@@solarflare9078 that's right, it's because rayman was made primarily for the atari jaguar, but as the atari jaguar sold little, ubisoft had to port the game to other platforms.
Interesting fact: Rayman was specifically made for the Jaguar. As in the original. Every other console that had it during this time was a port of the Atari version. Hence why it is so smooth running.
Fact: The Jaguar had two Motorola MC68000s but only one was used for graphics processing while the other was used for sound processing because developers at the time didn't have the knowledge to code games to properly utilize two CPUs simultaneously.

I just noticed an interesting difference between the Jaguar version and the other versions that doesn't seem to have been brought up before, I may be crazy but it seems like Betilla doesn't appear to get kidnapped in this version, why do I say this? Because I noticed that in the Jaguar version you go straight back to the map like normal after beating Space mama and Skops, whereas in the other versions of the game, there are messages with still images telling the player that Mr. Dark has kidnapped Betilla (after beating Space Mama) and Betilla asking you to help her (after beating Skops), is it possible that Ubisoft decided to add that into the other versions as a sub-plot to give the player a sense of urgency since they're so close to the end?
Evelyn Chickentalk I had never considered that aspect. That would make sense though, it'd not only actually give the player more of an incentive to win the game since they're so close and it'd make the victory more rewarding when you do finally manage to win.
Wow it looks stunning, i've always loved this games pixel art. Though the reworked music with actual instrument samples just adds so much to the atmosphere, i couldn't do without it. Looks like they later patched in the sliding mechanic, i had no idea
That 5e^$%$^$%^@5$$ jump at 3:18:08 is the reason I never made it further in this game 30 years ago !!! Fantastic to finally see how somebody made the jump !!!
I gotta say and I'm not gonna lie, but this soundtrack on jaguar is as good as the ps1 version, but had a beat into it, which made it so catchy to hear it!
As a platform character with world full of magical imagination, Rayman is head and shoulders above anything else than Mario, Sonic or Donkey Kong. First Rayman -game is criminally underrated, largely due it's simpy too difficult on later levels. Requiring sharp timing and fast responses. Rayman should have remained on first Atari Jaguar only, for exclusive mascot to tighten competition. Sequels, Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 are the best examples for incredible flawless 3D -platforming.
Today I just beat the game off an authentic cartridge and system of this game. With nearly ten years of experience in playing the Playstation and Gameboy Advance version (and not beating them) I bought a Jaguar in one auction and bought a Rayman cartridge in another on eBay. The day I got it (which was one month ago) I began working on completing every level, but deliberately get no cages. Once I finished Mr. Skops, I began looking for a guide on the internet on how to get all the cages. Barely anyone on the universe cares about this port of the game, so this video was the only source on how to get to the last level and eventually defeat Mr. Dark. Thanks for being that one person to technically make a guide on how to beat specifically the Jaguar version as other versions have cages in different places.
yes, now after watching this part again.. it is always this level that is one of the more frustrating parts of this game xD...it's such a relief to reach that check point :O
I watch this playthrough just for Moskito's Nest's theme. I don't know what it is about it. Lol what I liked better about the PSX version is how the second stage of Moskito's Nest doesn't have music, just the jungle sounds. Really ads to the atmosphere. As someone already said, it's great quality for an actual Jag. Thanks, Evelyn!
thank you :D you're welcome ^^...I always wanted to make a re-do of my old gameplay and I'm glad the people like my video :3... yeah, the different versions of the game have different sounds and music tracks :) and it is very interesting in my opinion :)..
