  • NOTICE: In July 2021 the channel name changed from HamCuredSmoke
    To Ham Radio A2Z. All of the earlier videos (like this one) are still available.
    We are continuing to pick up straggler subjects that I've glossed over or skipped. This time it's a large one. I had skipped over CW operation completely back in section 4 of the manual. So I've connected a CW paddle to the rig and we're going to go back and cover CW operation.

    Thank you so much. When I read the manual alone, I'm still in a fog about what they mean. I have been out of the hobby for several years. Everything is new again. Your videos are priceless for anyone owning the IC 7300.

    THANKS SO MUCH TOM !!! I have had my 7300 for about 2 years now. Recently I have decided to (re)learn Morse Code. This time I went for the Farnsworth Method and find that approach to be a wise choice for me.
    So............ Now to start using CW with the 7300.... I am finding that since I am new to CW I am finding that my usual approach to the 7300 is to just touch and go. Um .. with CW ops not so much for me.
    I configured a straight key to work fine with the rig but now need to learn about the best settings. I started with this video and as is usual with your videos, your information immediately answered some of my initial questions about actually getting the thing to transmit when I held down the key!
    I will continue on with your CW videos and already know it will be time well spent.
    Thanks again Tom ... you are a Super Elmer!

    Just got my 7300 yesterday. I've been off the air for about 34 years, so I'm just getting my 14AVQ and a 80 meter dipole up. These videos have been a godsend. Equipment is certainly a lot different than they were 34 years ago :=0

    I'm shopping for a new rig after my TenTec Jupiter died and am rirn betwern the 7300 and the ftdx10. I am also trying to relearn CW. Im i correct that only the Yeasu offers CW decode on screen? I prefer the Icom approach to user interface but this could tip my decision. Thanks for the brillisnt 7300 series. Bruce W2TTV

    Tom, Thanks for spending the time to make this video series. I just got my 7300 a few days ago and have my laptop tuned to your channel as a reference. What a great collection of helpful information you've created here! All I had to do is search " IC 7300 CW" and in the first few minutes of the video you showed me how to set the words per minute. Icom should send you a check! Thanks so much.

    Just one quick question: when you were first tuning up on the CW signal (about 1.52 on the video) and got close to it why did you not use autotune?

    That's a great help. I have decided to give Morse a go and wondered how it was keyed on the radios and the transmit modes.
    Given there are almost more options for CW than voice modes it was confusing as to their use.
    I have a yaesu and a Kenwood here which do not have the same structure, however your video is more than clear enough to translate for another rig.
    Thanks for your efforts.

    Tom, Thank you for putting these together. They are great and very helpful. Many people learn by different methods and I think the video is one of the better ways. I like the length, content and style. You don't try to make them cutesy or funny, just informative which I prefer. I think you get compensated by the number of view and likes. I have watched 95 percent of them through the app on comcast Xfinity which doesn’t give you the opportunity to make comments, like or subscribe. I like to watch them on a bigger TV. I feel you are getting cheated and not getting the full credit they ought to have. I have had the 7300 for little over a year.
    Keep up the good work and suggestion for a video (which I have the scenario) is using the external antenna tuner and necessary settings and is it advisable to not use the 7300 tuner at all when using an external tuner. 73 Bruce, K3BBB

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Bruce. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for making the extra effort to get on UA-cam to make the comments. On your question, it depends on which external antenna tuner. There are tuners from Icom, MFJ, LDG and probably others that are made specifically to interface with Icom radios. If you use one of those and plug into the tuner connector on the back, the rig will automatically disable the internal tuner and use the external one. The Tune button continues to work automatically, etc. If you are using an automatic tuner that is not designed for Icom rigs, then yes, you should disable the internal tuner.

    • @K3BBB
      @K3BBB 4 роки тому

      @@HamRadioA2ZThank you. I have five different antennas with two different auto tuners. One the LDG and the other MFJ for the dipoles. The beam is good by itself. The antennas are close to resonant except at the band edges. I bought a new Ameritron 1306 amp and it was said it needs a 1.5 or better SWR to operate so I use the tuners. The Ameritron blew up the very first time I used it and sounded like a 22 went off. Ameritron thought it was a power transistor that let go. I always heard MFJ and Ameritron quality control was suspicious and I think my experience reinforces that. I bought the unit at HRO in New Castle, DE and they took it back and got a Palstar which I’m very happy with and a little more tolerant of SWR up to 2 so rethinking the need for the auto tuners. Pushed the budget but in the long haul you get what you pay for. By the way the audio report using the Palstar LA-1K are all excellent. I don’t ask for an audio report and contact comments on the quality of the audio. Also, the Manager at HRO said the MFJ has a warehouse full of returns with no one to fix them. They were also out of stock on the 1306 amp for a replacement.
      I run the Icom 7300 at 40 watts for full output from the amp using a Heil HM-12 microphone. Keep up the good work and I think your videos are much better than most and very informative. Looking forward to more of them. 73, Bruce K3BBB

    tom if i may ask a ? is it possible for me to use a antenna switcher and a external automatic tuner at the same time. i know its not related but thought id try my luck

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Alan. You can absolutely do that. Most automatic tuners have memories that will remember the settings for a particular frequency. If you switch to a different antenna, the tuner will just recognize that the remembered settings aren’t working and it will start retuning. There are some models that have multiple memory banks specifically for different antennas. You would need check the instructions for your particular tuner on how to do that. Finally, there are some models of automatic antenna tuners that have a built in antenna switch. So you can get both functions in one box. The MFJ-929 is one example. Have fun! 73, Tom. WA2IVD

    When in QSK (full breakin) why didn't you hold the vox/bkin button to bring up the additional menu? Is there no menu that comes up as it did when you were in breakin when you turned it down to a delay of two dits? I'm always for completeness and you didn't follow through on that or mention it. As far as I'm concerned, nothing has ever rivaled Ten-Tec's QSK and I'm curious what Icom calls QSK.

    • @HamRadioA2Z

      Hi. If you hold the Vox/Bkin button when in full breakin, the same menu with the delay comes up. Of course, it has no meaning in full breakin mode. There are no additional settings for full breakin. 73, Tom

    Great videos, thanks for all your help. I just bought my first new rig after 43 years on the air and love this 7300 radio. One question I have is, when in SSB (say on the net)how can I transmit on CW and listen to SSB? I have an old swan 300b that I have had since the beginning and when I was new and restricted to CW, I could listen to the net in SSB and when I checked in I used CW with out changing anything. Is it possible with the 7300? Thanks again for your very welcome videos. Dave VE3CMI

    • @HamRadioA2Z
      @HamRadioA2Z  3 роки тому

      Hi Dave. One way would be to use Split-- Just put your net frequency on SSB in VFO-A. Then put the same frequency into VFO-B and set the mode to CW. Then while listening on VFO-A, press the split button. When you key the rig, you'll be on the same frequency in CW.

      Hi. Keying the mic will put the radio in transmit mode, but it will not actually transmit a carrier. In the settings menu, you can set the internal keyer up so you can use the UP and DOWN buttons on the mic to send dots and dashes. Then the radio will transmit. You can put the radio in RTTY mode. Then keying the mic will generate a carrier.
