OMG! That is exactly how I do it. The only difference is I bring a plastic grocery bag to hang on the doorknob so I can dispose of each dirty paper towel as I finish with it.
I do the same!
Same, or a trash bag

You are the best cleaning lady on UA-cam.
I'm old school, married 60 yrs, I use old flannelette shirts or pyjamas. Give them a good soak in bucket of hot suds & throw in washing machine. No overuse of unnecessary stuff in landfill. Old flannelette makes great rags for windows & mirrors too. Lint has long gone by then.
I just finished cleaning my bathroom , then sat down to drink some water and check my messages. I watched this, and I am happy to say that I did it correctly - I passed the test. Yay me!
Good job Eva!
@@cleanmyspace I'm ashamed to say this but I've been beyond coddled. Ive come looking for a vid because I just moved in with my fiance that travels so much for work and pays for everything. Its only fair that he comes to a clean house and doesnt have to pay for cleaners as well so THANK YOU!
I worked for a company that made toilets, it's amazing the designs engineered to keep your toilet as clean as possible. From how it flushes, how it's glazed, and even the material to make toilet seats is designed to resist collecting bacteria.
The toilet brush drip dry is such a good idea
agreed! so simple!
I don’t like the idea of not thoroughly rinsing it under the bathtub faucet though. I always do that after I’ve used the brush to clean.
I like the way you explain the things. A clean space is a happy space.
I was in US Navy basic training in 1963. They should show this to every recruit. I've added some of these tips and can say an old dog can still learn something. Thank you and All the Best.
I just started my cleaning business and I've been binge-watching your videos. They are incredibly useful and the tips and techniques are easy to apply with amazing results. Thank you so much!
Toilet paper roll goes over in my house. Public toilets always get toilet seat covers/lined with toilet paper. I think people who generally "squat" over the toilets are the one's that make the most mess because they don't clean up their own splatters.
I was going to say the same thing :) . I always carry eco friendly toilet seat cover with me , also a toilet disinfectant (ocd patient here) and use them bfr and aft I use public toilets.
@@sahiba_kaur657 as much as you say you have OCD I get it... public loos are gross!
Yes I went into a public toilet and there had been a squatter in there, pee all over the toilet! 🤢
I find two things are important. One I am now divorced so all the urine remains in the toilet bowl. Helpful, but still disinfect the floor because I’m a nurse and germs are to be avoided. Two I clean after every bowel movement. It’s just easier! The same with the bathroom sink in that I rinse and wipe every time I brush my teeth. My sister has caked toothpaste on her sink.. Gross and lazy. Point being clean as you go in that it takes only a small amount of time, and saves time because you aren’t creating a bigger problem with dried gunk. Your channel is fabulous.
I’ve used a paint scraper with the edge wrapped in paper towel to clean under the back of the seat between the hinges. Soak the area well with the spray your using wait a minute or two for the spray cleaner to activate and the use the paper wrapped paint scraper to wipe away the mess. So there is no fighting to get paper towel or your fingers into that tight awkward area. Just my two cents.
brilliant
Love a cleaning tip from a man.
I knew that large paint scraper would be useful to me in some way, glad I didn’t throw it out
Great suggestion. I have disabilities and it’s a struggle to do jobs that are awkward such as in crevices. I have a mini squeezee which I will try using in the same way.
I’ve been a housekeeper for over 15 years. I’ve seen things . 😬😳 It’s great that you share your great tips with people. I had to learn the hard way years ago. Wish I had you when I started. 🥰
To answer your question… I line the seat !
As far as a beard or mullet …… I’m a beard girl. Toilet paper in front for easy access for sure!
I lined the toilet seat if I have to go. If it's not the cleanest toilet I squat.
Liner all the way….sometimes 2 or 3 offset to make sure the seat is totally covered. One of my biggest pet peeves, although I understand it, is the automatic flusher. Creeps me out when you make any sort of motion and they flush while you are still sitting there. Sometimes you can locate the sensor, and I will drape a piece of toilet paper over it to keep from setting it off. I keep post-it’s in my purse for this purpose also. Also, at home, toilet paper must come over the top!
Melissa, I just bought a bidet to install. Any thoughts on cleaning a bidet attachment?
This is a good idea for a future CMS video :)
@@cleanmyspace Hi, your videos motivate me to be a cleaner person . When you clean an area with the all purpose cleaner , do you rinse the area afterwards? I ask cause the spray has soap in it . I asked this numerous times and never got a response.
@@stacyr4768 Hi, I just wipe Melissa's all purpose cleaner with kitchen paper towel on all the outside parts, also on the tiles around my toilet, no rinsing necessary everything shines after !!!! hope this helps.
