It's so fascinating to see Joy Division's songs through the lens of New Order, precisely because they're (mostly) the same people, but a completely different band.
Not quite! He may have wrote the lyrics but I guarantee he didn't write all the music, when the people that wrote the music are the ones playing it, it's not a cover. That's like saying Pink Floyd are doing cover songs because Roger Waters left, or the multitude of other bands that have continued after band members leaving. Hell, Axle Rose even toured as Guns & Roses when he was the only member from the band left, and he wasn't even the main writer, are you going to say that he was doing covers as well? I think not!
Rogue Trooper Rogue Trooper New order is a Complete different band and it might be the original members of the band "Joy Division" but technically since they are doing the song as another band and not original Joy division it's a cover sure they wrote riffs and the melodies but it won't be complete without Ian it will forever be a cover the things in common with the support you gave was that the bands didn't split up members only left but Joy Division is gone the other bands found new members unlike joy division
It's okay that New order plays Joy Division songs, technically it's THEIR songs. Way I see it, when they play JD songs it's a tribute and keeping Ian's memory going. It's like when Weird Al plays Smells like Nirvana live he channels Kurt Kobain with his energy and it's like a tribute.
In the end they know they wouldn't be there if it hadn't been for Ian. But I think in the end they know its a tribute. You can see the emotion on their faces. Thankfully the group vocals tie it in pretty nicely in my opinon.
Es cover porque el tema está registrado a nombre de otra banda, técnicamente si es cover, realmente no lo es, porque son sus propios temas bajo otro nombre.
Actually nobody know better this song than New Order!! Also the vocalist have an impressive transformation on the voice near the end of the music . Legends !
"we would go on as if nothing were wrong...." Great lyric from this great song that summarizes the performance. Not the same without Ian. They should've had Hooky sing
Guitar, check, drums, check, bass, check .... guy who can actually play guitar quite well, check...and yet its still...its like watching Paul McCartney doing Beatles covers..
Love this song- Ian's voice had such a deeply haunting quality, this is great though. Their music still has the raw quality which I have always loved. Dance dance dance dance to the radio! :)
That was amazing! And heavy! To the people complaining that it didn't feature Ian Curtis on vocals..... DUH! What did you expect? haha. It was still great. Also, why the f**k does Bernard have a Confederate flag sticker on his guitar? LOL
I think it is for the same reason that there is a boy from the Hitler youth and a concentration camp on the cover and the insert for the first Joy Division release.
I have no clue, but maybe some punk thing? Or it’s just fits the guitar? But he’s not racist that’s for sure. He criticised Morrissey being racist in the interview. Also he hates Trump, meaning he’s not even supporting Republicans, why would he support Confederation.
Pero new order es claramente OTRA banda, no estan imitando a Joy... y si lo intentaran... les saldrìa bastante fiel, ya que ellos, como sabes, formaban parte de la banda.
I've often been frustrated by Morris' fills. It's obviously not a problem for him to keep time but he always does the fills in this song like he's driving over washboard roads. It's still great to see them perform it... but I can't be the only one who notices this, right??
Still think that Barney should have let Peter sing this as his voice has the depth and desperation that Ian had. Barney just sounds silly singing this. Great show otherwise ;)
I think they are in mood with Ian, and this is very sad and I think they play it a little aggressiv and emotional, but I understand that. My eyes are very wet, the water is not only in the clouds on this day. RIP Ian and Dance Dance Dance Dance Dance to the radio....
John frusciante sent me here with the statement that Bernard’s guitar playing was his influence on californication recording. I can definitely hear it!
I doubt if they knew what it meant. They probably thought it just meant "rebel." If they'd known it was so offensive, I don't think they'd have done it. They're definitely not racist and never were--they even played anti-racism benefit shows. They were the first group to like and bring American hip-hop to the UK and combine it with rock. After they learned what it meant, they probably thought, well no one who knows us would think we're racist.
New Order isn't Joy Division except for Ian Curtis. It's a different band with some of the former members of Joy Division AND Gillian Gilbert/Phill Cunningham/Tom Chapman. I don't have any problem with New Order or what songs they choose to perform, but it's not the same band as Joy Division.
What members do you suggest should play Joy division songs then if this is a different band? Ian is gone not by their choice, and I'm pretty sure they wrote the music so this is the band, with the exception of the other guy and Gillian.
Can’t anyone else see joy division had an ozzy era black sabbath meets u2 dance music sound ? Better than u2 though u2 first 3 albums were good though even though u2 ripped off from echo and the bunnymen just listen lol
Nit picking admittedly but, relatively speaking, this version is too busy/cluttered. The genius of the original Joy Division was that it was was lean and mean and the lead guitar cut through the mix like a knife.
People literally just put Ian Curtis comments on here for likes. That's really dumb because these are the people that wrote the music and Ian Curtis took himself out of the equation.
Honestly, the vocalist singing this song seems like he's not enjoying singing the song... It seems like he's singing as if he was forced to be there. very weak. Ian Curtis deserved more and better
Bernard just isn't an intense guy like Ian was...Funny New Order doesn't play Joy Division songs as well as some other cover versions when the members wrote the song...