13:21 you can see the ‘Tings’ making up the code 1364 for the hidden minigame... why does every report online say you get this code after beating Mr Dark but nowhere makes any mention of the code being on this level made up of the ‘Tings’?
ikr? well my theory is that you "officially" get handed the code by the game in the credits at the end.. hence why all online articles about this version of the game tell you you get it at the end of the game... the Tings were supposed to be an easteregg, which at the time the internet wasnt really a thing, and platforms on the internet were people could share their experience with games they played through... back then in the 90s it was rather common to buy actual books with game solutions or you had to talk with real people at school or somewhere else where you could share your experience and/or game solutions... so.. people had to figure it out themselves what these Ting numbers mean. Sure, if you look at the atari jaguar controller you see a number pad... maybe people thought if they pressed these numbers in-game that they would get a power up or more life (back then when the game was still new, this would have been a plausible thought, in my opinion anyways).. i myself wondered what it was about until i finished the game :) i wondered if it was some kind of cheat code, and i played lots of rayman games at that point haha the numbers 1364 could have also been referring to the year 1364 when for example the battle of cocherel in france took place (no i made that reason up.. but sometimes its interesting to look up random past years and see what was going on in the world... but a reference to a battle would have been almost fitting to the game, as you just beat the mosquito and you are on the way to beat the next one)... 1364 could be a postcode too... or maybe the PIN to ubisofts bank account... i hope you get the point, that this number could have been anything before you beaten the game... so you basically really just get the knowledge needed to crack the code at the end of the game.. when mr dark is beaten.
I find it weird how the mini Rayman in the Jaguar version is properly lined-up, while in every other version mini Rayman's hair, body, and head are slightly misaligned. I don't understand why they didn't see that? Another thing I found weird is the disappearing clouds don't open their eyes in every other version of this game. On another note the sound effects in the Jag version are really good, you can really feel the impact when Rayman punches something, and I prefer the Jag's version of the helicopter sound effect over the loud and obnoxious one they used in every other version.
+Anon Overseer I know that, and I won't lose sleep over the PS1 version not having the Jag sound effects and maybe the cloud sprites. I'm just a bit OCD when it comes to the mini Rayman sprites. I can understand for the PS1 version it could of been a programming mistake, but HOW did they not noticed this after the third time they ported this game! They ported this game like a dozen times, and they STILL didn't fix it! AND IT BUGS THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!
+Blank Blank I agree (it's also the only one I own), as it's the one that has the most content (by one level or so), and fixed a lot of somewhat frame perfect jumps, but due to PCs of the time being 16-bit (as opposed to 32-bit). It's the second least detailed (I still don't understand why it doesn't have the full soundtrack though, because unless if I'm mistaken PC CDs are the same as PS1 CDs). Although graphically the Saturn version is my favorite. I also wonder why no one has tried remaking the Rayman Trilogy (official or fan made)? I'd love to see Rayman 1 with hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds, or Rayman 2 with updated models and with more user friendly controller support for PC (or Ubisoft could port Rayman Revolution to modern consoles), and Rayman 3 with... Well the game's already good enough as is except for the lip syncing during cut-scenes. Anyway back on topic. The reason why I used the PS1 version was because it was the second version of the game (even though it came out first), and it's the one Ubisoft used the most when porting the game to multiple consoles... Well until they ported it to PC Then they just used that one (or Rayman Forever) for every other port (except for the PlayStation Classics version, but that's just emulation). (ó~ò) I hope you're not using your iPod/iPhone to read this.
lol yes, that was exactly my reaction when I first heard that the Jaguar version is the original version :D... while PC and PS1 were released in september (i think), the Jaguar Version got released a week before the other two versions... so. it's not that much of a difference but still, this i really interesting and amazing :D
Evelyn Chickentalk the Jaguar version is also a cleaned up late beta, which is why it has no sliding mechanics, as on the Jaguar version the engine never was updated to support the sliding from PSX/DOS
Looks incredibly smooth, but the sounds were a lot more rudimentary on the Jaguar. The digital audio from the Playstation (and subsequent versions) is a lot better in my opinion. But cool to hear a chiptune soundtrack. Nice touch
Actually this is the way Rayman should be played, it originally was meant for Atari Jaguar but later got ported to other platforms. I have played the Ps1 version and the PC version, and i would love to play the Jaguar version, gotta get myself a Jaguar first tough, but those are damn expensive.