@@alisonlee4723 thanks , it helps .
Pull the nozzles down and spray with vinegar weekly
Before any of that, use toilet paper on the outside to dry dust, otherwise you're going to end up with dusty sludge when you wet the surfaces. I also put the toilet cleaner on the inside of the bowl before cleaning the outside so it can start to get to work while I clean the outside.
This video is very timely. The brand new toilet that my apartment maintenance installed about 4 months ago gets dirty really fast, and is hard to clean.
So maybe these tips can help me keep it cleaner.. easier.
Curious why maintenance installed new toilet or how you got them to do it? My community is awful with willing to replace things.
Over the roll is how I place the toilet paper
And I do place toilet paper on the toilet before using when using a public restroom
Love your videos.
Thanks Melissa
Toilet paper definitely goes over for me.
I’m a seat liner, too and I use my foot to flush!
I'll use the paper towel for the door handle and kick the door open. Businesses please put a trash can near the door. I can't make every 3 pointer from this distance.
@@j4n-style576 Same!! I love that little toe pull at the bottom of the door that some businesses have. Wish it was code in all public restrooms.
@@susancofer yes and the one you can put your forearm in to pull open the door. However, I'm concerned someone might yank the door when I use that one.

What’s an enzyme cleaner that you would use in the bathroom? Also, do you have one you would recommend when cleaning carpets?
I have Biokleen
Thank you!!! I just had a new toilet installed the other day and thought I'd check on something I'd NEVER considered looking into!!! I have the basic items, but I need to replace my cleaning fluids. I've been using the wrong stuff all these years!!!
Magic. First time i clean my toilet REALLY 😱 will always do it this way now! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This is Nobel worthy!!!!
A good preventive measure is to always close the toilet before you flush, so as to avoid the "toilet plume".
After we open then it's touching hands 😢
You can also use an old sock instead of a paper towel. It’s intended for the garbage anyway, so it may as well do one cleaning duty and save a bit of paper.
I would suggest using a small amount of tissue on the handle to flush then toss. Using your foot puts a lot of pressure on the lever causing possible damage, not to mention the added germs left for the next person flushing. As a business owner women cause more bathroom plumbing problems than men in the public washrooms. And I’m a woman. I always think, would I do this in my own home. Just a suggestion.
We don't have levers on toilets in Australia, but rather a double button with half flush and full. I'm not sure I could actually kick that high to get the top of the toilet lid 😂.
@@lauren8627
We don’t hardly have any levers left on public toilets here in the states either. Only in homes. Public ones either have push buttons or automatic censors that flush after you stand up.
How I clean my toilets: I START by cleaning the bowl, and I don't use a traditional nasty toilet brush, but a disposable Clorox wand so that's not flicking microscopic toilet bowl spray all over the bathroom (I always put the lid and the seat down before I flush for the same reason). Much more sanitary. Then I wipe down the toilet from top to bottom, except I do the underside of the lid and seat last since those are the germiest parts.
Melissa, u taught me how to clean a toilet. I had no parents to teach me. They barely taught how to wash dishes & MAYBE Mopping
Incredibly satisfying to watch...cannot wait to clean the heck out of my bathroom!!!!
I actually carry with me antiseptic wipes and I wipe and dry the toilet seat before I sit- have been doing it for years with no problem 😁
I hope you don't flush the wipes down the toilet!
I wash the toilet seat with water first. Then I must flush the toilet before I sit
Lol, that’s funny! 🤣🤣🤣 I taught my first two kids to squat in their schools but my 3rd kid I taught to line the seat. Me, myself I always squat. 😆😆😆 I find public toilets repulsive even when they look super duper clean and smell fresh. It’s a mental thing, I guess. At home, I wash my toilets every other day or maybe more often than that if there was a sudden emergency, lol. 😁 What can I say, I have a big family and there’s nothing worse for me than a dirty toilet or a kitchen. Great video! 😁👌🏻❤️
Totally agree!
@@camdelsol365 😁
IMO the only thing that makes public toilets (women’s room) gross is that ppl squat and splatter on the seat, or don’t teach their young boys to lift the seat.
@@HaileeMiu No, I’m not talking about pee on the toilet seat. It’s much more than that. 😁
You made this task so much more manageable!
Thanks Melissa 😊. I have cut down on my paper towel usage they are so wasteful (my opinion). I use reusable cloths and wash them on 60 degrees on cleaning cloths load. My grandma and mom always did this and never had a problem.