For some reason Bernard Sumner reminds me Marty Mcfly.
hahah really
he looks really similar to michael j fox in this
You are absolutely right!
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
@@AndyWilliams8 Andy, I came here to say exactly that. LOL
Morris is a machine !
A human drum machine!
If only Ian Curtis was still here he would have blown the place apart. Awesome effort though, just needed Ian's moves and vibe.
Thumbs up
It gave me goosebumps when Sumner and Hook started singing "dance dance dance dance to the radio" it's like if I saw Ian singing with them 😳😳
same thing lmao
You DID see Ian singing with them, his spirit was there
It's so fascinating to see Joy Division's songs through the lens of New Order, precisely because they're (mostly) the same people, but a completely different band.
His voice is too high for this song, but this is very good anyways.
That scream at 3:10 is awesome, reminds me of Curtis somewhat
0:01 How is this a "cover"? These guys wrote the song...
yeah haha they were in joy division...
rhjlopez because The original Writer is dead.
BlackBeauty exactly, Ian Curtis wrote all the joy division songs
Not quite! He may have wrote the lyrics but I guarantee he didn't write all the music, when the people that wrote the music are the ones playing it, it's not a cover.

Wouldnt call those two tributes the same thing but yeah..
Fck weird al
I often wonder what they think when they play Joy Division songs without Ian Curtis. It must bring up mixed memories.
In the end they know they wouldn't be there if it hadn't been for Ian. But I think in the end they know its a tribute. You can see the emotion on their faces. Thankfully the group vocals tie it in pretty nicely in my opinon.

I was there in that raining evening with my mates from the German Order. What a great show!
I've long thought that Bernard Sumner is a totally underrated guitarist.
Peter Hook plays the bass so beautifully.
Peter Hook is one of the most underrated bass players of all time IMO
he's kinda like velvet underground for its time - not in the most known players, but an inspiration for so many newer players, sounds and bands
He isnt underrated

I have the vinyl of Closer signed by Peter Hook 🪝 of Joy Division/New Order. A true gentleman. He also sent me a New Order shirt 👕!
C. 18 - 10 - 23
Just think if they had asked Sam Riley to perform This song...
How Steve Morris never get tired of that 16th hi-hat, i will never know 😎
The pure energy in this performance is fcking brilliant!!
Love this song- Ian's voice had such a deeply haunting quality, this is great though. Their music still has the raw quality which I have always loved. Dance dance dance dance to the radio! :)
Top scream from Barney at 3:11
Cover? These guys made the song!
Wish peter did vocals for this, he sounded exactly like ian in the chorus
He does now x
This just reminds me that Ian's not there to sing it and almost make me want to cry.
We miss you, Ian... god bless JD fans and New Order
What a song boys, so sad you guys don't speak anymore 😢.. seen you all individually and ur gr8.. Thanx for all the tunes and memories.. love ya 👏👏

+danielscissorhands because Hook and Sumner are white supremacists, didnt you know ? their backup singer is their slave
I think it is for the same reason that there is a boy from the Hitler youth and a concentration camp on the cover and the insert for the first Joy Division release.
Well the world wasnt on this big PC kick in 2002 plus theyre British so why would they care anyways. Im happy to see the flag anywhere! So blah.

