Great review Jody, thank you. This is working out exactly as I envisioned: Tudor introduces Root Beer GMT, watch nuts are ambivalent and opt for the Pro instead, which means good root beer availability . I buy one because it is a beautiful watch that is perfect for me. Tudor drops it 2 years later due to lackluster sales. 20 years later, when I gift it to my grandson, it is a cult classic that is hard to come by. Well played by me 😁
I agree! I think this one is much more interesting than the Pro, which is pretty much a Rolex copy. I mean, it is Tudor, and pretty much all of them are based on Rolex. I have nothing against that, I love Tudor. But I want inspired designs like the BB58 or this "Root Beer", not copies. But I guess that's what most people want, based on what we are seeing.
I luckily got the bracelet version two days after the release. My AD told me that crown and bezel is solid gold, the end links are gold and the rest of centre links are gold-capped. I love it! Good review!
Common man.. think a little 😂 Tudor is Rolex..do you think they'll ever sell you a watch with even a tiny amount of gold for less than 12k$ 😂😂😂 no wayyyy i actually love this model but I'm annoyed with the gold plating, BTW most AD's will tell you anything just to make a sell but i guarantee you 1 thing: according to this price- this watch doesn't even have 20$ worth of gold in it!!!! If it did I'd buy especially because I love two tone watches @@rudolfvalentine9152
Well AD called and said he had the watch with bracelet, it looks much better in person, the gold isn't yellow, its softer.. the watch looks great with the bracelet. I have the tudor pepsi and the 58. The rootbeer fits like the pepsi but its much softer and warmer.
Just ordered the standard GMT - gotta say the gilt version looks pretty nice here in your review, though! I think you really have to try it on in person to decide if the chonk is too much. For me, I found it was much less noticeable than expected when I got the chance to try one out. I'd prefer it to be slimmer, but it's tolerable. Ball have just released (for pre-order) a true GMT watch which is slightly cheaper and slightly smaller than the Tudor and has an exhibition caseback and quick-change date. I'd love to see a comparison with the Tudor if you ever get the Ball in your hands.
I feel the same. The thickness in person is noticeable, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I'd like to see it with the 39mm case, though. Might see when the AD near me gets them in.
Eh hem!!! The first Tudor with a display case back (and first in house manufacture movement) is the Tudor North Flag. 😛 Great video, great watch. I have the BBGMT Diet Pepsi. Not sure root beer is for me.. but hey.. it takes all types to spin the planet.
Many thanks for getting this one out there so soon Jodi! I think this is the surprising winner over the pro IMO. That Mr X is a total legend! We all need a friend like that. Cheers
It’s been almost a year ago but I attempted to buy a new explorer…Of course I couldn’t… So my last explorer is the last Rolex I will ever buy. Not purchase a Tudor( Really like the model in this review)…Why? Because Rolex is the umbrella company…So I spent my $6000 US on Omega instead!
Another fine review. I like this watch quite a lot but it is financial 'unobtainium' for me. Who would have thought that 7,000+ AUD (has to be on a bracelet) would be the sensible alternative to a Rolex? My GMT alternatives - Glycine, Hamilton, or Revue Thommen.
@@seamasterist Had not seen that until you suggested it. Very cool and I'd love to get one. A bit more stout price-wise than my budget would allow, unfortunately.
Nice review. When I first saw the BB58 I was quite intrigued with the look, style and heritage. However, the more I see of them, the less excited I become, especially the bracelet with the odd rivets style links. However I also don’t get why people spend years on a waiting list for a Rolex? But each to their own. If we were all the same life would be boring. 👍
Whoa, at 11:03 the seconds han is moving in the normal direction. 2 second later at 11:05, the seconds hand is moving counterclockwise. Camera illusion?
I think I'd have to pass based on the thickness, especially the way these look slab-sided. I've been eyeballing the Glycine Combat Sub GMT in root beer/bronze case. About 11.5mm thick with a display back. Sometimes mass-produced movements have their place.
You could do a heap worse. I really like the combat Sub diver. The lack of height makes it wear really well and it’s solidly built. I also have an Airman, the Steinhart 1655 (…or I guess BB Pro now!) copy and the Lorier Hyperion. All 3 are 13mm or less in height so there’s absolutely no way I’d wear a BB GMT at 14.6mm! 3rd party / ébauche mov’ts have been the backbone of Swiss watchmaking for centuries. In house mov’ts are great for watch brands but not always great for the watch buying public. A lot of marketing BS, especially at the more approachable end of the market.