I was in a public toilet recently and someone had put lots of toilet paper down there without flushing, blood all over the seat and left a heavily soiled sanitary pad on the floor. I was so disgusted I left without going. I felt sorry for the cleaner who had to deal with this
Your so right.. I could literally never clean without my rubber gloves! 😅 thank you for this loved it! ☺️
I haven't been here in a while . . . . I'm going to binge and clean today.
Go Linda!
I would have to disagree with this. I always clean my toilet bowl with the brush first. Then if any water aplashed onto the toilet rim, seat, handle etc. You then go back & wipe the rest if the toilet with cleaners & paper towels. Also I never flush with the lid open :(
I also clean the bowl first for this same reason and don't flush with the lid open.
@@matagotangel There is no need to desinfect every time as long as nobody is ill. The problem with regular desinfection is creating "supergerms" that can not be killed off with a desinfectant if it really is needed...
Same here. I clean the bowl first after having the TB cleaner sit for a while .
Always close lid, that crap... haha pardon the pun.. can travel 6-8ft in the air
This 🙌🏼🙌🏼
True this is essential for my ocd..🚽🧻
Would you recommend specific enzyme cleaners? And we have hard water so it stains the toilet. Besides the pumice is there anything I can do as a preventative?
Thank you. You have helped me so much.. I was a sloppy house keeper, until you.. now I am clean and neat... and teaching my daughter. Blessings
Thank you so much for the pumice stone tip. So helpful!
Thanks for watching!
This is the method, tools etc. that I use. Great to know!
This is how I clean my toilet. Thanks for the reassurance!
I also do not want to use a bathroom cloth in the kitchen. When a normal cloth gets old, cut off the corners a bit so it has 8 sides instead of 4. Then you know which is which!
I watched her video before cleaning my toilet. Now I will go put it into action. I think I have done fine in the past. But your method makes much more sense. Especially since I have one of those Lysol all purpose cleaner‘s. Thank you.
Love this. I'm normally this throughout. Glad I've been doing it right!
How informative. Thanks so much.
I find that the bolts and their plastic covers that hold the toilet in place in the floor, get a chemical-smelling brown residue build-up and though I've become a pro at cleaning it, I'm wondering WTH is that stuff?
Our favorite toilet seat is the one that clips off instead of screws down. We get them at home depot.
Liner squat if I have to. Melissa I have a question, why do you prefer to not put bleach down the toilet? Can you do a video of products/chemicals that shouldn't go down drains?
I’ll take this as a sign to clean my bathroom.
It's time desi-ray
@@cleanmyspace I did it. I feel better now.😌😇
I live in Cyprus and here they have a toilet seat disinfectant dispenser in most public toilets. You just spray some on a little toilet paper and wipe down the seat, it's great!
TP over. Squat for short visit, liner for longer. 😉
As a professional private housekeeper, I have a different technique. I dust the toilets first. Gets rid of the dust and hair. I use a rag. That gets washed with my microfiber clothes and mop head. The whole thing from the top to the bolts. It helps so much when it’s time to scrub- which I use a toilet brush for the whole thing. I take the handle off and use my gloves hands to hold the brush part and really get up and under the rim. I use lysol bathroom bleach spray. The pumice stone works so well! I usually use limeAway spray for my general housekeepering toilet cleaning. I finish by wiping down it a paper towel. It takes more than 3 minutes. Maybe 5 tops. :)
Also, seat toilets (what you see in the majorities of bathrooms) are for sitting. They were never meant for standing; Pissoirs are for standing. Teach your sons to urinate seated and also to clean the bathrooms. You’ll have fewer odors at home and hosts appreciate this too when a thoughtful, considerate man uses their toilet correctly.
My husband doesn't sit to pee but doesn't have this problem and I disagree that toilets weren't meant for standing. Men created toilets, they know what they are doing. And if they have a long penis that's disgusting.
My dad always sat to pee to keep his bathroom clean... BTW he kept a VERY tidy house
@@maryhollenstein4441 I’m aware of a Dad who always stood up to pee but he made sure that he was accurate in his aiming.
Awesome, thank you!
thank you so much for this. i always struggle with the toilet since the one in my flat is pretty old.
I try to avoid a public toilet when possible as I have a major phobia. But if not possible, I always carry traveler package size cleaning wipes. If for some reason I forget those, I use hand soap and a wet paper towel to give the toilet a once over, then dry with another piece of paper towel.
Melissa, I have insomnia, no energy for absolutely nothing, so I had 3 weeks without cleaning the bathroom, so today I woke up really stressed and decided that it was the day! So it took me 4 hours to clean the whole bathroom, now my feet are aching ☹️, feeling extremely tired
This video is a gem! About public toilets, I never ever ever touch those walls - I'm certain nobody ever cleans them.
