    An electrician once told me that if you have cables outside then place a loop in the cable lower than the device. So when it rains the water will drip off the bottom of the loop and not travel down the cable to inside. Hope that makes sense.
    Love the tankard, beautiful. Beer really does taste better in a glass.
    Completely out did yourself with the opening. I totally laughed out loud. That chair in the boat, brilliant.

    Your 1st meal done on the stove looks better than my 1st one, the local store didn't have much, so it ended up being bacon sandwiches.

    I've cooked many a pot of stew or soup on my stove, and boiled a few cups of tea too. You may kniw this but the best way to clean the stove door glass is to wet some newspaper/rag and dip it to the ash and clean as you would a window.
    Works every time. No need for oven cleaner as some people use. Great vlog as usual.

    if you can feed the tv coax cable down the center of the pipe, then mount the antenna to the top/side of the pipe, then mount the wifi antenna below the tv unit so as not to throw interference from one to the other, drill the access hole on a downward angle to feed its cable down the center of the pipe also, then make or get a metal "swivel" at the bottom of the pipe to mount it to the top of the side gunnel with the cable access through the top of the gunnel into the interior of the boat. have a large wing nut on the swivel so that when you need to lower the pipe you can loosen the swivel and lower the mast flush with the side gunnel, you'd only have to come up with an upper support to hold the mast in the upright position (maybe a cradle for the pipe when it's lying down to hold it in place) ...just a thought. You're doing fine, good luck. enjoying your videos!

    Hi. How about trying Ash Pan Jacket Potatoes.
    Using tin foil. Pop your potato on the foil rub a little oil on and than sprinkle with salt and pepper. Wrap up tightly in the foil. No gaps etc. Place in your ash pan. Ash will fall and cover potatoes. The potato will slowly cook. Does take a while. Can’t really remember how long. But probably a good few hours etc. Heat your beans etc on top. X

    @v8dfa 3 роки тому +1

    You could drill a hole the size of the thickness of the aerial bracket through the pipe, an inch or so down from the top, then cut a slot from the top down to meat the hole you just drilled. Then bend the pipe out to make two flat tabs to fit either side of the aerial bracket and bolt through.

    If you could mount your comms pole near a window/door, you could put the 4G antanna and the wifi access point both on the pole. Then the wifi can be seen inside the boat through the door/window. Then the only connection you need to make each time you put the mast up, is the power. Far easier to arrange than an RF connector. Oh and the TV antenna, but that is simple enough.

  • @DEmma1972
    @DEmma1972 3 роки тому +2

    Shaving the mount was my 1st thought but then you mentioned that it was hollow plastic. If you cut into the plastic it will lose its strength, however I would then suggest you fill the hollow plastic with milliput. If you can also provide the depth needed for the other bracket one of your followers may 3d print 1 for you. Lamb looked great

  • @alipuk

    You are getting more elaborate with your intros and they are making me chuckle!
    I assume the comms mast will be mounted on the stern of the boat. You have to make the poIe easy to remove for travel. Perhaps a quick disconnect on the boat side would allow for complete removal.
    I would mount as you said TV at the top and 4g antenna below it. You should make sure the top of the pole has a cover and the wires can be simply taped to the pole rather than have them travel internally. It also helps prevent water ingress inside the pole.

    nice to see you enjoying the fire cooking, i did that myself at first but noticed that the corner of the top plate of the fire started to lift away from the box as the bottom of the pan must have been affecting it, it did take a couple of years for this to happen so i got a cast iron trivet and the problem went away. it takes longer to cook stuff but slow cooking does taste good, just needs a little extra planning.

    shave down the TV antenna mate it would look way better, and squish (or form if you want to be posh) the Ali tube at the top with a vice (med size basic vice will do it) if you can get access to one less to trim off the TV antenna, single self tapper screw or two, jobs a golden and it can still be taken apart easy, just my thoughts tho, we all like to put our own style on our boats and as long as it works its correct. I am sure you have but make sure the distance between the components on the mast don't fight with each other, sometimes they need little or a shockingly large distance to prevent interference. getting there now pal and its looking peachy : D (ps jelly of the lister engine you got, they deffo give the loudest (what shouldn't be but is) a relaxing noise.

