My dad is out there with the band…he was MMB I think 3 years. Still goes to homecoming every year so cool watching this.
I remember being shown this video in rank leader camp in 1992. That season, we did Varsity drill similar to what was shown at the beginning of the film… a pre-cursor to Varsity being added back into pregame. Note that the music for the hula dance number at 8:35 is Hawaiian War Chant.
Brian Bowman was just startng out at Michigan and became one of the greatest euphonium players of the century. I was a jumior in the band looking forward to what became 33 years of teacing music and computers.
I love how there is plenty of Michigan Band history on UA-cam now. I'm sure at this point there is just about every single year of the band's history from 1940 - 2024 uploaded online, and I'm sure there are plenty of more reels beyond that. They really are a time capsule of how life was back then. Granted, I'm sure parts of this promotional video were embellished a tad-bit, but who cares honestly. It's just satisfying to see traditions and styles that predated the marching bands of today!
This is literally the moment I became a michigan fan. Im in the crowd about 20 rows off the field. And when they piled up in front, I fell in love.
An alto clarinet solo, standing no less? Oh, how the mighty have fallen…
No-one has fallen. And their still mighty.
He might have stood up, just for the camera shot for that segment.
The year I was born My mom claims she would wrap me up and put me under her bleacher seat..... I remember those brick walls!
We saw this game live, back when halftime was regularly shown, pro and college. Unfortunately, we lost. Regardless, it was one of the many reasons I yearned to be in the Michigan Marching Band. YUBA and always GO BLUE '75 ][\/][ Flags
The Michigan Marching Band is the standard of excellence. YUBA and always GO BLUE!
Yes indeed! GO BLUE!
These were still the old black and white "Symphony Band of the Gridiron" uniforms, designed to look like symphony tuxedos. It was a very cool idea.
Actually the tuxedo uniforms came out in 1962. These were old cross-belted uniforms that look like what tOSU still wears, except the MMB added a cape to the back.
Read about this show in a thread on MGoBlog, looked it up and couldn't believe it was this easy to find. Thank you for documenting this legendary moment in MMB history 🙏🏽
West Coast fan of MMB since 70's grammar school days - great to see MMB marching in Tournament of Roses once again in 2024.
I was at this game and recall seeing Woody Hayes being so mad he kicked a chair around. This was one of Bo Schembechler’s earliest victories.
🥳💛💙
The male commentator was the consummate dolt..... But that's ok.... Michigan defeated Washington State and won their 11th National Championship..... GO BLUE!
Let's run it back 2024!
Better than today.
That Auld Lang Syne march at 0:24 - 1:29 has got to be one of the boldest openings to a halftime show I have ever seen. It is so powerful and strong in sound.
Still sounds so good I love it ❤
William D Revelli was Michigan's greatest band director ever!
Not just Michigan.
Do you happen to know who arranged this rendition of our national anthem? This is actually one of the best I've heard in a while.
I believe it was arranged by the MMB's staff arranger at the time, John Stout. If I find out differently I will let you know.
@@alanmccord7745 I don't know how I didn't see this comment - thanks belatedly!
That's my band. I was a member of the trumpet section. We went all the way to the Rose Bowl that year, only losing to Stanford by a final seconds field goal. 215 strong....Monster Power!!!
Rare stuff, indeed. Eric's reign on the tower was great. YUBA and always GO BLUE!
Thanks much for this. Was in the 78-79 band, fondly remember Rose Bowl.
Fantastic show - the ovation at the end still gives me chills
I was not there!
I think my mom was in this
I was there!
Jim Mandich, SOLON OH! HOF. Pregame interview.
They should continue teaching The Victors to The TEAM!
They probably do. Can't speak for Michigan, but every year at Alabama the MDB seniors go teach the freshman football players to sing the fight song. I assume it's fairly common at the schools which particularly care about their football tradition.
Revelli is smiling on the shot at a National Championship.
God Bless Charlie Widman. Without his late touchdown to beat Chicago, then Louis Elbel wouldn’t have had the inspiration to pen The Victors.
GO BLUE!!😭❤💙💛💙💛
The University of Michigan is the best College in America 🇺🇸 God Bless that University Gooo Blueeee!!!
1:30 I found evidence of my college life. I remember this show fondly -- high stepping through "Tell Her About It" -- glory days...
This was two days before the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior.
Woke in 1970, bet that was popular. At the time.
The announcers suck. Don't want to hear their constant dribble while the band is playing!!!!!
"Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?"
who was that illiterate goon at the start who couldn’t even read off a sheet of paper? this place is a cult.
Too bad Revelli isn't still with us to have demanded perfection from the more recent teams. Seems that no one else did.
George Cavender was one great person. I was in the band and learned more about LIFE than any other professor at Michigan. He demanded excellence and showed you how to get there and what it meant. I miss him dearly.
Absolute perfection.
TMMB setting the standard for decades. A-maize-ing vid! Kind of tough to watch, without sound however. YUBA & GO BLUE
Such wonderful intonation! Loved the "basic Bach" dance moves. YUBA & GO BLUE!
A Fazenda theme
Apparently Eric Becher, who would later conduct the Michigan Marching Band, was playing trumpet in this video. He did NOT like the staccato version of the M Fanfare played above. Compare this video to the 1983 MMB pregame version also found on UA-cam. Very different interpretations of the same composition. Glenn R. received no love from the Michigan faithful.
Eric was a graduate assistant that year. It was my sophomore year and I marched second from the point in the Block M. You are correct, Eric used a lyrical singing style which we learned from George Cavender and by extension, William D. Revelli. Our “Victors” and “M Fanfare” in 1980 and 1981 were glorious. Every Director brings talent and style during their tenure. The MMB is a living organism w deep roots. I loved every minute of my four years in it.
I was there, when the crowd was only 101,001. Great victory over OSU
Go Blue
I'm sorry but it was rushed way to fast of a tempo for this song. And before u go trying to call me out i had a full ride scholarship to play for the razorback marching band along with others so i do know what im talking bout. And we did 007 show in high school with this song as one. This is not a song to rush. The tempo speeds up and slows down it don't sound right fast at all times with all that said it was a good performance great job.
