I went to see the Barbie movie with a friend last week and I had the unfortunate experience of sitting next to a teenage boy who was there with his girlfriend and the entire time he refused to even look at the screen, was on his phone listening to his frankly terrible taste in music at full volume, fell asleep halfway through and then towards the end made these deep dramatic sighs like he was an impatient toddler waiting to go home. After the movie he had the NERVE to tell his girlfriend (who was actually enjoying herself and looked so disappointed every time she made a glance at him) that the movie was "stupid and pointless"
.....BRO! how tf would you even know?!?!?! YOU DIDN'T WATCH IT!!! Based on the look on her face after he said that I'm almost 100% certain she dumped him later that day
Edit: for those asking why I didn't try to get him kicked out 1. I am an overall anxious person who doesn't like conflict and was hoping somebody else would intervene...nobody did. 2. It was an imax surround sound theater so even though his music was playing loud it was almost completely drowned out by the time the movie started, it was only during the quiet parts of the movie you could really hear it throughout the theater and keep in mind I was right next to him so me and his gf were the ones who could hear it the most. Still doesn't excuse him listening to music and being on his phone though.
Edit 2: My friend also just mentioned to me that he heard during the final scene of the movie someone saying "are they playing two songs at the same time?"

A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). Denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes. Women inherit a pair of X chromosomes from their parents, and are capable of pregnancy and giving birth from puberty until menopause. More generally, sex differentiation of the female fetus is governed by the lack of a present, or functioning, SRY-gene on either one of the respective sex chromosomes. Female anatomy is distinguished from male anatomy by the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and vulva. The adult female pelvis is wider, the hips broader, and the breasts larger than that of adult males. Women have significantly less facial and other body hair, have a higher body fat composition, and are on average shorter and less muscular than men.
A man is an adult male human.
Prior to adulthood, a male human is referred to as a boy (a male child or adolescent).
Like most other male mammals, a man's genome inherits an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father. Sex differentiation of the male fetus is governed by the SRY gene on the Y chromosome.
The male reproductive system contains the external genitals (the penis, testes and the scrotum) and internal parts, including the prostate gland, vas deferens and urethra.
During puberty, hormones which stimulate androgen production result in the development of secondary sexual characteristics, thus exhibiting greater differences between the sexes. These include greater muscle mass, height, the growth of facial hair and a lower body fat composition.

People who say Barbie is “too feminist” aren’t getting the point because it’s not even that. It shows us BASIC WOMEN RESPECT. BASIC. It’s like giving a man respect just swap it with a women. It’s not even meant to be that we women rule the world. It’s that we don’t even get basic respect.

The movie is three hours long, it's not called "atomic bomb" it's called "Oppenheimer"... if you want to hear about the bomb only and not the man, his struggle, and the repercussions of his choices, the consequences of the actions that set it all in motion... you don't watch this movie. Along with Barbie, it's a different, very serious, type of masterpiece, and I am glad we're getting this lately.

i’ve seen people saying barbie has a simplistic take on feminism - which, i have to say, i agree in some aspects, but it’s the fact that it’s enough to open the conversation that means a lot of me. male friends have messaged me after seeing it to ask for my perspective, kids will see it with their parents and ask questions about the patriarchy and inequality. honestly i think it would’ve benefited some of my cousins to see it when we were kids, because i spent so much of my childhood torn between playing dragons and sword fighting with them, and wanting to play with my barbies. i could’ve spent my childhood doing both instead of feeling trapped or wishing i was a boy so i could be included. i know it has adult themes but kids are gonna wanna see it, and it’s enough to start the conversation to break down gender roles before they’re subconscious in a child’s mind. and that’s a pretty big deal to me.

I mean, feminism is about equality. That’s it, that’s all the movie needed to say to be feminist, and that’s what it did. There was no way to make it more feminist without betraying the literal definition of feminism. And also, feminism doesn’t need to be complicated or deep. It needs to be simple and normalized. And that’s the direction Greta followed. Did the movie changed the world? I don’t think so, but it sure did reach more people than it would have if it had been more aggressive. It was compassionate, it was fun, it was on point, and that’s exactly what it needed to be. Plus every criticism leveled against it, it was already addressed in the narrative.

