I have a piece of rusted metal on my desk from Holland 1. When I was a kid, my grandmother took me there very often when it was outside and I picked a piece up off the floor as a souvenir - sorry! Is so good to see how well preserved she is now. Same as Alliance - She was in a heck of a state before the restoration. I've only been to your museum once since the various restorations with limited time so plan to make a day of it sometime this summer.

Thank you that was really interesting, I had no idea it had sunk and was left for 69 years. What an amazing piece of history, I’m going back to the submarine museum in November, can’t wait ! 😀

Cool ...a 20th Century Mary Rose.
A later WWI era class of Holland boats were built at Canadian Vickers in Montreal under licence during that war's US neutrality period
R.N. submarines H-1 through H-10 came from there.

Yes, if i am not wrong it is also based on the Holland class, but i think some detials was changed. Originaly it had a paraffin engine (for the generator hybrid system) if i am not wrong, but it was changed to a Diesel engine a few years later. De Laval submarines from the 1890s was driven by a large steam feeded pressure accumulator.

US developed the original Holland design and sold it I think ?

Holland did sell the design to Britain, which developed their slightly larger A-class from the original.

@mikearmstrong8483 None of the RN holland boats did very much from memory reading about them years ago. I think one was sent to do something hostile navy related in North Sea but broke down? I suppose the pure innovation, trials, etc, alone made them one of the most useful and important boats ever made regardless. I live about a half-hour drive from Gosport, so may pay her a visit in the coming days.

@@thegreencat9947 Actualy no , davinci made a drawing and few sketches but never build one ,
Cornelisz Drebbel actualy build the first navigable submarine . 1572 - 7 November 1633) was a Dutch engineer and inventor. He was the builder of the first operational submarine in 1620 and an innovator who contributed to the development of measurement and control systems, optics and chemistry.

Van Drebbel didn't build the first Dutch submarine, because he had permanently emigrated to England by that time. His design was just a copy of drawings made by an Englishman named Bourne from 80 years before.
Also, his was not a navigable submarine; it was a leather covered rowboat than ran awash and was propelled by oars. His claim that it was rowed at a depth of 20' for 6 hours is discounted as nonsense by knowledgeable naval historians.
