or if you know of another solution before I embark on the project.

      @@MP-mu1kw batons available from Selco. They are a standard baton treated blue(5M lengths. ( only one size available from selco. I pre- drilled baton in 3 point . I also counter-sunk the wood and used no more nails. Poisoned glued baton on metal part of roof. Pre drilled through Baton hole with a pilot hole then drilled using self tapping screw until screw has gone In hand tight (Do not over tighten). Then continue with remaining. Just tighten all 3 screws. I used my impact drill on lowest setting, untill the 1st ratchet click then just tightens with hand. TOUCH-WOOD, my roof is still serving it’s purpose, no leaks at all. Not sure about you issue with your current leak…..sorry
      I-Also suggest using only the blue batons for all. It’s treated so will be better for condensation

If you plan to do this just think if you installing vertical blinds then you may want to go wide or move spots out instead of in centre but to the edge....