The most hilarious thing about males not liking Barbie movie is when the movie wasn't out yet and the only information we knew about it was that Margot Robbie will play Barbie many people were upset about it because they thought that we will have yet another one movie with conventionally attractive female main character. Menzies were defending movie saying "Margot Robbie is ideal for this role, she's the most beautiful woman in the world, just let us enjoy normal movies" and blablabla. Now, when movie is out and they saw what it's about they create whole threads on the Twitter discussing how Margot Robbie is actually mid and very average looking. The prettiest person in the world can still believe they’re ugly, and the smartest person in the world may still think they’re dumb. Their feelings aren’t invalid. Everyone gets insecure, it doesn’t matter your looks or your background, and we shouldn’t put others down because they “don’t deserve to feel insecure”, I loved the way Margot portrayed Barbie, and I loved the scene when she saw an old woman for the first time and called her beautiful even more. She was so scared of not being perfect, but when she saw someone with these so called “imperfections” she was in awe of her. As someone who struggles with toxic perfectionism I really enjoyed how it was portrayed. I’ve been put down so many times by others who tell me I don’t deserve to cry over my grades because it’s still an A or cry over my looks because I’m still skinny, when they’ll never understand how I feel. Yet on the flip side, when movies literally tell the audience outright, this is bad or this is good, those movies are criticised for being political. I just think that being able to sympathise with characters such as oppenheimer even when they have done bad things is not glorifying them, its taking a nuanced and more realistic approach to what people are actually like, not wholly good or bad, just people.

No exactly. I have personal feelings about both which is like
Oppenheimer is like the better MADE movie. You can’t deny that fact. I happened to enjoy Oppenheimer more (movie nerd in terms of like cinematography and soundtrack). Oppenheimer to me was just such an amazing movie which held such power and impact about the long term world ending implications and end of the day I’m fascinated by the atomic bomb in terms of its engineering and implications. So yeah I enjoyed it more.
Barbie for a lot of people was probably a lot more enjoyable and 100% fair and I’m sure a lot of ppl felt it had a larger impact which also completely fair. The impact for Barbie was in my opinion a lot more like ppl could have different interpretations of what womanhood and sexism means. It was incredibly fun and so beautiful and balanced the serious tones with humor and musical numbers to put it in simple words.
Barbie and Oppenheimer are not movies that should be compared for “better”. They are so different and just in general have such different narratives and reasons for being made and intentions of what it wanted to impact. To compare these two would be impossible because they are not the same in any sense. @@boneshd_6133 I would actually disagree that Oppenheimer was the better made movie. The audio mixing was in my opinion very poor, the dialogue was so quiet I genuinely wished there were subtitles but then everything else was so loud ( not just the explosions, I understand those were painfully loud for a reason) and some of the shots were wonky (some of the scenes with Emily and Cillian like their kiss and when she's consoling him after Jean's death). And speaking of Jean there was just so much potential for her character that I really don't think was explored enough, it was a 3hr film, yet she honestly just felt reduced to her body (especially in the "I am become death" scene between them, I understand how she was used later in the film during the interrogation scene). Those are my only critiques within the realm of fairness towards Nolan because honestly his style as a director isn't entirely appealing to me for this movie; there were so many scenes in the "fission" parts of the movie that could've been much more impactful had they been given more absurdism or honestly just more art in general. But that is just my personal opinion, and I don't blame Nolan for sticking to his style at all. I will also say that expectation had a lot to do with my opinions of the films; with Barbie I didn't think much of it beforehand whereas with Oppenheimer I had high expectations for it so that should definitely be considered with what I'm saying.

Nuclear war is a inhuman threat, made by humans who were facing a delihma we weren't meant to face.
As for Truman and the Japanese surrendering; in real life there's evidence to support that none of the scientists at Los Almos knew they were ready to surrender, which isn't an excuse, but that's why the movie didn't touch on it. It was meant to feel distant with the horror of what they did creep in slowly because that is what happened for many of the scientists. Some had immediate guilt, some it mounted more and more as they saw what came from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and as the scientists there also got radiation poisoning

On July 21st, I walked out of a theater after watching both Oppenheimer and Barbie (in that order) and originally came to the personal conclusion that I liked Barbie better. It just felt more relatable to me as a 16 year old young woman, so I felt like it was just a better movie. However, after watching this video essay (if you want to call it that) comparing these two phenomenal films, I came to the realization that to me, Oppenheimer is a much better movie. I feel this way mainly because, despite Barbie being a great film about feminism, overcoming toxic masculinity, and the patriarchy, Oppenheimer's acting, score, cinematography, and most of all story really made me understand that the main message is so much bigger than we realize. Barbie was very impactful in the sense of gender roles and self worth, while Oppenheimer sheds light on the fact that humanity will come to an end due to our own hands, and if we don't realize this fact, then we really are doomed. Both movies were simply incredible and I personally believe both should be watched and appreciated. Great video Cooper!

