    Can we see a discussion of how this manages a decent trigger whilst most bullpups are a bit mediocre? Maybe a discussion of bullpup triggers generally and why some are good and some are mushy and awful? I get that the issue is linkage between trigger and bolt/sear causing mush but it'd be amazing to see a few side by side so we can see why the good ones are good and the bad ones bad.

    • @chemistrykrang8065
      @chemistrykrang8065 2 роки тому +28

      @@calvingreene90 yes absolutely. I understand the reason for mushy/gritty bullpup triggers but it'd be really good to see several trigger mechanisms for them dismantled side by side along with a discussion of how they feel so we can see what differences lead to what trigger feel.

    • @RaphYkun
      @RaphYkun 2 роки тому +14

      @@calvingreene90 Gotta wonder why most designs don't have the sear near the trigger. Either a packaging issue (as there's now a barrel in that area) or a mechanical one. I wonder if translating the "mushiness" after the sear results in a mushy primer strike or sear engagement. I'd take reliable mushiness over unreliably crisp.

    • @nextlifeonearth
      @nextlifeonearth 2 роки тому +14

      Simply avoiding plastic parts puts you far ahead of what initially gave bullpop triggers a bad name: the Steyr AUG.
      Then pulling bar instead of a pushing bar also improves the trigger a lot.

    • @chemistrykrang8065
      @chemistrykrang8065 2 роки тому +1

      @@RaphYkun I suspect there could be an issue with a system where (for example) a striker had a long extension coming forward to engage with a trigger mechanism in front of the bolt. There's the potential for more friction in that slowing down the striker and resulting in light strikes... but there are definitely ways to do a "sear near trigger" bullpup system without this sort of nonsense. That's why I'd like to see what solutions have been tried and what worked.

    • @khoatran9482

      The RFB has existed since 2009 and has an excellent trigger. Crisp, no mush, no creep, 5lb pull (hunter version). Not all bullpups have crap triggers.

    I would be really interested to see 9 Hole Reviews put this through it's paces. That was some great shooting from both Karl and the rifle.
    It's also nice to be reminded that Karl isn't dogmatic in his views. This particular bullpup is fantastic, so he sings its praises. That's why I love this channel.

    Bullpup triggers are such an obvious niche for the Remington electrical primer system... Got an electrical match trigger sitting on the bench, it's very nice and totally tunable. Wish someone would get the idea and try this-

    • @e2rqey
      @e2rqey 2 роки тому +4

      Damn, that really is a pretty good idea. I mean theoretically you could have a system with a firing pin that's just electrically released somehow and then just have the trigger itself wired up to the mechanism.
      That being said, from what I've heard, The SRS A2 already has pretty much the best trigger in a bullpup.

    Impressive rifle. Impressive shooting. The circling hawk adds to the drama. The compressed length of the bull pup configuration really adds to the deployability of that rifle. I’m interested in how they accomplish such an excellent trigger, usually a weakness of the bull pup design.

    Dirty little secret on (standard) bolt actions. If you shoot exclusively off bipods bags or support. Especially prone F class stuff single loading:
    Lefties are better off with RH actions. You can operate bolt, load and check chamber without breaking your cheek weld or firing grip (usually these have actual pistol grips or deep grips which mean you won’t hit your thumb with the bolt.
    To the point where a RH shooter might consider a LH action.

    • @cyrenecai

      I've noticed that with Ian when he shoots old bolt actions in FW videos, not taking your hand of the grip (and finger off the trigger) seems to allow one to fire faster, even when not supported.

      i can confirm as a wrong-handed shooter. i borrowed my friend's kar98k for a few shots at a 100m range. i'm a speed shooter, he's a precision shooter. 10 rounds on target, 4moa dispersion in less than 30 seconds was my personal best once i got used to the unfamiliar ergonomics. him being right handed, he routinely gets 2moa groups at 100m in about 4x the time, but as usual i'm going for speed not accuracy. the fact that this gun was made in 1942 and is still a laser pointer 80 years later is just a testament to the speed advantage of shooting a bolt-gun wrong-handed.
      this was done with only iron-sights adjusted to the minimum possible range (150m iirc, i don't recall german war-sights off the top of my head), and confirmed multiple times by testing on the clock and with discussions with range officers. once you shoot off the shoulder, the advantage becomes a boat anchor of a handicap however.

