    because of the snare placement I think the beat is felt more in 6/8 or even 12/8 - basically a slow 2/4 or 4/4 but subdivided in triplets. very cool and fits perfect. I think it's hard to make straight 3/4 in hip hop because there is no way to get the alternating kick/snare.

    • @a_8764
      @a_8764 Рік тому +6

      This is true. Even the song "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time" by The Avalanches is more like 6/8 (same snare placement). However check out Teebs' song "Just the Yellow Bits", it's in 3/4. It's not exactly hip hop but falls within the LA beat sound, so it's adjacent at least.

    • @sloppyy
      @sloppyy Рік тому

      yeah this is how it always ends up when i make a 3/4 beat, the drums are just 4/4 but slowed down (which is a great format for ballad type stuff). music theory people will know to check the meter, but to me it's just semantics and i'd let people use the terms interchangeably

    • @DS-fj8fh
      @DS-fj8fh Рік тому +4

      This is correct-it’s 6/8 not 3/4. (Feel like a douche saying this but I’m a former music theorist, currently tryna get at Jon’s lvl with the hip hop beats!!) clearly correct analysis ability correlates in no way to being able to make dope beats haha

    I stumbled upon your channel as a fellow Octatrack user. I’ve never really enjoyed hip hop in the form of UA-cam synthfluencers. But you have really shown through your process that sampling is truly an art form. Your meticulous slicing method and overall sense of hearing the full song is really really fantastic to watch.
    On top of that, every song that come out of your sessions is a bop.

    I love making beats in less common time signatures! I have made some in 5/4 and 7/8. It can be a challenge to get it to sound natural but the process is fun. I've found that subdividing makes it a whole lot easier. Let's say for 7/8, instead of counting 1-7, count it as one bar of 4/4 plus one bar of 3/4. Highly recommend trying it if you feel yourself getting stuck in the same old rhythms.

    This the way Jon! Just have a steady income and make your music. Also we can watch you and hear your voice. Nice! (Casette 3 is a masterpiece, can't stop listening, thanks for that also...)

    Dope! I never got my head around how to make 3/4 beat...is it simply to actually go with a 6/8 beat? Cause that's what I count in the beat..

      Some people are saying this is 6/8. It's all about whatever feels good to the source material.

      It’s 6/8. The eighth note is what’s getting the beat, or “setting the pulse”. Definitely eighth notes, not quarter notes.

      its technically 6/8. the best way to tell the difference is how you feel it. 3/4 splits the 6 eighth notes in 3 groups of 2, while 6/8 splits the eighth notes into 2 groups of 3.
      3/4 : ONE two THREE four FIVE six
      6/8 : ONE two three FOUR five six
      but if you aren't writing sheet music for other musicians it doesn't really matter.
