I have not been dating all that much, but I just want to say that it's so important to communicate to your date what your aiming for. Do you want a serious relationship, or just fool around and be single? Do you need a lot time to make up your mind? Or do you want to be serious and exclusive with that person pretty early on? My date asked me after our second date if I was willing to just focus on him and I, and be exclusive with him from now on, and since I fellt the same I was happy he put it that way. It showed me he was serious about getting to know me. Just tell people you date how you feel and don't let people be in limbo, Communication makes a win-win situation.
I live in the US and people are the same in all countries. You're right, communication is important for any relationship. You are a very pretty woman. Why are you not dating anymore? Are you still in an exclusive relationship with that guy?

Yes, it was extremely distracting. Several times I wanted to stop watching simply because the excessive use of 'like' was so very annoying. I'm Australian and it's not a normal thing for Australians.

Generally you will become boyfriend and girlfriend earlier than the timeframe they are talking about. But it is age dependent mostly. The more older you are the faster you go to a relationship status. But we definitely do not use labels as much as in other countries I guess. But it does not mean that you do not have a relationships commitment.
Yeah, I'd say age matter a lot.
In my 20s I dated a girl of similar age and we didn't call ourselves girlfriend and boyfriend until we'd been dating for like 4 months and were practically living together.
A few years later I dated a girl that was almost 40 and like 3 weeks in she was calling me "her man" and I made a joke that kinda ended in "So you're my girlfriend now?" and she, very seriously, answered "of course I am your girlfriend."
It absolutely depends on the person but I think age plays a big part too.

I'm Swedish (30 years old) and now have a girlfriend that i first met the 14th of march last year and we became boyfriend/girlfriend the 19th of april the same year so it went very fast in my opinion but we just clicked and could talk about everything but with that said i think in general and myself included people in sweden want to know you for real before becoming a couple. Think for yourself, almost everything is perfect in the begining but thats because it's all new but if your dating for a bit longer you get to see more sides of the person your dating and also have more time thinking and reflecting about the person and if you can see yourself living and spending your days with that person 😉👍
I feel like the whole "dating" thing has been imported from America (again) when Tinder and similar apps came around. Nowadays, a lot of women expect to be dating just for the sake of it and for it's pop-culture value. I feel like it also plays a role in the whole game of "play hard to get", when they say they are dating it also means that if they find another then there is no breakup involved since it was just "dating". At least that's how I feel.
Before it was just like the guy says it's in Australia and I prefer that way a lot more myself.

bro dont. You live in the best country high salaries, good weather, good nature AND the winters in sweden it gets dark at like 3 oclock in the afternoon for like 6 months so that part of the year i rarley meet people outside of the weekend if even that. The winters are horrible

A lot must have changed since I met my husband 19 years ago. We went on a date and were exclusive like three days later.
I don’t think it’s that common here to date for a year before you become a couple. Me and my partner dated for like 3 months and then we became boyfriend and girlfriend. It’s been the same with most of my friends. Honestly, if I dated someone for a year without trying to make it official, I probably wasn’t that into that person.
Girls who date for a year before getting into a relationship must be like 1/200. That's totally unheard of.

I'm an Aussie that's lived in Sweden and this....really needs a TLDR version. Not sure if this is an Aussie phrase, but this guy tends to waffle (i.e. prater for mycket!). Every one of the areas you cover here are quite different depending on where you live (city vs regionally), your age, your scene.....same as if you were comparing dating, live hobbies of someone n Stockholm vs Are vs Malmo. Sorry Stefan, I really wanted to like this....men kanske det finns en annan Australiensk person du kan pratar med och far en realistisk perspectiv av livet dar!? Forlot Adrian :P

Nice topics on comparing the cultures. But be aware of the word ‘LIKE’ as it makes it harder to listen to the conversation.
Dating didnt even exist here one generation ago. That was a consept we saw in the movies and didnt get. When I was a upper teen ( 1990-93) you didnt ask anyone out on a date I think. Either you got to know someone as a friend and then if you developed romantic feelings you asked to be BF/GF and then started to hang more like that. Or if you started with feelings you would start with making out and spending the night and after that you were ”together” and in a relationship until someone breaks it up.
No days I really dont know how it works... But people seemes to date like in the USA 😌. Im still with the first boy I asked to stay the night in 1994 so.....😂

I think the time frame for when you become GF/BF varies a lot between different people. Might also differ a lot depending on where in the county you are.
British people always want to emigrate to Australia as the work-life balance is supposed to be better. Another big factor is that British people want to be able to go outside after work, whereas in Britain it is dark and cold by then. But then a lot of them live far away from their workplace, so once one has commuted, there is no energy.

