  • “Leaves of three, leave them be” 🍃 for poison oak and poison ivy. Poison sumac has more leaves. The same treatment still applies for all of these plants.
If you’re concerned at all (even if it’s a mild rash), derms are here for you 🙏🏼

If you've scrubbed the area thoroughly with a lot of friction and a good soap like Dawn, and are positive the oils are fully removed, scratching the rash will NOT cause it to spread, and it is NOT contagious to others. You generally don't want to be scratching it anyway, as popped blisters can be pretty painful. Much easier said than done, but try not to if you can at all help it.
The oil being left on your skin for an extended amount of time is what causes the rash to develop. Once the rash is there and it's been cleaned, it cannot get anywhere else as you've removed the oil already.
Poison Ivy rash doesn't cause histamine release, so antihistamines like Benadryl will not have any effect on it. It may help you sleep better due to the sedative effect, but that's really it.
The most important thing you can do if you've come into skin contact with Poison Ivy is go thoroughly wash the area as soon as possible, with Dawn and lots of vigorous scrubbing. The friction is what really gets rid of the oil. If you're quick enough at washing the oil off, the rash will never develop.

Itching may not cause it to spread if you have washed all the oil off but could still cause a skin infection called cellulitis

Scratching does make it spread. The blisters do not contain urishol oil. The oil stays on surfaces for up to 5 years.

It will only spread if you haven't cleaned off the oil

And of course the doctor says nothing about using hot water[really hot-just shy of scalding-whatever the most you can tolerate before actually burning yourself]on the affected areas. Always just the symptoms. Never want to get to the actual underlying cause.

I’m experiencing a really really bad case of P Ivy (started as an arborist) and the only things that have helped me have been peppermint oil and scolding hot showers. Both of these are probably irritable to most people but to me it’s worth not feeling itchy my entire day

Use a degreaser soap. Dawn dish soap.
Don’t use an oil based soap.

Question I don’t have any rash but itchy after helping my dad do yardwork and he got poison ivy on his hands and feet but I didn’t but I still feel itchy. What do you recommend I put on it?

I read the oil stays on your skin so you need to wash with dawn soap and scrub it off because it breaks the oils down like grease

100% agree with you. In the last year serving as a wildland fire fighter in California I’ve gotten poison oak several times. Every time more insufferable than the previous. I too wish I could just be put in an induced coma until the itchy blistery rash was gone

@@miria81london Prednisone is the best! It’s the only thing that works for me too. Wish my Doctor would prescribe me an extra bottle to keep on hand though haha. Calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream, and the cortisone steroid shot do nothing at all for me

You missed the absolute MOST important one: When you wash your skin (immediately after exposure is best) you MUST use a wash cloth. If you smear black axle grease on your skin, soap and water won't remove it alone...just think of the toxic urushiol oil as invisible axle grease.

Washing with soap and water releases the oils and actually makes it spread more
