I really like this 1982-ish period of Robin Williams. If you pay close attention to his answers and/or his input to the discussion, you can tell that he is shy and a bit uncomfortable. It's like he feels he needs to say something else to fill in the air but doesn't quite know what to say, so there's this "Oh, I guess he's done speaking" quality between the two. But I like how he actually carries on a conversation and only spinkles a little bit of his characters/impressions/sound effects within the conversation, which, I think, adds a wonderful color between him and his host. I could really picture someone wanting to hang out with him at a party or social event and finding him a unique person to engage with at that time. For me, though, this period ends very shorty after this year of his career, after which it's just him being this manic, hyperactive, obnoxious force in virtually every interview you come across. It's as if he's throwing everything at you at a hundred-miles-per-hour hoping something funny sticks, with a success rate of maybe really only 10% to 5%. I can't even watch him being interviewed during this long stretch of years, because I want to shout, "Would you sit down, please?! Jeezus! Relax!" To end on a postive note, in like the last two to three years of his life, due to him being older and with some of his health issues surfacing, he actually returns to that 1982-ish area, where he carries on a conversation with just little sprinkles of his characters/impressions/sound effects.
Rip To A Great Actor, Comedian Robin Williams, We Still Miss You Always