I think being in a big city like Stockholm makes a difference in how people date.
As I see it, when you go on enough dates to the point where the date generally ends in sex, it's often considered pretty scummy to sleep around.
You may not call yourselves Girlfriend and Boyfriend yet, but sleeping around while trying to build a serious relationship with someone is still frowned upon in Sweden.
I think in general Swedes are more open and communicative about what we want out of a relationship. We don't have expect a serious relationship without stating that's what we want.
Hi Stefan. Nice video. In the 70s, the Swedish government set out as a goal that all adults should be able to live in a singel household if they want to. Especially single mums. They achieved that. So that can explain why Swedish women are strong and independent and not afraid of sleeping around if they want to without being ashamed of it. That's why we lead the statistics in the world when it comes to single households and why we marry that late. That's my theory anyway.
I have NEVER knocked on the door of someone else's party expecting to be invited in. If I'm throwing a party my biggest fear is that happening to me 😂
In Sweden, we're very productive while we work, and if there's nothing to do, it's more acceptable to be relaxed.
When I was in America I saw a lot of people half-arsing their work, like talking on the phone while working and stuff, but people were ok with it because they were working even if it was very slowly.
Here in Sweden we'd be more ok with people taking a 2min break to not distract you while you work, but I've heard of people getting yelled at for just stepping away for a minute in America.
It seems the bosses in America would rather you work at 50% efficiency with no breaks all day, than a few breaks and 100% efficiency.
Basically it seems actively working matters more than the amount of work that gets done...
I would say that 3-4 months is the perfect time to wait until you put a label on the relationship... if a guy waits longer than that, I would start to wonder if he’s actually in to me. So don’t wait too long guys! And do small gestures and see how she reacts, maybe you can invite her to dinner with your friends and if she says yes she’s in to you! /A swede
I think the dating thing is all bc of tinder. Before tinder I never heard about people dating several at once (if they did it counted as cheating), but now it's almost a given. HOWEVER, if you want to avoid this you can become friendly with someone outside if dating apps and then start dating them. If you already have a connection when you start dating they shouldn't be dating others at the same time. That is how i avoid being non-exclusive
I'm now in my sixties, but in the 80's I had the opportunity to travel (as a "junior") in business. To my amazement, out of UK, USA and NZ, it was the Kiwis that I felt most comfortable with, and quite a few times they confirmed that they got along very well with Swedes. I do miss Aotearoa...

I disagree with the dating life. Me and almost all my friends have met someone, seen each other for 2-3 times and then we’re a couple. I’ve never been on an actual date 🙈
And we always share alcohol on parties and are very open to new people joining in

I work more efficiently when I'm focused on work, and can go about my work in an efficient way. Working in Sweden/Denmark, I was shut down for not wanting to "socialise" during my lunch-break in Denmark, whereas it's perfectly acceptable in Sweden.
Btw, when I have a fresh coating of new, fresh, snow. I'm super NOT Swedish, since I love dancing barefoot. And in heavy rain - barefoot (but I deny myself the pleasure, because I respect the fact that nobody wants to see me splashing and dancing around in the rain, nor dancing with the wind), I try to limit my expression of happiness.

Something you maybe don't see as a hobby, but Swedes and Scandinavians travel the most in the world. Not exactly now (Covid) but normally.
They way he keeps saying "sleeping around" really sounds judgmental.
Personally I don't recognise AT ALL this notion of sleeping with different people simultaneously. Noone I know does that. Whether you label it or not, there's usually one romantic interest at a time. But then I don't live in Stockholm.
Whenever anything is debated, defining the terms is vital. What do you think being together implies? When you say "commitment" what does that mean to you? Why is 'having a girl to yourself' what counts?
What counts the most is the quality of the time you spend together, and the courting phase is often the sweetest. From experience, guys (at least here) tend to consider it "job done" as soon as the relationship is labelled.

In religious groups, some people marry early, so that they -can- have that physical relationship.
The enterprenourship - it's easier to try something out, when you know that your life isn't finished just because you failed. You still have healthcare no matter what. You can get unemployment support. And in a lot of cases you can just go back to your latest employer (yes, you can get leave of absence from work to try something out, if you are not becoming competitor to your old employer). The security gives you the opportunity to be brave.
Swedes being "shy". If you bother (yes bother) people on the street, it's not necessarily them being introvert that gets in your way. Swedes live by their schedules. So most probably someone is busy going somewhere, getting something done, so that then they can meet their friends for fika or do something else that is scheduled. And you are intervening with it. A Swede will see straight away if someone is busy or approachable by their body language (that is before they bother that person). I won't even approach a close friend when they look busy, I'll just wave or nod and then we continue on our marry way.
Personal booze - it's an age thing. At my age, yes we do bring our booze, but it's usually shared with others, and the host tends to have something. So it turns more into a potluck than "just my own". If yo go to a "dinner party", then the rules are similar to everywhere else. You bring a bottle of wine to the host, so that they can share it with others during the dinner.
@Stefan Thyron Those amounts of introverts you spoke about are the reason why Stockholm is a rocket for creating companies. They're thinking about alot of other things when you interrupt their thought process. Alot of Swedes like to reflect. I would say the culture and the climate is why so many Nordic people are introverts and they usually become quite smart. Also when they grow older they're less shy.
Guess it depends where in Australia you’re from.
I don’t know anyone who would get married so young and approaching people isn’t common here either.

I find that people in big cities aren't as open to talking to strangers as town folk or village people.
In the country side you'll notice everyone saying "Hey" and "Good Day" to you and asking you where you're going and stuff, but just saying "Hey" to some random person in the street in Stockholm you get this crazy death stare like "The F you want?!"
Longest time I ever dated was for 3 weeks :) lived in the US for about a year and thought the dating scene was a lot slower in the US compared to Sweden. Maybe it's different now :)
You should see Norway. They get even more days off work. We are considered to be folks with very high work ethics over there.

Oh my god! I'm a swedish woman of 58 and what you are describing about swedish dating life seems horrible for me. When I was young/younger ut wasn't like that. Yeah you could have one night stands but if you saw someone for a couple of weeks most of the time that person became your boyfriend. Or you decided something else. NOT seeing someone for 6 months that might/might not become your boyfriend.
What he was describing is still very rare. I think their opinions are heavily influenced by their social circles since they live in Stockholm and at least Adrian seems to hang around with mostly ‘party people’. As a young person, dating for a year without becoming exclusive pretty much does not happen, and I believe doing so for six months is still somewhat rare.
I don't know what kind of girls you've dated but none of my friends are behaving the way you're describing in the video. Maybe you attract this behaviour and it says more about you than swedish girls in general?

We don't use the word 'dating' in Australia. We 'go out' with someone. And I really don't understand why you would bother continuing to see someone romantically/sexually overa long period of time unless you are really interested. Total waste of energy & time, unless you just like to use other folk superficially.