I have the Glycine combat sub GMT GL0380 and love it. It stayed in my wrist for 3 weeks straight when I got it. You won’t be disappointed with these models, they look and wear is great! It’s a shame how glycine is often overlooked……they just released a 39mm combat sub and got no attention at all.
I have a GL0076 and an Airman DC-4 (GL0217). Great review as always Jody. I've always liked the look of these, but the case thickness combined with it being very flat just means they don't wear that well in my opinion.
Another great vid. If I may offer one small correction, the Black Bay master chronometer (black ceramic) also has a viewable movement through the caseback.
Ah, you also noticed that. I did not think of the one you mentioned. One more, BLACK BAY FIFTY-EIGHT 925. And as for first ever, The North Flag. Sadly not made anymore.
Great review of a fantastic watch! That new camera set up is really making a difference. The images are stunning. Camera work is really sharp but buttery smooth (if that makes sense 😂).
Yeah, I agree with you about the leather. I did have the Pepsi Tudor GMT and it looked amazing on the leather strap. But the Root beer has the same issue as the Pepsi (and the reason I got rid of it)……the size. I wish they would just hurry up and squeeze the GMT movement into the 39mm blackbay case they already have. Would much rather have a 39mm GMT that’s a little thinner than another GMT in the same case size as the Pepsi just in the root beer colouring…
The root beer gmt is perfect on my 7.5in wrist. For smart casual and even jeans the s&g is just a fantastic watch, esp on the leather strap. Downside….it won’t fit under a double cuff, but that’s about it for me. Agree that a 39mm root beer would be a good addition to the range for those with smaller wrist tho….
Its does look better on leather or nato. you definitely feel the difference in the way they feel between the S&G and BB58 but i was quite supprised and even more so when i drop to my tudor mini sub. I think Tudor is great in the fact it has quality and heritage without being in your face like rolex.
Love my Pepsi-bezeled GMT. I bought it on the excellent NATO strap but would like to source the leather strap here; however, they're hard to come by. Mine was running dead flat the last time I graphed it. Can't see springing for the GMTMaster II with this model's quality and accuracy. Cheers!
The silver Black Bay (it had a lovely taupe dial) also had a see-through case back (probably more to save money on silver than to show off a pretty movement).
Picked mine up on leather this week is an awesome watch and prefer it to the older GMT. The BB 925 also has an exhibition case back and it looks great. Thanks for another great review!

It's a handsome watch to be sure. It looks like the snowflake on the GMT hand is larger than its 2018 predecessor in stainless. One question about the text, don't "Officially Certified" and "Chronometer" mean the same thing? It just seems to be redundant, like the "Department of Redundancy Department." Cheers, Jody!
We like what we like. To me, THIS was the watch to swoon over. But, Im not a top shelf Geneva watch reviewer. I’m just a normal Joe Schmoe. The root beer bezel, color of dial, selection of hands, and even the crown make this the best looking watch they released. Well done “Mr. X”…and well done video Jody. I want one….
Talking of Rolex alternative's have you seen the Toni's dive watch with in house moment also the norqain adventure, both have in-house movement's both well under £3000 😉👍
Great review, Jody. I do think the Pro is better, but this one has those lovely colours! It's a tough choice. But not for me. I won't be getting either. I need a poor man's Tudor
The Black Bay ceramic Master Chronometer also has a clear case back, don’t know if it’s available in Aus or not though Jodie. Definitely on my shopping list but will have to wait a goodly time having just acquired a lovely Longines from their Spirit collection.
20+ watches later into my collection, I've decided that IF I'm going to spend anything above $3K, it's going to be going to a Grand Seiko. And I'm eying the 60th Anniversary Heritage Limited Edition SBGP007. That watch is a thing of beauty! This Tudor is also nice, but I can't see myself forking over that kind of scratch for a boring BB. I'm sure whomever DOES go for one, though, will be very satisfied.
I just picked one of these up … it’s simply beautiful. And it’s going to be a life long keeper. Tudor knocked it out of the park with this one. Fits amazingly (for me) and I don’t care whatever ‘niggles’ anyone has for this watch .. it is perfect! Truly a gem of a watch.
The colorway doesn’t really do it for me but I like the basic layout very much. I called my AD and put myself on the list for the Pro. Curious to see how it wears. I’m not super concerned about it’s thickness in isolation. It’s more about that thickness constrained to a 39mm diameter.