SImiliarly this is how i feel sometimes as a transgender man, not connecting with the cis women in my life, but also understanding that I have a different outlook on being a boy than my cis male counterparts, because I wasn't given the luxury of being assigned male at birth. Like allan, there's this feeling of being a 3rd party idling by (much like in the scenes where he says "and Allan!" when someone is talking about the Barbie's and the Ken's). Allan said himself he was the only allan in barbieland, and i completely understand what that feels like.

I'm obsessed and a movie has never done this to me before. I've listened to the soundtrack, watched interviews and documentaries. I feel the strongest compulsion to go see it again, by myself. I grew up in New Mexico. My mother grew up in Los Alamos because her dad worked at LANL. My dad now works at Sandia National Labs. You don't grow up here (especially in Los Alamos or Albuquerque) without knowing someone who either works at the labs or is related to someone who works at the labs. With that kind of just in the culture here (again mostly Los Alamos and Albuquerque) a lot of us end up pretty familiar with the story and the history, and a lot of us also saw the Trinity testing site as kids(if you're family had the resources to get there because it is in the middle of nowhere). I know someone who used to be a historian at Sandia who is EXTREMELY familiar with the history of Oppenheimer because of that job. She (and a lot of other people here who are very educated about this topic) agree that the movie was very well done because it really captured the way Oppenheimer's mind worked while also not glorifying the decisions that were made, as well as being fairly historically accurate to the actual events Oppenheimer was involved in.

I'm so grateful I watched it before all the lame reviews came out to ruin the experience for everyone. I appreciated that it was more compassionate toward men than I expected & essentially tried to relay the message that NO ONE should be above another, we should be working together not against eachother. I watched Barbie last night and I genuinely burst out sobbing at the end. There were a lot of parts that got me, of course, and a lot that were funny as fuck and as a writer I loved it so so much-but that ending part (SPOILERS!!!) where Ruth and Barbie are walking and talking, the beautiful monologue, “close your eyes and feel” and that SLIDESHOW. That SLIDESHOW is what made me lose it more than I was already. And my mom asked me what was wrong and I couldn’t put words to it because it was a FEELING. A FEELING that I’d had forever and never ever seen like, “explained” before-when I saw that slideshow I saw the way I see the world, how I feel the world-how even though I’d gone through so many things talked about in this movie (I’m a woman, if not obvious lol) I still see the world that way and I FEEL, and it’s OKAY to not know what you want and to FEEL and how my mother has always supported me-shit you not I’m tearing up right now-when I was a little girl I loved Barbie so much, she was my world, I’m turning 20 this year, and this is probably one of the most important things I could have ever seen at this point in my life. I felt UNDERSTOOD.

I’ve only watched Oppenheimer, but I’ll probably come back to talk about Barbie.
Oppenheimer: Personally, I think it’s amazing, especially if you understand the science and have the historical context. I was NOT expecting anyone to be topless in there, but let’s move on from that. I think the directors did great on tying the events of the movie into future events (i.e. the Cold War). They did super well on showing the complexities of his character and how he was not perfect, nor was he particularly good at interpersonal relationships. They definitely did their research, and I think that they captured Oppenheimer’s conflicting feelings on the creation of the atomic bomb. The way it was presented was really intriguing and kept you on your toes, despite the fact that most of us know what happens if you know your history. Overall, I think that it was great, though the sound was a little overwhelming. That’s kind of a me thing. I would also like to add that the purpose of the movie was not to glorify Communism, but to show what happened from Oppenheimer’s perspective, which is why many of the characters that were part of the Party were shown in a positive light. Also, I think when Oppenheimer said, “I think we did.” They were also kind of foreshadowing the Cold War. The Cold War caused Russia and the US to now have the weapons to potentially destroy the world. Reply to me please y’all I need to talk about this with people even if it’s an argument because I feel like y’all will be civil.

@@thundercloud755 Oppenheimer wasn't the one who was in Japan dropping the bomb.. And apparently he never met a Japanese person irl show why would they show that? Also if they did have Japanese ppl in the film, all you would see is them dying in the most brutal way possible?? Also the film DID show Oppenheimer feeling guilty for the bombing of Japan.
