James, I would like you to realise that your channel is as much about you as well as what and how you are doing on the build. In fact, I would be bold enough to say that people watch your channel and subscribe because of who you are more so than the build aspects. You have this down to earth, humble and respectful way of presenting things that makes it feel as if we were mates having a quiet pint and helping each other out. So I wouldn't worry about any potential transition problems to providing content that is a natural progression of your journey.
We live vicariously through your troubles and successes. I'm just jealous at your calm in the face of occasional adversity Think you need a TV show - perhaps a guest slot on Top Gear
I spent years designing telly for BBCtv and others. I am no performer, but you are. You have an instinct for it. Even your direction; the framing and the subtle device of locking off the camera on a moored boat. This gives the POV a lilting, gently rocking perspective, appropriate to the subject. Difficult to believe you are not a professional. I am sure you will grow your audience, even making toast!
Wow - there’s a compliment - thank you. I really do enjoy thinking about the shots etc but there’s not enough time to devote to making it all look and sound great - 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Brilliant. Morning cup of tea and a bourbon. Second lashing. Missus says "haven't you watched him already today" Me: "Yeah" Missus "What bit is he doing now?" Me: "Nothing. He's talking about doing it" Missus: that thing with her eyes.
Good to see you taking a moment. You're already well in to your canal life and what better apprenticeship than a boatyard as you've already found. You'll never be finished, but that's life. Great audio. Cheers.
James, I am a man of few words (mainly because I'm not all that clever), but you are an inspiration and you have and are doing great my friend :-) Continued good luck :-)
Yours is the first channel I've "joined/sponsored", the first one I've wanted to so much so that I actually did it, thank you so much for putting it at an achievable rate. I know other people moan at more "personal" videos, but I really like getting to know peoples stories and what has led them to moving onto a boat, because it isn't a "traditional" way of life. Good on you mate for doing something that you want and I really look forward to seeing how things progress.
Hi James, I think it is clear from the amount of Amazon traffic you have been generating that people, (including myself), have seen what you have been looking to achieve and wanted to contribute. It is not just about the boat but about how you have gone about things, I mean all that work and then to get a video out most days as well... that is astonishing! for a one man band. I think it is clear from the vlogs that you are a genuine guy just trying to build a home for himself, a space where you can spend quality time and experiences with your kids, that's not only inspirational in these challenging times but also worth investing in. Hence I have hit the join button, I am sure many others will do as well and I look forward to following the journey. I plan to do a canal holiday this year, stage one in my aim to exit the rat race in the next 5 - 6 years and retire early to the cut. In the meantime, I will carry on with the day job and take inspiration where I can from channels such as yours that there are adventures to be had out there on the waterways of Britain 😊
What a lovely thing to say and I really appreciate that’s and your support too as you know. Hopefully you thought the sound was better today too. Your plan sounds like a damn good one - this last year has all shown us that we can carry on and even thrive during hard times. I know I’ll be seeing you on the cut one day - my boat or yours - who knows !! Thank you Will 👍🏼
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Indeed, that would be good and an occasion for a beer or two 👍 As for the sound, it is what it is, keep exploring the wireless stuff, you have two systems to experiment with now when you get some spare time 😊. Once you get a good, unmetered wireless connection, (unlimited data plan), and can move to editing on a Laptop rather than direct on your phone, perhaps we can setup a MS Teams meeting and I could provide some software and basic video editing training? I did note that there is at least one other person with skills in that area on the channel or you could reach out to some of your fellow narrow boating youtubers.
I'm late to the party and only found you recently (followed from Foxes Afloat) and I'm hooked ! Binge watching a few episodes every night and trying not to sneak a peek at how far you've got with the restoration.
It is a joy to watch you whether it’s your “build” activities or simply “living” on the boat. I so hope that we will be able to live our dream of a long, long cruise someday. Need to do it soon before I get too old. Lol. I look forward to the new videos also. x
Morning James. What a lovely way to explain what your future plans are 👍🏻 I’m personally so please I came across your channel and have joined your journey on The Narrowboat that James built 🤣 Its given me loads of valued entertainment while I’ve been parked up in my lorry of an evening. Take care buddy cheers Stevie 😎
Your personality and tenacity shine through, I reckon we all want to see you succeed with this and love being on the "ride" with you. Thank you for doing this, a blessing during this winter and lockdown. Take care.
Hi James I just viewed a 50ft springer in Yorkshire this Saturday. Its a wreck but we have put an offer in and waiting to see tomorrow what they say. Your vloggs have been inspiring and enjoyable to watch. What gave me a great feeling was I had only been in the yard 5mins and a guy approached us we ended up being there for an hour chatting about the pros and cons, turned out hes a welder who was doing his own boat. I dont have endless pots of money so hopefully I could go the same route as you. Its been my dream for a long time to do it. My skill set is probably about the same as yours but if I don't try I will never know and in 10 years I will be probably too old. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.
That’s the spirit - that and some time - you’ll get there. That guy is everywhere on the canal network - everyone will help you. Stay in touch - hope you get it.
We just got our boat sorted and will be back in the UK in 3 weeks and on it. Your videos have given me a lot of insight into stuff I know I'll need to know once I am n the boat and given me a bit of inspiration to change a few things once on it. You must be pretty excited to get it in the water now!
Boats are never finished, there’s always something to do or something to redo because you’ll realise after living on and using the boat for awhile there’s a better or different way to do / have something.
James, To share your journey, it has been a godsend through lockdown, Its gave us an escape from the rigmarole of work, home and sleep. Anything to support the channel mate you got my vote. Pleasure to hit the join button and look forward to the future adventures!
I remember going through that tunnel in an Inflatable. Mind you it was about 50 years ago !. Top Catching Up and loved the Paint It Black acoustic version by James Senior :-)
What a great memory that is!!! I’m bringing an inflatable up here soon - can’t believe I haven’t done it sooner! I’ve got one with aluminium floors - seems like a sunseeker compared to that boat of Paul’s !!!

Hi Jame, I don’t believe it. You were using you grinder again without your goggles on and no guard and the extension lead still coiled up on the reel, carry on like that and you won’t see the end of the tunnel you’ll be blind or even bleed to death. But look on the bright side you’ll have it on video for the Health And Safety guys for their enquiry. 👍
i always think this about youtube. People make content and put it up for our viewing pleasure, costs me nothing, it's free.... so you can do what ever you want! Looking forward to crane day and beyond
Life is just a series of hurdles to overcome, James. It's how you deal with them that sorts out the men from the boys. The major work is behind you now, and I'm sure she'll be ready for full time living before the kids break up for summer. Look forward to pootling along the cut with you in the years ahead... As for the Patreon or Join thing, I'll be giving that a miss. For any UA-camrs that I appreciate, I prefer to reward them with a gift, as you have noticed. ;o) God bless her, and all who sail in her.
James - in my imagination that little dingy you've borrowed gets stored in the lift-up bow of your narrowboat, in a James Bond styley. I can just see you stealing along the cut, the bow stealthily opening and you creeping out to raid, well who knows what or who, presumably one of those £100,000 gin palaces on the upper Thames. Good luck with the craning this week.
There’s no stealth with that dinghy ! The 2stroke outboard sounds like a motorbike and it keep cutting out so I need to stand up wobbling all over the place to use the pull cord !! Cheers 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