I think that it's strange after going to a AD in London after looking at this watch, I've asked them about the crown and they said it's Solid Gold?Checking on different watch channels most say cap, even going back asking them I think that they don't know the difference now as they just see gold. Was looking at the same Root beer with leather strap.
Great looking watch. I like the thickness but not overly keen on leather strap with capped gold. Love the vintagy sapphire. 8.5 out of 10 for me. I love the ceramic bead mechanism on the buckle closure. Not too keen on the level of gap between the strap and case.
North Flag was my Luxury watch gateway drug, still love it! Also has (had, they discontinued it sadly, just as integrated bracelets got trendy again!) the same or very similar deployant to this on the leather strap version.
@@p0pk1d I guess I had a series of gateways, but I too still have my North Flag and love it. It seems like an alternate universe Explorer in a universe where Rolex isn't terrified to change anything in any substantial way. I was sad to see it discontinued, too. I know the Black Bay is the big hit for Tudor, but it's kind of a bummer for me because its success has transitioned Tudor away from daring new designs and toward homages to old Rolexes. :(
I’d have that strap swapped around before leaving the shop…I wonder if nice fine brushed sides would look better keeping the polished top bevel/chamfer and having a matching one on the bottom edge.
"It will scuff and scratch if you abuse it....so don't abuse it." Ha ha. Best advice ever. FYI - I stopped by my local A.D. in San Diego last Saturday and they didn't have it yet. Mr. X has some connections.
Since I’ll likely never have the real thing, I wish Pagani would expand their BB homage offerings…. A version of this one and the Harrods green one would be killer…
Well If I think GMT first two brand what comes to mind is roflex and tudor... After that comes......... Well many have after this point own point of view what they have seen and what have been in the list.. Like me eterna royal kontiki glycine airman seiko jeti
I’m biased bc I wasn’t around in the 70s but I’m tired every watch coming with aluminum bezels for the “retro” look. Just like you don’t want scratches on the crystal, same goes for the bezel. You can make ceramic in a matte finish I believe.
Interesting re the case back, my smiley ETA BB has a larger but plainer Tudor Geneve engraved (not laser etched). Wonder when they switched how the did the casebacks.
(Late comment) The first two links on the bracelet are in fact gold, the rest of the bracelet capped, got that watching Robin Henry Watches, check them out, they need the support.
I am not a fan of larger watches (41mm isn’t huge, but a tad larger than I like), I don’t like thick watches, I don’t like heavy watches, and I don’t find a GMT complication particularly useful. So why do I absolutely love this watch?
Have to agree , nothing radical or new just a colour change from Pepsi to Rootbeer. It got a great retro vibe though with those warm tones. Leather strap version cries out for the jeans and old leather jacket look. Think the new pro overall nice , but too thick for 39mm case. May have worked better as a 41mm. Looks like the chubby love child of a 1655 and a North Flag. So good to see Tudor staying busy with new watches though, and I hope they push forward with more that are separate from the Black bays. Feel They've got a real language of design for creating the cool working guy's watch.
Just a general question.Have you considered reviewing more Australian independent brands like erroyl etc.Thinking of getting one for a while and would be interested in your review.
Really want to see the Rootbeer or Pepsi come in 39mm. The new Black Bay pro is good but sadly it has 14.6mm in thickness, which is the deal-breaker for me
Airline pilot here. True GMTs are actually useful to me. And when I say true GMT, I mean a jumping-local time-hour hand AND…AND…a rotating 24 hour bezel. The two features TOGETHER make for a useful tool watch for an airline pilot. So, I’m still hoping for a Tudor 39 or 38 mm true (both features) GMT. I have owned the Rolex all black, ceramic GMT, the Rolex Batman GMT, the Rolex 42 mm Explorer II, and the Tudor GMT. Sold all the Rolexes and kept the Tudor. Wear it almost everyday (Grand Seiko Spring Drive, Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000, and Rolex Sky-Dweller need wrist time too).
Good video. This whole renaissance of 70s-style watches is interesting. For the longest time I thought they were pretty ugly. The use of lots of earth tones, weird case shapes and gaudy bracelets all were signs of a goofy time in fashion and style. But, now they have that vintage-look that is somewhat intriguing. Or, I am simply influenced by the all these YT reviewers. It wouldn't be the first time. I do applaud the folks at Tudor who had the courage to go in this direction. This model and the Pro, definitely evoke that 70s-vibe. I am still not sure I could pull of this watch (I have no style), but these watches are a nod to another era.
