  • Professor Donald Berwick is a respected American health expert and paediatrician who co-founded the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 1991. He's known for promoting good health, patient safety, and efficiency in healthcare globally. Appointed by President Obama in 2010, he led the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), focusing on patient-centred care and improving healthcare delivery. Berwick prioritised evidence-based policies and transparency during his tenure, aiming to make healthcare more accessible and responsive to patients' needs. His advocacy for patient-centred care has shaped healthcare policies, emphasising quality services for all. Professor Don Berwick attended the Gathering of Kindness last year and singled out our work as one of the answers to the complex challenges facing healthcare during his closing plenary at the IHI International Forum on Quality and Safety in Melbourne in early November, and again at the Forum in Florida. Berwick's lifelong dedication to healthcare quality and innovation reflects his commitment to excellence in the field so it’s incredible to hear just how much he values our mission.