Re: public toilets
I use the liner, IF I can get it to work!!! Those things are impossible to line on the seat!!!
That's exactly how I clean our toilet too. But bowl first in case of splash. TP over
I love that we're all females living in my home. I don't have to think about disgusting splatters around the toilet and I'm not particularly grossed out by cleaning the toilet, knowing that only my girlfriend and I use it and always keep it in top condition. It's an easy job for me.
Lol. I have issues with this and it's not because of my husband or sons so...it depends on how far you sit on your toilet and the pressure of your flow. And eww.
@@ASmith-jn7kfit wasn’t an issue for me before I got further in my pregnancy, but yes bc the spray is more splattery and I sit farther forward I’m cleaning under the toilet seat much more often.
Toilet paper definitely over 👍🏻
After spending a lot of time covering the public toilet
with paper and before I sat it all fell into the bowl😱
I squat 😂
Thanks for all your great cleaning tips
Love from Australia xxx
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I will definitely be trying the pumice stone. When we moved into our apartment, I realized there’s a section of unfinished/not sealed porcelain at the drainage hole. All the grime gets stuck there and I’ve tried everything! No amount of scrubbing can get it clean
If it’s really bad, you can also use an acid based cleaner. That is if you’re okay with using harsh chemicals. I only use it when doing houses that are saturated with hard water stains.
Dirty around the seal of the toilet bowl... like where it sits.
She is so beautiful and gives great cleaning advice
I find paper towels way to wasteful. Designated tools only for the toilet do the job too.
Also, I always clean the bowl first, and then the rest, to remove splashes from the dirty cleaning part.
I agree on enzyme cleaners, or, in my case, effective microorganism cleaners. They work wonders all around the house. 😊
I agree. I use my microfiber towels, at clients houses and at mine. I was my towels in hot water; with a sanitizing laundry detergent.
Completely agree, using a ‘clean’ bowl cleaner and then just using paper completely undermines the effort in my mind. Microfibre cloths on a hot wash and detergent gets them fully clean.
I know it sounds gross but I don't use gloves when I clean my toilets because I'm not sure how to store them in between cleaning sessions in a sanitary way. Any suggestions?? I use a toilet wand for the inside so I'm not putting my bare hands IN the bowl per se.
What do you think about silicole toilet brush vs traditional ones?
Silicone*
You are a superhero, thank you. This was more motivating than you know.
I learned this when I had my own residential cleaning business. Tfs ❤️
Now that we wear masks, I wear a mask when I clean the toilet to avoid smelling anything. I also wear a mask when I change the kitty litter.
I hope you aren't referring to "we" as the general population. Wearing a mask is nothing but a sign of submission to a master and no human has a right to order another human around. Furthermore, unless your kitty litter is particularly dusty, and if so, it isn't good for your cats either, you are better off health-wise not wearing a mask.
I like to spray my toilet brush with disinfectant after it drip-drys... maybe a bit over-kill...
What about poop stains under the water in the bowl? If you're using the toilet brush to remove those, how do you clean the brush well enough?
Thank you for the intelligent instructions!👍
Accidental cleaning expert, love it.
Hey! Thanks for the video, that was very thorough. I wanna start cleaning my toilet daily!
I'm usually grossed out by the gloves that I know have been around the toilet and don't know how to wash and store them. Any tips?
Thanks!
Love the drip dry idea
I've never seen a toilet parked right behind a door like that, but I think I like it. Makes sense to not have to see it full time.
At first it seemed a little weird, but now I wouldn't have it any other way!
The only thing that bugged me was the towel hanging on the door. When the door is open that towel would touch the toilet, hmm dry your hands or face after a shower...yuck.
As an Architect, that is the strangest location for a toilet I have ever seen!
Scientifically, you don't hover as it's bad for your bladder, and you don't need to line the seat.
Unless you have open sores on your booty, you have very little chance of ever actually "catching" something from a toilet seat.
If I'm concerned about the hygiene of a toilet, I use hand sanitiser and some toilet paper to give the toilet seat a quick clean.