Great review! Nice watch but I’m not sure why people keep saying I wonder how the new Black Bay Pro is going to wear? It’s the same style case and same thickness and almost everyone, including me with 8.5” wrists find that their GMT watches wear large and uncomfortable after a day of wearing.

Here to appreciate Jody's camera upgrades and also excellent review! Big fan 🥰
The BB ceramic has a display case back.
What's the significance in the numbers on the lug? 79833 🤷♂️ Stunning watch. I absolutely love the aesthetic of the Black bay 58.
A gold GMT hand would improve contrast/readability
10:25 ... OR, and im just spitballing here, but you could swap the strap around, pretty sure the spring bars arent welded in place 😉
For sure, but then that dreamy clasp will be upside down.
I’d have that strap swapped around before leaving the shop…I wonder if nice fine brushed sides would look better keeping the polished top bevel/chamfer and having a matching one on the bottom edge.
Morning
Moooorning Shredder!
So beautiful I'm waiting to save enough to buy one....homage when it shows up at Aliexpress 😅
Afternoon Jody, this is one of my grail watches, just beautiful, the pocket shot really makes it pop!
I own the Pepsi GMT from Tudor, and I love it. The thickness does not bother me at all.
Same. Totally agree.
Same here
A very nice looking watch. I like it!
On that leather strap I love it, not too keen on the bracelet though.
"It will scuff and scratch if you abuse it....so don't abuse it." Ha ha. Best advice ever. FYI - I stopped by my local A.D. in San Diego last Saturday and they didn't have it yet. Mr. X has some connections.
I really like it but even thicker than my Aquis is probably pushing it a bit.
They really like to stretch the meaning of „new“ with these latest releases. Old stuff with a bit of polish basically.
Thanks for the vid, mate!
Driving a forklift is awesome for keeping your automatic watch powered up. Goodness gracious, this watch is attractive!
If you don't like the way they do the strap backwards can't it just be turned around rather than get used to it or does the set-up not work that way?
Definitely possible, but then that dreamy clasp will be upside down.
My Tudor North Flag has a display case back
Wait. Did I just have a stroke? Was the second hand rotating counter-clockwise?
Totally ahould have had gold hands and indices, I think.
Since I’ll likely never have the real thing, I wish Pagani would expand their BB homage offerings…. A version of this one and the Harrods green one would be killer…
How come they dont tell u the detail on the site if their indices are gold
I love mine. 👍I got the bracelet one. Very classy watch. My wrist is a little bigger than yours though.
Definitely better on a bigger wrist!
It’s simply gorgeous, fantastic colour scheme…. I wonder if Cambridgeshire has a Mr. X….
(Late comment) The first two links on the bracelet are in fact gold, the rest of the bracelet capped, got that watching Robin Henry Watches, check them out, they need the support.
Does look really good on the leather, bit blingy on the bracelet, bit too heavy on the nato. Nice 👍
I am not a fan of larger watches (41mm isn’t huge, but a tad larger than I like), I don’t like thick watches, I don’t like heavy watches, and I don’t find a GMT complication particularly useful. So why do I absolutely love this watch?
I'm definitely a fan of these new Tudor watches, hopefully I can pick something up after my daughter's wedding.
Hi Jody, Why is the seconds hand moving in anticlockwise direction at point 11:06 mm:ss in the video?
Editing!!
The new Black Bay pro is good but sadly it has 14.6mm in thickness, which is the deal-breaker for me
Tudor still missing something in their releases...
Ahh Mr. X (Jody) has bought another Tudor :D nice review as always!
Shhhhhh! 😉
At 11:04 the second hand is moving backwards. Am I missing something here?
Cool, a Spinnaker Fleuss tribute watch 😉
Great review! Nice watch but I’m not sure why people keep saying I wonder how the new Black Bay Pro is going to wear? It’s the same style case and same thickness and almost everyone, including me with 8.5” wrists find that their GMT watches wear large and uncomfortable after a day of wearing.
Wear my Tudor GMT 24/7. 7 inch wrists. Never bothers me. Love it.
I really wish Tudor would make a slimmer regular Black Bay or a Black Bay 58 with date complication. I do love the S&G color-scheme though.
I’m still going to get the BB Pepsi GMT than this one.
I tried the BB58 and looks small on my wrist (7cm)
The BB GMT and this one will fit perfectly!
