  • Hello everyone. This week on ‘My Wife Hasn’t Seen’ we watch a quirky little cult classic. This movie was good overall and gave us some surprises. We had some good laughs with this one. Come join us on the couch and let’s watch. Enjoy!
Sorry about the audio. You need to turn it way up. I found out later that my windows 10 mic setting was at 40. I fixed it for the next video(its turned to 89 now!).

My all time favourite movie! I was the only one of my friend group who liked it when it came out in the early 80’s and I’ve loved it even more as I’ve aged and looked at it deeper.

I was not allowed to see it when it came out(too young). I saw it in the late 80s on HBO at a friends house. I enjoyed it but I didn’t remember the end. Now I know why, must’ve blocked it from my mind. Thanks for checking us out.

My favorite film of all time, from a book I adore, it’s simply perfect to me. A perfect film. Despite it coming out when I was around 5 years old, and not seeing it till I was in my 20’s, it remains timeless and a true classic. The writing superb, the performances exquisite (Glenn Close in her first role, and the late great Robin Williams in a career defining performance that’s sadly overlooked today), the settings both sweeping and urban, it’s a virtual time capsule of the decades it represents. A time long gone now. Yet this film remains eternal.
For me, this film is so criminally underrated and spectacularly unique and brilliant, yet remains largely unknown today, when it deserves way, WAY, more attention. Thank you for reacting to it.

Many years ago I bought this movie on video - I think it was the first one I ever bought. There weren't even many home videos back then so I had to pay something like $80 to buy it from a video store. Then I bought the book and discovered there was even more of the story to tell. Another John Irving classic.

LOVE that you did this film ... it IS a winner! The need for a happy ending is lazy. Or even a compleate one. This film and its ending is as complex as life. As funny and sad and bloated and beautiful as life. This film was Robin's film before Dead Poets Society... I've always said his win of actor oscar for DPS was because he was ignored for his amazing performance in this film .
I suggest watching The Hotel New Hampshire , another great film adaptation of a book by the same author. Another great cast (rob Lowe leads), lovely early 80s production and another deep, ordinary, complex, confusing story
Thank you for doing this film, I believe that this is the only reaction to this on YT. Gratz!

Thanks for the kind words. There was a little video store we passed every day coming home in the early 80s. They would put up movie posters for new releases in the window. This poster was up for a month or two and it fascinated me. An airplane in a house and robin williams. I was too young to see it then but this memory sticks with me. I saw it in the late 80s on HBO and loved it.
I agree that it doesn’t have to have this happy ending and will try to catch The Hotel New Hampshire.

It's wonderful to know there are still people in the world who appreciate a truly good piece of art! I'm so sick of cookie cutter books and movies and am always grateful when something of this quality makes it to film. I'm afraid kids of today don't even know there are things out there with depth and flavor that don't have a super hero in them!

@@edandcyndireact5835 Rambo is a good movie in its own way. Not quite as rich with characters not nearly as developed as GARP, but Sylvester Stallone's final speech in that movie is something else and should have earned him much more acting credit than it did.
I think you're the only dark reaction on UA-cam. There are lots of reactors that would like it but I feel as though their audience wouldn't, as you've discovered.

  • @msdarby515

One of the best movies, ever, and Robin Williams is perfect as Garp. He was an incredible actor whose comedic genius just happened to shine a bit brighter.
This is a novel written by John Irving and I think it was published in the mid-to-late 70s. Garp dies. It's a heartbreaker.
I read this book when I was fairly young, right after the movie came out. I was still in high school and a lot of it was lost on me to be honest.
In college I took a literary analysis class, and learned a lot. If you look for the main themes things make more sense. It doesn't mean it all comes together or suddenly you have a lightbulb popping on over your head but it does help you understand things a little better.
Two main themes are sexual violence and intolerance. Nearly all the other themes fit within these categories.
For example, Jenny is constantly harping on about sexual morality, yet she conceived Garp in what is a morally questionable act, essentially raping a man in a coma.
Garp loves his children fiercely and is overprotective, yet he's the one who hurts them.
Jenny is killed by a woman-hating man, Garp is killed by a man-hating woman.
Irving also challenges our assumptions about sex related roles. Jenny, a woman, is rather cold and distant. Roberta on the other hand is warm and nurturing. We see a similar but less obvious role reversal between Garp and Helen.
Anyway, maybe share this with the missus so perhaps she will have a little closure.
The book is a great read. It was on the best sellers list for years. It has a lengthy epilogue telling you what happened to every single character. So if you want to know what became of Helen, Pooh or Roberta, go to the book!
    Enjoyed the reaction!

@@edandcyndireact5835 Hi! Somehow I missed your responses to me. I'm so sorry it took a year.
I just came back here because I've been missing Garp and his friends and was looking through UA-cam to see if there's anything new. I actually watched your reaction, again, and enjoyed it, again. 😊
I'm so very pleased you found my analysis helpful. I do have to be honest and tell you that it was John Irving in an interview that pointed out that Garp was killed by a man-hating woman and Jenny was killed by a woman-hating man. I was fascinated by that when I read it, and surprised that hadn't been so obvious to me before.
I need to go dig my copy of the book out and revisit my old friends, but I also don't want to revisit the loss they are going to experience. Isn't it interesting how a book can reflect life in that it's hard, knowing the tragedy that is to come, because we all experience it, but we focus on the love and the joy between the tragedies to get us through it. I don't know if I can lose Walt again.
In the book Garp is ultra paranoid something is going to happen and we finally accept him as that worry-wart parent. And then the worst happens. 😭
Have you read the book? There's so much more in the book. 😊

I saw this movie as a kid and didn't like it because of the ending, then I saw it a few more times as I grew up and loved it more and more. Then I read the book the movie was based on and loved the book even more.
Garp did die at the end.
Pooh killed Garp because she always felt hostile towards him. She didn't like what he did with her sister...maybe she was curious, then maybe a little jealous, and that transformed into hatred.
She became an Ellen Jamesian because she really wanted somewhere to belong and she seemed to fit there. It was always more about that for her than feeling actual sympathy for Ellen James.
She also idolized Jenny Fields and identified a lot with what she wrote in her book. When she spotted Garp at her memorial service when no men were supposed to there infuriated her. That it was Garp who she had such a long history of animosity with...and he had also wrote the book about Ellen that attacked the Ellen James Society...whatever shreds of sanity she had left were gone and the idea of Garp...existing...she just couldn't allow any longer.
I also think of this movie as a kindred spirit to Forrest Gump. A lot of parallels between the two movies.