I don't think i could go wrong with Rayman, but i do know or atleast in my opinion there are not that many good games for Atari jaguar, but i am some sort of collector/retrogamer. So i want it anyway.
@@76HENDRIK10 Jaguar -> SCART RGB to HDMI converter -> HDMI Splitter -> monitor + HDMI capture card to record it. Getting a SCART RGB to HDMI converter that didn't suck or cost a fortune was the hard part.
Evelyn Chickentalk in ps1 version and later return at map cartel is removed to avoid skip skops,in this version tecnically after collect all electons if not save at photographer player can die back at start of the level and use cartel to back at map.
Oh wow; even with the worse sound chip, Mr. Sax telegraphs his attacks much more clearly here than in other versions. There are no difference between the bomb notes and the 6-mini-notes in appearance, but here he makes a more high-pitched sound when he does the bomb note. They could've easily done that for the proper saxophone-sound too.
Although the midi-style music sounds a bit lifeless compared to the PS1 version... I actually prefer some of the music choices, as well as the fact there isn't an obvious pause because the console is loading a new track; the music actually does loop in this. I prefer the punchier bass and use of drums in the final boss music too, along with a brief classical moment at the loop.
The Jaguar evidently had a FM chip, so calling this MIDI audio isn't exactly right. The audio here would be most similar to a Adlib OPL chip; MIDI can be widely varied and often gets a bad rap.
Hey I know you you are the UA-camr who does the gameplay of the Rayman games on PC right I just want to thank you for playing the Atari Jaguar version of Rayman in 7 years so thank you
Seeing this makes you realize how weird the pc version looks in comparison. Everything is so smooth, platforms fall instantly, end level animation is instant, rayman's hair doesn't look like a crappy wig. But yeah, some aspects make it look like a beta version. And the music? Well, I'm in love with the pc's version soundtrack, so this one's a no go
I always thought the clouds were hands as a kid. I didn't know they were Rayman face clouds with eyes lol. I guess I've never seen this game look so clear before.

..You're telling me.. the mosquito level has a fast attack.. Band Land never had slippery platforms.. and the game was supposed to run THIS fast and smoothly!? BRUH
The only issue with the video’s image is the colors (could be fixed with some color editing), but it’s razor sharp otherwise! Didn’t know the Jaguar could have such clear output
wait what, are u seriously tellin me that in this version Rayman wasnt sliding down the sweet hill and riding up the sweet hill on the pan and wasnt chased by his own clone in candy land? :D
i used to play the game a lot back then :).. in the beginning i needed to use some internet guides to help me playing this game through.. but after 5 times of playing the game i had all spots memorized... the only tricky part about this is that every rayman 1 version only has similar spots but not really the same spots where they hide the cages..then i stopped playing the game for a long time ..and i noticed in my most recent playthrough that i was not able to find them all.. i was considering to cheat my way to the final level... but then decided against it.. but well.. that's another story :)
this would have been awesome o.o...actually a great idea! :O... but I guess the Atari Jaguar was already "dead" by then because of the other consoles that were released a few years earlier (than Rayman 2)... PS1, N64, Sega Dreamcast and so on :B
Yeah, like +technology4617 said, the colours are completely fucked up here and you should definitely get a better upscaler. But otherwise, it's nice to see a 60FPS, otherwise pretty good quality recording of the Jaguar version! They're pretty much nonexistent.
+Adsolution If you're going to pay for a better upscaler for us, go ahead. Until then, it's pointless for us to throw any more money at the problem than we did (20eur for a HDCVT HDV-8S), since the Jaguar is the only of our old consoles not supporting component output, and we'd like to avoid S-Video if possible. As for the colors being "fucked up", they're simply oversaturated because I (Bambooz) didn't have the needed resistors on hand for modifying the Atari RGB SCART cable in time. The image is much better (less oversaturation, contrast not set to "crush all the blacks!!!11") with a RGB Signal from a PS1. PS: UA-cams re-encoding of uploaded material doesn't help either. There's a very noticeable quality loss compared to the 14GB file I uploaded. Trying to redownload this video from YT in 720p60, I end up with just a 5.4GB file.. what the hell..