3:10 I wanna learn how to scream like that so badly!!!
Being "kevin" bro, u should can do that if ur "kevin"
Ian Curtis would’ve evolved so much if he would have hung on. Peter Hook kinda sounds like Ian at times. So much energy here. Cheers New Order!
"Joy Division cover"??? Have a word! Its New Order doing a song they wrote as Joy Division!!
just becoz ian curtis created these songs doesnt take away the awesomeness of this performance
Sthat a bad thing
The four of them created the songs.....
bro they’re literally from england and sing post punk they ain’t got one song where he need a confederate flag on his guitar 💀
I love the energy of the band ... rip ian
joy division no es igual a new order..ian curtis le daba otro espiritu a la banda :D
exacto, joy division era mas oscuro

It, raining too Day MTB shafer 😢😂

New Order is Joy Division' Joy Division is New Order
The other guitarist shouldn't even play on this song
He ruins the originality of the song
And also
Bernard can play most parts without him
Was looking for someone to spot that. Not keen on that extra guitar
In November we're going to see Peter Hook. You can't get any closer to 'Joy Division'.
It needs to be Peter hook singing
its not a cover if they wrote all the music for it. jesus
It's sad to see this in a way But great in another. Ian should be there.
A great absence. Still a great song.
First band i've seen that uses electronic drums live.
Ian's better!
Ian never saw the crowds he drew
I think they are in mood with Ian, and this is very sad and I think they play it a little aggressiv and emotional, but I understand that. My eyes are very wet, the water is not only in the clouds on this day. RIP Ian and Dance Dance Dance Dance Dance to the radio....
This sounds superb, because its the original lads doing it
Finally someone gets it. It’s their song as much as Ian’s. Joy Division “fans” are too precious.

John frusciante sent me here with the statement that Bernard’s guitar playing was his influence on californication recording. I can definitely hear it!
It's good but they're only playing at about 80% of the speed of the original. The original is much better.
whats with the confederate flag on his guitar? 👀

2 guitars + bass. Hooky & the Light have 2 bass and 1 guitar. A different sound.
Electric drum set? That’s an interesting choice.
I don’t see why not... I play electric too, it’s a pleasure to use!

Everyone griping about Bernard singing Ian’s part - Bernard wrote the song. Peter hook wrote most but this was Bernard’s.

Ian looks a lot healthier here, such a shame RIP
Nit picking admittedly but, relatively speaking, this version is too busy/cluttered. The genius of the original Joy Division was that it was was lean and mean and the lead guitar cut through the mix like a knife.
Barney’s voice does not suit Joy Division music and lyrics, Hooky’s almost does, but when they sing as a duet it works best for me
good performance despite Sumner's voice can not be compared to that of Curtis
There had to be some they wouldn't touch like maybe Dead Souls or Atrocity Exhibition, etc.
wow.. what is that drum kit.. any ideas? i need that
Toms and cymbals from a roland electric drum set while the snare and bass drum are acoustic but have drum triggers attached
Can't hardly hear the bass. Whole thing too tinny sounding, no guts. Admittedly I'm not listening through headphones. 😉
Compare to the original Joy Division's transmission this sounds too slow hehe, but still decent
You can't say it's a cover when it's literally the same guys lol but yeah it sounds different
sounds great
try rocking a dixie flag on yer guitar in 2022 hahaha
Best Cover of some Originals ❤
The timing is all over the place. Bassist just wants to go for it but the drummer is holding them back.
Well they weren't in their early 20s playing this song like they did back in 78-80
Hookys free not to be held back these days thankfully x

Jesus christ the timing is so messed up its still good but wtf
Terrible. Drummer ran outta gas in 60 seconds
