    Just scored a 14.5” Pencil Match for my WWSD2020 from Aerospace Arms.
    I really think the enhanced features is a better choice then a standard steel 5.56 barrel.

    I just want to say that I am really regretting buying a Faxon barrel right now. I bought a 18" 308 pencil barrel last week, and I have to say: It makes no sense that their rifle length gas system is a nonstandard 15.5" (Armalite?) length instead of the 15.25" standard DPMS length, especially when their barrels are made for DPMS builds. I spent three hours hitting 6 different gun shops in town and not a single one had a 15.5" gas tube, and half of them were like "there's only three lengths though...". I ended up having to show them a picture of a standard rifle length gas tube installed in my rifle, and that it was too short before they believed me. I am currently cutting down a Rifle+1 gas tube to see if I can make something work, and that's absolutely ridiculous. It's either that, or I have to add yet another week to my build to wait for a 15.5" gas tube that seems to only be available from a couple places online. Had I known their barrels use a non-standard gas tube length, I'd probably have just spent the extra 75 bucks for a criterion barrel and deal with the extra half pound. It's extremely frustrating, and I just want you to know that.

    I don't see 20 inch pencil barrels on the website. I like that idea as the classic Stoner design. Is there a reason the pencil profile doesn't mate well with the 20 inch length?

  • @hindsight2022
    @hindsight2022 3 роки тому +5

    Wow a lot of incorrect info here . for 1 us 3gun shooters like heavier guns not lighter guns because they absorb more recoil and we dont have to carry them but for 30 seconds anyways . 2 a lightweight bcg is not going to reduce felt recoil because as you yourself mentioned you have to add a heavy buffer to compensate . thus the total mass in motion is the same .if anything felt recoil can only be eliminated by increasing overall system weight or removing excess gas fron the system .i have built and tinkered with about everything out there today including straight and pigtail gas tubes . just realize your viewers are not dummies ....

      umm...he mentioned using an adjustable gas block, right?

    • @clutchclutch13
      @clutchclutch13 2 роки тому +3

      Lighter rifles, especially rifles with less weight on the foreend, are faster to move between targets. The rifle section of most 3 gun matches are decided by splits. Other than the skill of the shooter, splits on target are affected by recoil and trigger, splits between targets are affected by total mass and type of sight. Felt recoil in a DI AR has much more to do with gas than mass. Even the lightest bolt and buffer will rock a heavy rifle if the gas too high and is bottoming out the spring and slamming the bolt and buffer against your shoulder every round.
      From your statements I do not believe you are the expert you claim to be.

      @@clutchclutch13 how many ar's do you own . I own over a dozen and have built twice as many .as well as shot thousands of rounds out of hundreds of platforms . I am not an expert but my comment already covers over gassed rifles , learn how to read

    • @clutchclutch13
      @clutchclutch13 2 роки тому +4

      @@hindsight2022 The fact that your metric for proficiency and understanding of a weapon system is how many a person owns says a lot more about you than you intended to reveal.
      I own a few. I've build 100s. I use to work in a small no-name gun shop in rural VA. My boss was the USMC armorer I was roomed with in Camp Pendleton while I was an infantryman. I would guess, somewhere between 5 years as an infantryman, going to CBQ school, and avid shooting in my civilian life that I have put more than a hundred thousand rounds downrange through AR platforms.
      See, despite being a Marine, I do know how to read. You were just wrong. If you can tune the gas system, why would you need a heavier buffer? Dwell time? Dwell time is majorly misunderstood, which is why people still buy those ridiculous pigtail gas tubes. Dwell time is a non-issue if the gas is tuned well. Why would you need to go straight to a heavier buffer? Why not a stiffer recoil spring? Because the heavy buffer proves your point?
      Here's a quick lesson. the ARs DI system isn't *really* a DI system. The gas rings on the bolt sit in the bolt carrier in such a way that the bolt basically is a piston, as 95% of the gas is already spent by the time the bolt moves back to the point where the gas key no longer seats over the gas tube. It's one of the things that makes Stoner's design so amazing, light, and cheap to produce. (It's also the reason people who laugh at ARs and say "they shit were they eat" are dumb) But for some reason, because the AR is called "Direct Impingement" people don't think about the system like a piston gun. When someone goes online and says their AK has too much recoil, everyone tells them to get an adjustable gas collar. When the same happens with an AR, people say "get a heavier buffer". It so common that it has become fudd lore, and now here we are.

    I bought a 16" stainless "match" Wylde Faxon pencil barrel. Worst barrel I have ever owned.
    It won't shoot for anything. I have tried multiple types of ammo, even moved it to a different receiver set. Didn't matter. It shoots about 2.0-2.5 in at 100yds with normal 223 or 5.56 ammo. With Federal Match 69gr, it only manages around 1.75-2.0" at 100yds. For reference my bolt 223 will shoot sub 0.5" all day with the exact same ammo.
    And those above numbers are cold. After only about 5 rounds, it is already opening up, doing good to hold under 3.0". After 10 rounds it is up to about 3.5-4.0in @100yds. 20 rounds and it is up to 4-5in. And POI moves despite their claims here.
    Overall an extremely disappointing purchase. A supposed match barrel that can barely hang with a common mass-produced mil-spec barrel. When cold . Put any string of fire through it and you might as well be shooting a flintlock.