+Evelyn Chickentalk This particular upscaler creates a distinct blueshift, which might also cause blues/violets to look oversaturated). I've had experience with it, Technology has experience with it, and all other UA-cam videos using this upscaler have the issue. If there are oversaturation issues occurring with the Jaguar specifically, they can't be too prominent since the video, when I slotted it into a colour correction profile I made for this upscaler previously, looks more-or-less correct. And alright, fair enough. Just in case you're ever interested in getting a pretty cheap but good upscaler, check out the iScan VP30 (they're only around $100).

Gotta say, even though I sort of hate the sliding mechanics at times, seeing how slow the first screen of Allegro Presto was is... not so fun
I never seen these levels in Candy Chateau before, surprised that it never made it to the other ports.
ikr
I just noticed an interesting difference between the Jaguar version and the other versions that doesn't seem to have been brought up before, I may be crazy but it seems like Betilla doesn't appear to get kidnapped in this version, why do I say this? Because I noticed that in the Jaguar version you go straight back to the map like normal after beating Space mama and Skops, whereas in the other versions of the game, there are messages with still images telling the player that Mr. Dark has kidnapped Betilla (after beating Space Mama) and Betilla asking you to help her (after beating Skops), is it possible that Ubisoft decided to add that into the other versions as a sub-plot to give the player a sense of urgency since they're so close to the end?
to be honest, I never noticed that! O_O...maybe they added it to make the final-showdown thrilling for the player :O
Evelyn Chickentalk I had never considered that aspect. That would make sense though, it'd not only actually give the player more of an incentive to win the game since they're so close and it'd make the victory more rewarding when you do finally manage to win.
Maybe they wanted to make a reference to super Mario bros 3 (only the people who played it Will understand)
@@pelusathedeveloper Eh, I'll count it as more a coincidence than something intentional
Wow it looks stunning, i've always loved this games pixel art.
Though the reworked music with actual instrument samples just adds so much to the atmosphere, i couldn't do without it.
Looks like they later patched in the sliding mechanic, i had no idea
Welcome to the World of Rayman, where a moskito has more hit points than a Giant Sax, a Stone-made giant guy and a Giant Scorpion
Interesting version, I'd love to play it myself someday. Great video!
thanks a lot :)
That 5e^$%$^$%^@5$$ jump at 3:18:08 is the reason I never made it further in this game 30 years ago !!! Fantastic to finally see how somebody made the jump !!!
I like how Rayman Redemption also has music from this version Rayman 1.
i must try rayman redemption maybe xD
First version of the Rayman game.
I gotta say and I'm not gonna lie, but this soundtrack on jaguar is as good as the ps1 version, but had a beat into it, which made it so catchy to hear it!
You must be high, it's nowhere near as good as the PS1 version.
5:01:50. That's something skylar from cybermorph would say whenever you pick up a pod
Yes, there is Game Boy Color version that is quite playable, also.
But Jaguar has the best version of first Rayman.
It's not the same without the "YEAH!!!!!" after finishing a level.
so true... or with the laughing sound at the end
Today I just beat the game off an authentic cartridge and system of this game. With nearly ten years of experience in playing the Playstation and Gameboy Advance version
(and not beating them) I bought a Jaguar in one auction and bought a Rayman cartridge in another on eBay.
Man, it's like the equivalent of a souped up SNES version of the game.
Well, this WAS going to be a SNES CD title before the idea was canned
There was even an prototype leaked
This brings back so much memories
2:58:34 I could feel the frustration at that part, but will admit I cheered some when you finally reached the photographer!
yes, now after watching this part again.. it is always this level that is one of the more frustrating parts of this game xD...it's such a relief to reach that check point :O

It looks a lot cleaner than the other ports on PS1 and Saturn.
