- Halftime performance by the Michigan Marching Band in the 1970 Rose Bowl. This was the second of Revelli and Cavender's social consciousness shows, the first being the famous "peace show" at the 1969 Michigan-Ohio State game. Musical arrangements by Jerry Bilik and announcements by H.H. Hanson. This group had 168 playing members and was led by drum major Mark Brown. This band was the first to perform the "floating Block M" seen in all Michigan pregames.
That Auld Lang Syne march at 0:24 - 1:29 has got to be one of the boldest openings to a halftime show I have ever seen. It is so powerful and strong in sound.
Woke in 1970, bet that was popular. At the time.
Over a month to prepare for this performance and they couldn't memorize the music?
The vast majority of bands in those days did not memorize their music ... not sure why. And this was a bowl game so the show was rehearsed over a period of about three or four days.
@@MMBFan1 Beginning in 1966 my high school memorized all music for field performance. We had 4 days to do this Five numbers for each show.. Same in college 1971 to 1975.
1:45 we'll never see another Rose Bowl tied 3-3 at halftime.
I like the fact that they are calling for an end to air pollution, but, hmm -- the irony. What state is more responsible than Michigan for L.A.'s air pollution?
Did they already know the first Earth Day was going to be in a couple of months?
I was there in the press box. Great show.
Starting at 3:50 I find it amazing how countercultural the baby boom generation was as young adults, only to become the establishment and be against social change when they got older. They would be the exact same people who would get mad if a marching band did such an overtly political (and left of center at that) halftime show in the present day
