Insight Special Hobby - a personal view

- Prague, summer 2018, Petr Herrmann from Special Hobby - who was a great host (thanks for all) - invited me to taking a look inside Special Hobby. It was such a great honour and fun to seeing how those beautiful kits were built and what steps it takes to get it all together. A dream which has become real ;-)
The founder Jiri Šilhánek gave me a brief outline of Special Hobby's history and Petr helped me with the translation.
Everybody at Special Hobby was very friendly and helpful and hopefully I didn't disturb the faszinating processes too much...
Unfortunately I had some issues with my camera due to the relatively hot environment near the machines. The film action was a spontaneausly decision (mobile phone and morrorless camera) and without considering the sound aspects.
Since I was flashed by seeing their passion and quality I wanted to make a little special clip of Special Hobby out of my impressions. I hope you like it...

Modeling is a passion that you can't compare any other hobbies. You have to be a detail person for sure.
I have been a fan of MPM/Special Hobby since the beginning, owning both the Ju-87a and Phantom. Currently building the RCAF Boston. Great video!

Again, Tom, your videos and talent in drawing in the viewer with your artistry in telling beautiful tales is impeccable and moving, inspiring, and enlightening. You give such good insight into your stories, whether it be about a modelling company, a build, or a plastic modelling man who briefly enjoys playing sprue ball fetch with his styrene canine friend who transforms into a plane. From one artist to another, you make this all so worthwhile. Thanks again for opening up a portal into your world and ideas, Tom. X

I love MPM/Special Hobby, I've collected several kits through the years. Right now I'm building Mil Mi-1 in 1/72 and I'm enjoying it very much. Thanks for your beautiful work!

Looks good, but after suffering their buchon model, I don't think I'm building another Special Hobby kit any time soon.

Es muss unbedingt mehr Firmen geben wie Special Hobby denn es gibt so viele Fahrzeuge oder Figuren die so bedeutend und interresant sind aber nie angedprochen werden

Awesome video showing up the process of manufacturing the models! One question - is that a vacuum chamber where the resin molds are being closed in?

Looks good. I saw nothing wrong in previous video. But I understand you - it is quite troublish, that it is impossible to edit ready video. All the best, especially with B-17. ;)

Não tenho condições financeiras, mais sou tão apaixonado por ,plastimodelismo, que vendo este vídeo até choro de emoção, como gostaria de ter algum kit para podê construir algo com minhas próprias mãos ,amo aviões é militaria,mais infelizmente na região do Brasil onde vivo ter acesso a kits é muito caro é eu sou muito pobre, parabéns pelo vídeo.
I enjoyed the vid and seeing their production in use. But their models, well, do they finish building them or just go so far in quality control. Unless they buy someone else's plastic and put in in their box the quality level is sub par. I purchased their Tempest, and RG's Fw-190 in 1/32nd on the same day. The Fw is far superior. I needed to purchase aftermarket parts to complete the Tempest. I purchased aftermarket parts to enhance the Fw. I like what Special Hobby attempts, but lift the level of quality and I'll buy more
The quality increased already - even the newer models are brilliant in my opinion.

There's a model somewhere of Putin riding a Bear in 1/48... It used to come with a Eduard set

For me, this brand gives me the shivers.......
I don't like it at all, and for a good reason.
Nothing fits. These kits are a disaster. Every single part has to be dry fit and filed and sanded. And many parts are too small.
I know how much time, money and effort it takes to make a mold, to make a decent model. But their products................ No thanks............
I should hope so....... Considering the (lack of) quality of these old kits, the only way WAS up, I'd say !! ;-)
I think they went the same way as ICM. Their old kits were horrible, too. the new ones are a huge leap forward. They are quite good, actually.
The quality of the new kits is outstanding! Especially the Tempest was an epiphany. Everything fits well and is designed with passion 🤓

Thanks for the detailed analysis of this great model Company - some of their kits take a bit of work , but the end result is amazing - plus the make Kits no-one else would ever make - like the Blackburn Skua in 1/48 Scale ( a gem of a kit ) or the Fiat G.55 ( a lovely kit , I have made it - see here - www.stormomagazine.com/ModelArticles/FIATG55/DavidWalker/FiatG55_1a.html