***** that's what I meant.
Sure, if you look at the atari jaguar controller you see a number pad... maybe people thought if they pressed these numbers in-game that they would get a power up or more life (back then when the game was still new, this would have been a plausible thought, in my opinion anyways).. i myself wondered what it was about until i finished the game :)
i wondered if it was some kind of cheat code, and i played lots of rayman games at that point haha
the numbers 1364 could have also been referring to the year 1364 when for example the battle of cocherel in france took place (no i made that reason up.. but sometimes its interesting to look up random past years and see what was going on in the world... but a reference to a battle would have been almost fitting to the game, as you just beat the mosquito and you are on the way to beat the next one)...
On another note the sound effects in the Jag version are really good, you can really feel the impact when Rayman punches something, and I prefer the Jag's version of the helicopter sound effect over the loud and obnoxious one they used in every other version.
thepuzzlemaster64 Well, THIS is the original version.
+Anon Overseer
I know that, and I won't lose sleep over the PS1 version not having the Jag sound effects and maybe the cloud sprites. I'm just a bit OCD when it comes to the mini Rayman sprites. I can understand for the PS1 version it could of been a programming mistake, but HOW did they not noticed this after the third time they ported this game! They ported this game like a dozen times, and they STILL didn't fix it! AND IT BUGS THE HELL OUT OF ME!!!
thepuzzlemaster64 PC version is better than the PS1 version
+Blank Blank
I agree (it's also the only one I own), as it's the one that has the most content (by one level or so), and fixed a lot of somewhat frame perfect jumps, but due to PCs of the time being 16-bit (as opposed to 32-bit).
My biggest problem is that every other port has SUPER pixilated sprites.
Second and Third and Fourth and Fifth and... nah, six is a stupid number :V
Anyway, Happy happy Birthday, Channel-Chaaan! :la:
+Eamdray Sny thanks a lot my friend! :la:
P.S.:

Looks beautiful for a jaguar game!
I just recently learned this game was originally designed for the Jaguar, I always thought it was originally a pc/ps one game. Crazy!
lol yes, that was exactly my reaction when I first heard that the Jaguar version is the original version :D... while PC and PS1 were released in september (i think), the Jaguar Version got released a week before the other two versions... so. it's not that much of a difference but still, this i really interesting and amazing :D
Evelyn Chickentalk the Jaguar version is also a cleaned up late beta, which is why it has no sliding mechanics, as on the Jaguar version the engine never was updated to support the sliding from PSX/DOS
So, the definitve version of Rayman is the later versions then, since this is techincally a cleaned up beta.
Looks incredibly smooth, but the sounds were a lot more rudimentary on the Jaguar. The digital audio from the Playstation (and subsequent versions) is a lot better in my opinion. But cool to hear a chiptune soundtrack. Nice touch
Great video my friend i will be checking out your other videos for sure :)
+Retro Hawk okay :D... thanks ^^
I feel like it's harder to grab onto ledges in this version
Much harder!
Best version of the game for sure
true :) i like the physics of the atari jaguar Version.. its something else.. compared to all other versions
Actually this is the way Rayman should be played, it originally was meant for Atari Jaguar but later got ported to other platforms. I have played the Ps1 version and the PC version, and i would love to play the Jaguar version, gotta get myself a Jaguar first tough, but those are damn expensive.
what about testing the version with the emulator first before purchasing in a real Atari Jaguar? :P maybe you would regret it afterwards o.o
I don't think i could go wrong with Rayman, but i do know or atleast in my opinion there are not that many good games for Atari jaguar, but i am some sort of collector/retrogamer. So i want it anyway.
I know there are not that many good games for the Atari Jaguar :P...that's why I can recommend you to test the games on a Jaguar emulator first
Rayman, Iron Soldier, Doom, Tempest 2000, Defender 2000, Alien vs Predator, Pitfall are good games.
Leopold1977 Pitfall on Jaguar is not too good, as the frame rate is 30 compared to the silky smooth 60FPS (and 320x224) of the Genesis and SEGA/MEGACD
I wish Rayman can join the Olympics.