    For the tv aerial, can you cut a slot/notch into the top of the pole then cross drill to bolt it through.
    Or you might be able to squash the pipe flatter if you can borrow a vice, I can’t tell if that would fit.
    The process for slotting (if I were doing it) would be to squash the pipe until the ID matches the width of the aerial stub, then cut down the front and back (tighter radii) before meeting those cuts perpendicularly to leave two flat tabs ready foe drilling.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt

      Yes I agree to cutting a slot. Be careful if your going to squash the tube as it may crack. Don't trim the plastic base in the antenna as the molding is more than likely hollow and would make it weak and make a lovely entrance for spiders and bugs into the housing, not to mention damp

    You can always wrap stuff in a couple of layers of tinfoil and cook it in the embers at the front of the fire. Potatoes, onions and general veg will provide the water for a good cooking environment and Sausages, beacon or minced meat will provide some oil or you can add some butter/oil. Add some seasoning and cook for about 1hr may be less, may need to experiment with timings a bit and extract using your fire gloves 👍 Used to do this in scouts on camp 😊. Like the idea of a Dutch oven, you could perhaps bake some bread, you can get pre-prepared bread mixes from most supermarkets, just add some salt and water and get kneading

    @robg3545 3 роки тому +1

    Another superb intro there! Good that you got an alu mast, as ferrous metal affects antennas. Maybe find a bit of plastic or plumbing pipe narrow enough to sit down 6" into the top of the mast and then bolt the TV aerial to that, so it could then sit on the very top.
    Remember a cable 'drip loop' just before the hole in the outer bulkhead, leave a decent loop of slack in the cable for when you move the mast and deburr any cable holes you drill in the mast. (Beware of painting the antenna covers as some paints contain conductive pigments). Check out Foxes Afloat vlog 42.

      The material does not actually matter. If it conducts, then it will affect the antennas. The 4G is probably directional anyway and that will certainly be radiating/receiving away from the mast. So the mast will not affect it. The TV antenna is probably going to be pretty omnidirectional and in practice not that affected by the mast, if it is mounted right at the top.

    • @robg3545

      James, I would recommend running the cables in metal conduit. Especially if you are planning on running them outside. This will minimize interference and protect the cables from lines, low hanging branches. Vandalism, and weather. It can be painted to protect it from corrosion as well as blending it in with the rest of the boat.
      If you are mounting to the top of your boat, I guess you will need a hinge to lay it down to cruise, and not interfere with lines while mooring or in locks. Bears thinking about.

      A variation on that: make a round plug of sturdy (preferably UV resistant) plastic, that fits into the top of the pole, and shape it to imitate the flat vertical part of the tv aerial bracket, then use the provided bolt. You need to plug the mast top anyway if the bottom is sealed (eg) by fitting to a magnet. Water getting in and freezing can split the tube. This happened to a ham radio mast I had. (it was larger, though - 2").

    Love the opening shot James. Very picturesque. It was making me feel cold seeing you trampling through that snow. James, regards the TV antenna, cut down the existing bracket and fix that into the pole, then screw the antenna on as normal. Using this method should not invalidate any guarantee.
    Just a thought, why not put the lamb in foil and put it in the fire for a bit, or even lay some foil on the top of the stove in a moulded tray shape, and cook that way? Quiker heat transfer? ;-) BTW, onions just cooked in the fire, as they come, are lovely with some bread and butter, especially the black burnt bits from the outside. Magnetic is the key here, so if you run into something, ( like a bridge) than it just tips over and it still sticks (ie: savable), doesn't fall into the drink or get skueshed, or smooshed. Easily removable, or relocatable if needed in a pinch. Plus if you need to rotate it for signal, no adjusting screw just give a twist. You have already experienced the strength of the magnet world.
    Hence sticking it to it...... CHEERS.

    Don't cut the aerial casing,you may compromise the waterproofing.can you not slot the ally pipe and bolt through it.failing that your idea if modifying the clamp bracket would be better.

    I have a extendable flag pole I bought off Amazon. It has sections that extent and store inside each other and just twist to lock out. The Pointing aerial is good but I found it not very good at low level. Higher the better. I bought a different one that is loads better...
