Always buried welded or grazed cast iron in sand and allowed it to slow cool. Preheated the whole part prior to the repair. Been a long time, grandfather who was an ironworker made sure I would have a trade if college didn't work out. He and his friends put me through the wringer in the weld and boiler shop. Really helped me in engineering school.
Brazed, typo
Another dumb question from the programmer. Does getting the cast iron like that affect the temper?
I once wrote a program for some industrial pipe welding equipment so that subsequent welds would do some of the heat treating of earlier welds so that the finished product didn't have to be heat treated as long.
use a mig and pien it while using an oxy to keep it warm when finished bury it in lime or vey fine sand to let it cool right down maybe 24hrs
I live in Australia rang the guy today.Ordered my eyemuff's of him. Mention your show and he has even thrown in a bonus gift.❤
Awesome! Jorge is amazing and so are EYEMUFFS!!!!
IM in Victoria OZ ,can you post eye muffs link .? Thx mate
NZ here and I'd also like the link to eyemuffs
I also live in new Zealand in taumarunui.
I've been wanting some as well.@@liamunderwood3115
Is there an Aussie connection for the earmuffs and goggles? I'm keen.
Showtime from Jamie and her talent with the camera and the sound is awesome you have grown grasshopper!😊 And Ian your talent on metal work has taught this 66 year old some serious tricks.. You are both awesome 😎 May Peace follow you always!
We never mind the grinding sounds us who fabricate and or work with metal. These are the sounds of our people lol I had to rewatch back from the dead yesterday because it was easier than explaining who you were to a friend
Thank you. 🙏
As a person ages, a car that is smooth, quiet, and dependable is more important than “look at me noise”. In my 60s now, easy to get in and out of, is very important also!
Ian you are an all round craftsman I haven't done or watched brazing for about 40 years, I used to love doing it because like you said you can mold with the flame and almost create a river of molten metal to do the hard work for you.
Jamie another sterling production love the interaction between you two so all I can end this with is WHAT A COUPLE !!!! Lots of love John in the UK 👍👍👍👍
I always told my trainees, there’s no stupid questions only the one not asked. Great video 🍻👍
I would say, It's better to ask too many questions than to ask not enough questions.
As a kid growing up in a 50s repair shop, I was taught the same, grandpa and dad were patient in ans my many questions
Brazing with a cutting tip? Bad boy!
This was very educational for me. I’m 68 and lived in the country, Vermont specifically, so I’ve experienced many encounters with the old time service guys. Seen a lot of braise work and repairs, but had never watched the process until I asked a friend to fix a pinhole in my air compressor tank. I watched as he proceeded to turn the pinhole into something you couldn’t plug with a banana! Never let anyone talk me into a braise repair since then.
Apparently not a good repair for thin walled steel with unknown rust behind it.
Definitely not a pressure tank
They make a DC /AC welding rod for pot Metal /cast metal that works great in that material
👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks for posting, needed something good to watch. ❤️
We are glad you are here!
Do enjoy your back and forth banter between the two of you. Not only can it be humorous but also informative historically as well. It makes the entire video series so much better tha the old tv show as enjoyable as that was.
The Lincoln is going to be a very cool vehicle.
Agreed.
Cruiser not a bruiser , kool kustom
im in oz and we love quickie videos,,,maybe i shouldnt term it like that. but theory is less editing equals more videos..bring it on, ty Jamie for what editing you used to do. now relax n pump videos out
Yes!
Very nice job Ian and Jamie Question I was taught When you are working with cast iron Drill a small hole on each end of the crack to keep it from spreading
Absolutely loved this episode! My dad was a mechanic from the 40s to the 90s and given a chance to braze something he jumped on it. I have an old cast iron skillet around here somewhere that he brazed the handle back on about sixty years ago. Beautiful work and a good reminder about doing with what you have.👍🏼
Interesting I worked at a furnace factory and brazed copper pipe for years nothing that heavy looks like a whole different animal, love how you mix up the content for all to enjoy!
Learned something new when In shows his talent and experience. Hello Ms. Jamie ❤🤔🤩
Those manifolds look symetrical, like you could put the right one on the left, etc. for front headpipes. This would free up ALL your clearance issues at the firewall, though working the exhaust pipes around your accessory mounts (ac & alternator) and belts is the compromise. I'm only guessing, but it's worth a test fit.
We like it
Ian when you started to clean up the Bronze, I was like oh my, their goes the integrity of the original atempt.
