@@tres7351 My personal issue is that I'm kind of getting tired of metafictional commentary. Like instead telling a story with themes and motifs that gives it an identity of it's own or a narrative to tell, it has to instead be in some way a response to or self aware examination of tropes, genre conventions, archetypes, etc. Like everyone wants to make fun of cliches, but it's getting to the point where it's more cliche to do that than actually having the cliches themselves. That's what I feel about criticizing chosen one plots have been doing. There's just a smug, too-cool-for-school self-indulgence that often arises from that and I'd hate to say but I don't think this episode really is saying anything that needs to be said. I like the moment to moment aspect of the plot and how that spoofs or subverts the tropes as they're great in the moment... but if the show doesn't intend on making Luz a chosen one then just don't make her one. Do we really need this whole spoof to tell us that? No, the writers just kind of want to make fun of YA fiction which you know everyone else has and will inevitably do. It's why I can't really get into Rick and Morty despite recognizing how good the show is. Because it feels more like it prioritizes ridiculing stories and storytelling than actually telling a story worth my limited time on this planet and that's sorta the hot new thing that's been going in our culture at large.
@@SpiderandMosquito Well I can’t change your opinion about meta commentary in media as a whole, that’s your opinion and you can have it. As for Rick and Morty don’t feel bad about it, I like the show and I think most people can take it or leave it. The thing about this episode is that it’s Luz confronting what she expects from this new world and what it actually is. Luz is extremely genre savvy, just from reading fantasy novels, so she thinks she knows what this world is all about. She’s trying to make this world into her own self-indulgent fantasy, and because of the puppet demon it goes that way. That’s why the writer’s included those cliches, Luz expects them and to be funny they made them exaggerated parodies. Ultimately it was meant to present the cliches Luz expects and say these aren’t real. As for my thoughts on them subverting the Chosen One archetype, if they hadn’t brought it up in the early episodes it still could have been a possibility down the road. The possibility exists because it’s a common trope, one that Luz is so familiar with she immediately believes she’s it’s true. If they did do it later then it kinda would cheapen everything afterward and invalidate everything she had already done cause it ruins any stakes. However I’m thankful with them bringing it up now and nipping it in the bud so we don’t have to worry about it. As I said in my original comment, I want Luz to be great without her being destined for greatness.
I never really followed the whole "chosen one" cliche, to be honest. One of my favorite stories, King Arthur had this but there was a catch. While some people openly accepted that Heaven had deemed Arthur worthy to draw the sword from the stone, others questioned his right. In short, this act of courage inspired his enemies to become his closest friends
