could you PLEASE do a 19th century nighttime routine?? I'm very interested in this time period and want to try experimenting with their daily routines and compare it to the results I have in our modern days, but I am not sure what exactly was done at night.... did they wash their faces or do anything specific with their hair, or use certain products? (and also, where do you get these products that you have used, or how could I make them?)

I've always loved the early 1800's empire style dresses, they were adorable and compared to many historic gowns more comfortable. Much better than hoops!

They definitely look more comfy, but they also made everyone look a little pregnant, lol. I guess while those were in style, you could keep it a secret til you were 5 or 6 months along.

Yep . I'm not a fan of the hoops either . They look way too much fuss , and it was the colonial era so I'm surprised fashion wasnt streamlined in the late 1800's - I can't imagine how the english women who decided to wear 'proper' clothing - petticoats and a boned corset and overdress and all - in the 40 degree , extremely humid temparature of India's west coast felt .

I'd wager this isn't much more time than the average lady takes today--especially if they're going to work in an office. It takes me on average about 30-40 minutes at times shower, moisturize, dry my hair, dress, apply any kind of make-up, etc The major difference is that there is an option now to be more casual in our dress (and obviously no ladies maid). I do wish I could hide my hair in a cap some days for sure. :)

Justine is not her maid. She is her friends daughter that is living with her as her ward. Lucy would dress herself, and Justine is just there to help her and be her companion. Lucy and her family are not aristocrats we're they had servants do everything! They had servants but they were paid to help with chores and household duties. Remember in Pride and Prejudice, where they had servants but they were still lower income. Mr Bennett didn't do anything really but he was still considered a gentleman. They had means, but not a lot. That's why Mrs Bennett was so desperate to get her girls married to rich men. They couldn't continue to feed and clothe these girls as they got older and she wanted them to marry well so they could also help them. That's why Lizzie's friend was desperate to marry because she was a burden on her parents and she was getting older. Most girls were married by 18. She was in her 20's. That's why Justine was staying with Lucy because her own mother might not had the means to take care of her, so Justine would be grateful and help Lucy out as much as she could. Justine could have ended up a maid working in someone else house. Maids were almost always abused by other household servants or the homeowner and worked almost 16 hours a day. This is much better for Justine.

I know some people feel bad because the niece is practically a maid, but she is better off under their roof learning a vocation rather than on the streets getting raped and murder or thrown in a brothel. At least in that home she would have access to working class men and would be able to pick a suitor from amongst them. The hug between the nieces [especially the taller niece and their aunt was so overwhelming and emotional for me that I actually watched it twice because it caught me off guard in a good way. It was very heartfelt and I wanted to join in too. I rather use those skincare products rather than the paraben laden filth available today.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't that uncommon in those days for parents to place some of their children in other homes when they couldn't afford to care for them any longer. That seems to be the case with the niece/maid living in their house. Considering the very few career opportunities women had back then, I agree that she is probably better off there than anywhere else.

We need to understand that being at the top of the pyramid of creation means that everything we do trickles down the structure, from top to bottom. When it reaches the bottom, the inanimate level of reality, from which everything grows, it changes it. If we ooze ill-will, it creates negative changes throughout the system, which manifest in increasingly extreme climatic and geological events.
In other words, when human relationships go out of balance, everything goes out of balance. When our relations become extreme, everything becomes extreme; when we become violent, everything becomes violent. Each summer, the ramifications of the linkage between our relations and our world become more extreme, until we acknowledge that everything that exists, exists in a connected, hierarchical system and that whoever is at the top determines the state of the rest of the system.
It is not as if previously, we were better people than we are today. It is simply that there were fewer people, and therefore fewer elements that exude ill will.
Also, relationships between people in the past were less toxic than they are today. While there are fewer wars today than ever, the levels of suspicion and alienation between people are skyrocketing, to the point where people can no longer trust their own family members. As a result, wars between countries are rarer than ever, but divorce rates, domestic violence, and violence in the community, are at an all-time high.
Even the internet, which we invented purportedly in order to connect people, is being used to abuse, deceive, and exploit people. The world-wide-web proves that everything we create, we use against others. When there is such a negative element in a system, and that element is at the top of the system, how can the entire system not go awry?
Therefore, if we want the weather to cool, the sea-level to drop, and the storms to subside, we must cool the fire and calm the storms between us. Mutual concern, mutual responsibility, or at least the knowledge that we are dependent on each other, are necessary in order to restore balance in our world at all levels, from the ground we walk on to the hatred in our hearts..

Most things are very well-reenacted and thought through. Just two questions (from one who mostly lives in the 18th c.)--1) My perception has always been that a lady would be seated for her maid to do her hair for her (although from what we've seen of Lucy, perhaps she just willfully does it herself, assuming no-one else can get it right...!): and 2) The bright yellow hair tie (and a couple of other very bright reds and turquoises in this and some of the other videos) look to be about two generations ahead of their time. Until analine dyes appeared later in the 19th c., those bright colors couldn't be fixed and so were either never used, or faded out very quickly (with the first wearing/washing). Madder red was never a true crimson, it always had a bit more orange in it, and had deeper brown undertones, and blues couldn't be fixed with greens except in the light aqua range; one or the other would bleed out. Such colors might even appear in magazine illustrations, but those pigments were fixed and sourced differently; they could not be replicated in fabric dyes until the 1870s or so.
Oh, and--what's that delightful piano piece? I should recognize it but I'm drawing a blank.