After cleaning I did see that too much impurities was still involved. The braze that didn't go to all surrounding cast.
I was tought to go at least 1 inch past the (weld) brazing always just for that. 👍✌🇺🇸
I'm totally digging this!
Wasn't sure if was real but heck yeah!
Groovy
It is very real. No AI here. Thanks for being here.
I have used pliers in the past to hold the stub of the rod so I didn't waste as much. But that trick of attaching it to the other rod is perfect. Thanks!
Great timing! I was just talking about repairing a 1929 Model A radiator with brazing!
I've watched you for years Ian. You do awesome work!!!
If I was in LA,California dreamin on such a winters day
Love this Lincoln, keep kicking ass and doing your thing. 🇺🇸💪
Thanks for sharing Ian. I have also used the 309 S.S. Tig rod with cast iron and had much luck.
Hey Ian sometimes you have a soothing tone sort of bob ross vibes so cool...
Bob is def a vibe
Hi all from Pittsburgh, PA
Thanks, appreciate the brazing lesson❤
I like him brazing with a cutting touch. Rosebud works good too
I welded tons of cast iron parts ,worked in a steel mill for years. When I was done brazing I would heat part up to red then wrap it in caowool , so it would cool very slowly.
I reline my gas forge with caowool. That stuff is great!
A true artist blended with a craftsman. So many more things you can do with a torch. It was my first hot flame back some 60 years ago in junior high shop class
Ian You are a lucky Duck to havs Jamie do all the video work I know it takes a long time for her Not to take away from you, but you are a lucky duck
We enjoy working together
First off, I love your work and have for many years.
Keep on keeping on!
I saw somewhere that rust inhibitor/prevention products should be applied to rusty surfaces, not cleaned ones.
Apparently it interacts with the oxidized metal better than clean metal.
Always good to make your processes more efficient.
Can’t wait to see the Zephyr done
Hey guys, The Zephr is my dream!!! Ian and Jamie. Who will ride in the back and who will drive?? I'll be in the back. Love you guys..
Nice brazing work on the cast iron manifold, it was rather therapeutic to watch , l must say Ian 👍
JB weld works good!I’ve used on my VW Ghia cam plug just below my main seal. No more leaks!
Thanks for the instructions for a novice. Did a little car work some 70 years ago, and you make it all come back
I have a 1948 Farmall Super A that my Dad bought back in about 1973. It had been repainted and looked really nice. I used it to mow our huge yard for many years. Ran into trees, dropped off into washes and gullies etc. and kept on going.
He and I (probably about 14 years old then) were doing some maintenance on it one day and I noticed what looked like welds on the top of the front axle at the very end where the paint had come off. My Dad said that was brazed.
To illustrate, the axle runs horizontally from the frame and out each side. At each end it turns down about 12-18" and the hub and wheel attaches down there. That's a pretty long lever-arm and evidently someone broke it at sometime.
I ran this tractor off the road into a ditch once along with all the other things I mentioned and it never broke. I still have the tractor and after 55+ years of abuse (no telling when that was done) that brazing is still holding. That guy knew what he was doing.
Ive watched ian do this alot over 4 different shows and UA-cam. Talented man he is😊
Cool man!
I have only brazed once in my life, was able to do it by watching videos from, UA-cam University. Ian, you mentioned about folks who are not into this this kind of automotive repair, for me, it is interesting to watch the process, even though I may never utilize what I have watched, my brain has just been expanded with more knowledge, win, win.
The dreaded “PING”. The welding shop, I worked at in the 80’s, had a box of asbestos to put cast iron parts in to cool down! Ah the good old days. As someone else mentioned we would also heat the whole part up. Great job love what you do!!
Thanks for sharing the cast iron brazing! (err..welding) Definitely Interesting! 😁
Very fansinating. Most builders shy away from brazing. It's clear you know what you are doing. I love watching craftsman at work.
Ta ficando
Top 💯👍
Thank you
Watching Ian is like being in shop class again, I love it! Good to see the non tv version of Ian working and sharing his experiences.
that was an awesome lesson thank you both
Great video. It was very interesting watching a rarely used technique and explained well. Thank you.
Great job, thanks for sharing, all the best to yous and your loved ones
Thanks for the lesson in bronze welding cast very handy to know , I watched my dad when I was a kid in the 70s weld up along the roof sills of a Morris minor bread van with bronze , took him months , great cinematography Jamie ,
This takes me right back to my apprenticeship days in the 1980s
Great job on the repair from someone who knows next to nothing about brazing or welding. Thank you for the class.