      It can be pretty helpful if you plan on using (hunting/other) in .300 WM or .338 LM but ranges near you won't let you use anything that large. In my case I can get 5.56 for $.25/rd and get a LOT of trigger time in-between using the bigger stuff. Now I just need to get the rifle... But I can attest to the MDRX being pretty awesome (although a bit heavy).

    Desert Tech is honestly the manufacturer that you wish other manufacturers could be more like. Their products are high quality, they work well, they offer a lot of flexibility for everyone, and they listen to customer feedback (the .308 MDR as tested by InRange is an excellent example of this). Personally, I like that they sell platforms as much as firearms, allowing you to quickly and easily adapt your rifle to your circumstances; like Karl said, this is generally of dubious utility, but different cartridges do perform better in different circumstances, so that flexibility is nice to have (I also especially like how, for example, their different conversion kits are specifically marked "For all MDR and MDRX rifles", meaning that if you want to convert your 5.56 MDR with an 11.5" barrel into a 6.5 MDR with a 20" barrel, you can do it with only a few minutes of work; something even the ultra-modular Armalite pattern cannot claim).
    The only downside is how expensive the rifles are, but quality doesn't come cheap.

    Karl, they're even more versatile than 6.5C to 300W. Aftermarket companies make 223 sized bolts/mags and also it can handle the 338L. For my A1 Covert I have a 16" 308 barrel for practicality, a longer 338L barrel and bolt for reaching way out, and a 510 Whisper barrel for silliness (lobbing 750 grain Amaxes out to 500yds suppressed). It also takes some of the still out of buying a top shelf scope when you can use it in so many ways.

    I love that it just looks like a Call of Duty customized pistol

    A lot of firearms usage here in Oz is at night from vehicles doing pest control in paddocks. If they were legal and in 223, a bullpup bolt action with a good trigger would be a fantastic rifle for that. Using long bolt actions in cars is a pain especially when hunting in a group. Something like this would be damn near revolutionary, and I wouldn't be surprised if many Aussie shooters would want one just as much as they'd want a semi auto.

      Are you in NSW where these things are considered scary? I own this exact model, in 308, in QLD

      @@thomasa5619 WA hence Perth in the name. Our system over here is about as bad as NSW. But good on you Queenslanders. I wouldn't have thought they were legal over there or else I would have thought there'd be plenty of UA-cam videos from qld shooters I follow. (Maybe I just missed them). Give me this rifle in a 223 for the wheatbelt and a 22mag for Perth outskirts and Id be a very happy boy. Almost as happy as if I could have an ar15

      @@bushcraftingmuslim You can have them in WA. WAPOL tried to reclassify them, but an owner took them to court and won last year.

      @@Joric78 I stand corrected! That's awesome. If they could come in 223 that's be awesome but I doubt the US market would be viable for that. Maybe one day I'll upgrade my Howa funds permitting. (223 would just be the ducks nuts for myself though)

      @@bushcraftingmuslim That was for a rifle he already owned mind you. From my understanding of the way things work in WA, if you want one you'd better check they'll actually provide the permit to acquire. They play a similar game with anything in "scary sniper calibres" here in SA ("it's not legally restricted, we just won't let you get one").

    Karl when you are done with that rifle, you can just send it to me...I will even pay for shipping ;) I to would like to know more about how Desert Tech managed a nice short crisp trigger on a bullpup.

    Visually this reminds me a lot of the DSR-1 rifle. That's practically unobtanium though, one sold at RIA for over 15k.
