I think what makes this episode so incredibly uncomfortable to me is how it all felt so uncontrollable. In most of Stine’s work, the MC will make a bad choice and it will result in a supernatural punishment. In this, it felt like there was nothing they could do to stop it. If it hadn’t been Jenny, someone else would have taken the scarecrow and the world still would have ended. Bobby and Jenny were just casually observers who couldn’t do anything. Wow! Thank you for commenting this is amazing! Thank you for making such an amazing show I’ve had a wonderful time watching and talking about it! It deserves more awards if you ask me this show was pushing some boundaries that most kid shows are too afraid to even get close too!
This reminds me so much of the 2001 Japanese movie Pulse. The end of the world isn't portrayed as this explosive humongous event, but as a sad desolate wasteland where people are just too devastated to go on and they kind of...blink out of existence. Life is too much for them seeing and feeling all this loneliness and quiet destruction so they just give up because what else can you do? The scene where the girl talks about the coldness inside her especially reminds me of Junko's scene in Pulse where she's so terrified and depressed that all she can say is "help me" over and over again.
You know, outside of being a sad/melancholy episode, I’m actually kind of surprised by the overall plot: This feels like a Goosebumps/Haunting Hour take on actual Cosmic Horror. After all, it’s about a dangerous threat that can’t be understood or reasoned with bringing about devastation to humanity, and for inexplicable purposes, and all the protagonists can truly do is just watch as it all happens. Gotta give the Haunting Hour props-it’s amazing what they were able to pull off in the show.
Yeah someone pointed out that this was the first episode where the children couldn’t at least fight back. All they could do was run until the inevitable happened
Seeing this show dive into existential horror is wild. The ending of this episode gives me the same kind of feeling I get from a Junji Ito manga. A blend of shock and emptiness.
Yeah this one's a lot more existential than the other more "traditional" horror examples you kinda get used to and come to expect in the series. And it's not like the kids here really have a chance to stop it or fight back like pretty much every other episode, the end of the world is stated to be inevitable and there's no way to really prepare for it.
@@streetwatcher_she’s a great child actress it’s so unfortunate that people were so mean to her for the roles she takes, calling her “annoying” just because she took roles that were seen as annoying. She was great in brothers
As a person who grew up with pretty bad Rapture Anxiety, this awakens some deep fears in me. Being alone at the end of the world seems so much worse than death. Just hearing you describe the ending made me cry a little.
THANK YOU for covering this episode. It’s honestly a masterpiece. Next I recommend “Lights Out” because watching this was the first time I felt genuine fear as a child. “Brush with Madness” is also super creepy, AND Dylan Minnette is in it. “Pumpkinhead”, “The Red Dress”, and of course “Dreamcatcher” freaked me out, and “Stage Fright” was one of my favorites. It was kind of creepy but mainly really funny.
Another existential episode that isn’t scary or has a bad ending that stuck with me as a kid was the episode where a lone boy is onboard on a plane with a man next to him. The boy talks with the man and they exchange their stories. The plane gradually has problems until it loses power completely. We learn that Death is on board disguised as an old woman. She is there to take away the man (I forgot if he is a ghost/wandering soul), but the man is afraid to accept death. Death causes the plane to lose power until either the man accepts death or until everyone on board dies. The boy comforts him and eventually the man accepts to go with death. The ending is a bit mysterious because of the last line. Death says “we will meet again”, the show makes it sound creepy as if the boy will die soon. But I interpreted it as a kid as “obviously they will meet again”
I watched this episode in my senior year of high school, just when I was going through my pretentious phase when I was super into poetry. I was just diving into T.S. Eliot at this time and this episode hit me at just the right time.
There was this good episode about a fun house . A guy from a broken family finds a fun house where he gets to destroy a room with a fake family arguing at a dinner table . He gets obsessed with it and can't stop thinking of it, even getting jittery and frantic when he can't go. This makes him lash out and get violent , morphing part of his face to reflect the ugly anger inside him . His sister stays by his side and saves him from himself.

Of all the episodes I watched as a child, this one has always stuck with me as the most existentially horrifying and macabre episode of them all. I find depictions of the end of the world in this vein far scarier than anything with bombs or viruses or monsters, or any other physical threat. Everything just vanishes, and it's not even made clear exactly how or why. Where did they go? It doesn't matter. They're gone. Everything is gone. It feels like it'd be better suited in a Black Mirror episode rather than a kids show made by R.L Stine... Also, during high school I ended up studying the Hollow Men poem, which is a very interesting and abstract meditation on post-WW1 europe and the treaty of Versailles ... and the only thing I could think of while reading it was, "Oh hey, this was in that one episode of The Haunting Hour!"
"This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper" The final lines of the poem the episode is based on by T.S. Elliot. These lines themselves could be a short horror story

@@kingnusmivery good show. Had amazing concepts and acting
The scarecrow always gives me Slenderman vibes
the haunting hour was basically goosebumps for teenagers
alot of the endings to these episodes disturbed me very few the haunting hour episodes have happy endings
Most of the haunting hour is just depressing 😂
How dare you…that wasn’t emo hair…that was SCENE HAIR!!
Listennn I looked up Emo hair png and it showed up 😂
@@kingnusmi 😂🤣🤣
This is a great video, I love The Haunting Hour. I think the first two seasons are better than the third and fourth seasons though. In the later seasons, it felt like they were running out of ideas and they were coming up with the craziest and most ridiculous plots. There were still some good episodes in the later seasons though. Some episodes I’d like to see you make videos about are Brush with Madness, Sick, Black Mask, The Hole, Walls, Game Over, Red Eye, and Checking Out. Those are some of my favorite episodes. Keep it up, your videos are great 👍😊
I’ll put the episodes on my list! Thank you for supporting me I really really appreciate you
Fave episode. :)
5:47 As A FNAF fan seeing that 😂
Thanks for that lol.
you're very welcome 😂
That scarecrow also played the park ranger in SPORES. And the brother was also in the episode Nightmare Inn.
What if it’s all connected 🤯 doubt it but it would be cool
Found this episode peaceful, the quiet and the wind.
I still think you should still do a video on dream catcher, I literally couldn’t finish that one when I was younger because I was so scared of it, definitely one of my favorites!
I'll probably do that one next!
Thank you for uploading.
👑👨🏾💼🤳🏽🥀💯
You should do the episode "the dead body" one of the earlier episodes and it's wild.
I’ll check it out!!
To this day my favorite episode- literally terrified me
It’s quite terrifying even as an adult
I recommend the Swarmin Norman episode