Love your work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video!! When we first built my ‘71 Nova I helped my Dad fix a crack in a stock exhaust manifold, worked great.
Hey you should get LANRUSL for a vanity plate for the Zephyr, lol.
this was really Kool . thanks for sharing this!
Cool Man
My father in law was a mechanic ! Back in the 1970’s I worked for his forklift company, he would weld cast iron water pumps , manifolds, and other items with a stainless steel rod , stick😊 welder never had problems , manifold’s for 6 cyl engines , water housings
Nice job Ian!! I braze my brazing rods together too!
Its been 30 years since ive brazed any thing but it is a good thing to know for just such an occasion. Thanks Jamie and Ian!
Great job!!! I'm looking forward to an awesome 2025!!
That was a very practical educational video, thanks! 😊
This was some good content, really enjoy the Husband and Wife team effort that goes into your videos, keep the videos coming you guys make a great Team...............................................................................Fort Worth,Tx
Just FYI from someone who has watched every single UA-cam video : Whenever you guys say that you think it’s too loud due to an air compressor or a heater or a fan or an air conditioner in my opinion we literally cannot hear it on video so I would just run it and be comfortable
I think your new process of non editing is the way to go, 👍🏻. There is no need for the fancy heavy metal guitar music and all of that stuff. Bad Chad and Jolene always do one shoot videos. Keep em going, folks, because it's about the art form, not the special effects. Good luck and belated happy new year. Joe, Somerset, England. ❤❤❤
Watching you use the oxy-acetylene torch took me back to high school and welding shop which an elective back in 1970s
I was thinking about Dude and how he was such a good buddy
Daily (maybe) dose of the dynamic duo of Ian and Jamie? Yes!!
Love watching any of your content!!! Keep doing what u do 😂😂😂😂😊!!!
Another great video 👍👍
How can something this HOT be a COOL project ?
When the Roussels do it !
Ian ___ Do you not use brazing tips with your torch. I use various tip sizes for different jobs. I like them because you can set the flame to a pinpoint to concentrate the heat. But it looks like you are doing pretty good as is.
Thanks Ian for showing that. I've never seen that technique appreciate it
My brother is a professional welder. He said, put that piece right in the oven. At 300° after you welled, and it will not bend. Be quick about it, but it works. Oven 300°
I fixed a few Ford cast iron exhaust manifolds. I drilled a small hole at the ends of the cracks, wire- brushed the area, then MIG-welded on each side of the crack, then put a MIG weld in the center, connecting the two welds/sides.
Jamie you have such a calming and soothing voice, Ian keep up the great work.
Agreed...& one of the better camerawoman 👍🏼
A GREAT video, THANX🎉
Is it possible to use a magnet and some kind of magnetic powder that highlights the crack? I recall seeing that used on cast iron engine blocks
Yes
Paint the manifolds with exhaust paint and cure the paint in a gas bbq type grill. I have done this and it works great.
not easy to repair cast iron, thank you!🤗
Very nice, great job
Excellent brazing explanations for everyone. Really enjoyed this episode content, length and of course the editing! ⚡️
Get ya a size 6,7,8 tip and it will be more control instead of the cutting torch!....
LOVE love love the new Ts
To cut down on compressor noise, put it in a box. not a sealed 1 but it needs to be insulated for sound and egg crates work great for dispersing sound. so does soft foam.
Great video of an important process that few people know about.
Great video y'all. Jamie is asking the questions that arin my head. Metal work, mind reading. What a team.
I enjoyed this episode very much. Thanks.
Looking good
Hey guys, great video, enjoyed.....Ralph
that was fun to watch . you dont see anyone doing that much here on you tube . well maybe but i have not seen or searched for it lol . good job buddy .
I love the episode. Just wondering why not just look for a replacement manifold. Those are very common engines (isn't it a 351?) and stock manifolds should be easily sourced and cheap. Unless i'm mistaken? It makes good content though. Loved it.
@ FullCustomIan just seen that RayBan Sunglasses has a new meta for cameras!
Just a FYI...✌♥️
My vote for a name for the Zephyr Z-quiet landcrusier Jamie and Ian
Good tutorial on gas welding 😅😅
Hello you 2 hope all is great 😊