What is a good disinfectant store cleaner too use for the toilet
Can you recommend an enzyme cleaner? I have all boys in the house and splash and odor is a problem.
i hope you don't mind my input....i used to clean houses too....When you are wiping the base of the toilet, (in this video, a few seconds before and after the 4 minute mark), i wouldn't wipe the toilet, then the floor, then the toilet again....Also when you say you use the paper towel until wet or soaked before throwing out, i personally just, let's say i'm using half of a half of a paper towel, i will go over an area once on one side, then turn it over and use the other side, usually right next to the area i wiped, then get another piece and do the same thing, in the next spot, that way it prevents from spreading any 'stuff' from getting back onto the toilet by over-using one paper towel, especially if the toilets are disgusting.....i don't even know if that's the best way....And when squirting the toilet bowl cleaner underneath, in the video, it kind of looks like you are touching the underneath inner rim of the toilet with the tip of the bottle, which will get germs on the bottle....If i'm seeing that wrong, i'm sorry, my eyes are bad........Also, i find the male species to be very inconsiderate and lazy, in general, though not every single one....A lot of times they'll just pee all over the toilet and floor and won't shut the lids....there's something 'off' with that....
Oh yeah, the public women's rooms are also horrendous...Many females stand up and pee all over the seat and floor and often don't flush, even when they go #2....it's pretty unbelievable.....i don't know which is worse, make or female bathrooms, in general....
@@Dawn-zo2ny What an eye opener! I assumed most Females were basically hard wired like Felix Unger (The Odd Couple)

Thanks for watching Joanna!
@@cleanmyspaceAlways and my pleasure ☺️
I have learned so much from watching your channel ty so much!
The toilet paper is over the top for me. I clean the same way but I cannot use the strong cleaning products, too much chemicals suffocates me. I use a plant based cleaning product with baking soda. Its difficult getting it underneath the seat groove but I'm happy with the results 🤗🤗🤗
Melissa, I use on the inside of my toilet a cleaner that is for Calcium, Lime and Rust. However, the outside gets Clorox Clean-Up and that has bleach in it. I use paper towels for the toilet too and I also use Clorox Clean-Up on the back walls. If I still have any smells I use my spray bottle that has straight White Vinegar in it and spray the area well (normally the walls and floor around the toilet because of Boys). After the straight vinegar sits I go back with baking soda and Lemon and use it on the walls and around the floor and let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then use warm water in a bucket (which gets cleaned with hot soapy water and bleach after) and paper towels to clean it up. The last thing is remove the trash can and take it outside to the trash bin and then it gets a good wash and sat upside down on the edge of the tub to drain or dry and then I go do a load of cleaning rags that I use just for the bathrooms in the house on the hottest water setting and detergent and then I rinse in cold water with a laundry sanitizer additive. Then, I start doing laundry which is normally the towels for each bathroom. Plus the regular towels we use follow that. I spend one day doing the deep clean of the bathrooms and, I have everyone strip sheets that morning to. I do that wash while I clean the bathrooms. The kids help and in a Friday Evening and during the day Saturday my girls and I can clean the house fully.
Wow! You make me tired just reading all that!
I'm definitely going to try pumice stone, my toilet has big build up (calcium?)where water keeps dripping down inside of bowl. I even had cistern replaced & it's no better. Thanks so much.
Toilet paper.....over the top!!!
Public toilets.....only use shopping centre toilets.
Go for it! And let us know how it works:)
So happy to see that you got a brand new pair of casabella gloves Melissa! Hope they last as long as the last pair😍
where do you get those gloves ?
Always always always flush with the lid down !!! If you dont bacteria in the splash lands on all your surfaces including exposed tooth brushes, soap bars ect ....who wants to brush there teeth with poop splash ewww 🤮

Since you asked - paper goes over the top. Public toilettes - no liner but I clean the seat first if its wet as the liners don't do anything - too thin. I also don't put my purse on the floor, ever.
Thank you for your video. Very informative. What enzyme cleaner do you recommend?
To answer your question: I take a bathroom bag with gloves, antibacterial wipes, paper towels wherever I travel. Yes I clean the toilet seat and area top, bottom etc. I let the management know if I found the state of the bathroom was unacceptable/needs cleaning asap (fast food restaurant, hospital sitting rooms...). To me this is much better than trying to use other methods (i.e. making a paper covering, hovering, etc.).
Can you use peppermint oil instead of the tea tree oil in the all purpose cleaner?
FIRST!
Hahahaha🥰
Thank you for the technique lesson. You look like a Genie hovering over the toilet.😅 At first I though it was a camera trick!
This is very convenient, thank you!🙂
Thank you
Is the silicon toilet brush better than a regular one?
Thank you for sharing this video. Can you create a video on how your mother taught you to line a public toilet for use?
When you said you use paper towels I was in total agreement. Throw that mess away and be done with it. I have always done my toilet that way and I am 62. Started cleaning house for my mother when I was 13. Also toilet paper goes over when placing a new roll out for use. My mother taught me to cover the seat, I taught my daughter and she has taught her daughters. ❤❤