In Tokyo? Nah, he should play in 2024 Paris
The lack of "YEAH" is disturbing
very
in the dsiware version, which was the first version I played, it just goes *YEAH* with absolutely nothing else
@@scr0ngle108 Yeah like the PC version, if we compare the Level Design from all Rayman games the DSiware seems based on the PC version.

Hey, it's a new one! No messed up sound this time.

Wow In mr skops stalactites back at map cartel is present in this version and skops battle can be skipped
the skops battle can be skipped? :O.. I just know that you can skip Mr.Sax' battle :)
Glitch Walker You might be interesting in the PC OST. It doesn’t have to stop and play a new track
The Jaguar evidently had a FM chip, so calling this MIDI audio isn't exactly right. The audio here would be most similar to a Adlib OPL chip; MIDI can be widely varied and often gets a bad rap.
@@A2Adam It doesn't even have an FM chip.
The Jaguar contains 2 Motorola 68000s, and one of them is used for audio. Everything is made in software
I dont think you know what midi means.
They should have kept this music in the PlayStation version. It sounds like an old school basketball jam 😆
Hey I know you you are the UA-camr who does the gameplay of the Rayman games on PC right I just want to thank you for playing the Atari Jaguar version of Rayman in 7 years so thank you
you are welcome :).. my gameplays were not always on PC, but it's definitely the easiest to record... thanka for your comment :)
3:12:12 Save of the Motherfluffing Year! :O
One of the best games for the Jaguar alongside Skyhammer, Zero 5, & Battlesphere :D. Greetings from USA!
Was Rayman 1 perhaps the prettiest game to come out on the Atari Jaguar? The graphics are, saturation aside, pretty much the same.
Sounds like an old DOS game, but what did you expect? It's a cartridge...
There is a DOS version of this game
I love the hard rocks music
Damn there's some drastic differences in this version
Seeing this makes you realize how weird the pc version looks in comparison.
Everything is so smooth, platforms fall instantly, end level animation is instant, rayman's hair doesn't look like a crappy wig.
But yeah, some aspects make it look like a beta version.
And the music? Well, I'm in love with the pc's version soundtrack, so this one's a no go
The music themed levels looks much more easier but slower in comparison to the newer versions, without those slippery tracks
The music in the blue mountains is so much better
I had this game for my ATARI Jaguar. This game is so beautiful but I never got past the angry bee. It was just too hard for me. D:
Really weird seeing these levels with no sliding mechanics. This almost feels like a beta version. Still insane quality for the Jaguar.
I always thought the clouds were hands as a kid. I didn't know they were Rayman face clouds with eyes lol. I guess I've never seen this game look so clear before.

How long did it take you to generally memorize where every cage is? Often when I do a playthru I admittedly use the cheat upon defeating Mr. Skops.
i used to play the game a lot back then :).. in the beginning i needed to use some internet guides to help me playing this game through.. but after 5 times of playing the game i had all spots memorized... the only tricky part about this is that every rayman 1 version only has similar spots but not really the same spots where they hide the cages..then i stopped playing the game for a long time ..and i noticed in my most recent playthrough that i was not able to find them all.. i was considering to cheat my way to the final level... but then decided against it.. but well.. that's another story :)
Interesting that there is an additional level in the candy world in this version.
Not even 5 minutes in, and I already know why this didn’t do well against the Saturn, psone and the n64
Rayman Origins make more sense now.
despite the sound limitations and the slow paced levels flow, the graphics seems smoother and less pixelated than the newer versions
Newer PS1 was the first version.
@@RobertK1993 No, actually the Jaguar version came first.

this would have been awesome o.o...actually a great idea! :O... but I guess the Atari Jaguar was already "dead" by then because of the other consoles that were released a few years earlier (than Rayman 2)... PS1, N64, Sega Dreamcast and so on :B
Evelyn Chickentalk shame
Did they seriously make it so in this version of the game when you get hit you lose your gold punch ability? That's brutal man..
So... Not all Atari Jaguar games are bad eh?
This is where Rayman all began.
