Finally someone is saying that 'this is Northern country', was starting to get annoyed when so many blogers say it's eastern country.
Madara, those people mean "eastern" in a political, social and sadly cultural sense. Too much soviet or Russian influenced which is true. It is Northern only geographicly. Before Soviet times it was not an Eastern country. Germans were the original founders of most Latvian cities and lived there for a very long time. Unfortunately most of them left the country and now German is not spoken so widely anymore but Russian is. It was not always like that.
Sad we are just trying to avoid being called "Eastern country" because of big influence of Russians we are having. At least I feel like it's because of that, mostly . And with Northern I understand "better life" which we are having, comparing to real eastern countries like Belarus, Ukraine utt.
@BrowTV with Germans we would have been better of than with Russians and Soviets. Should have stayed with Germans. The country would receive great support from Germany and would be economically and politically in a different position now. Sadly now it is still in the slow process of recovering from all the soviet influences. Whats real Latvia? Original founders of most latvian cities were Germans that lived there together with Latvians. Almost no Russians were there for centuries. German and Latvian was widely spoken and Russian much less. Very different from today.
@@madarab.1629 well Madara how do you get rid of those soviet or eastern influences quickly? Its hard. Still recovering and still feeling it. All the Soviet Countries were affected and as a result their ecomonies suffered greatly. And when it comes to architecture you will always be reminded of the soviet influence when you see those ugly soviet apartment blocks in Latvia and elsewhere. It is possible to at least renovate them so that they look more appealing. Sadly it is a slow process in Latvia. Estonians are doing a far better job when it comes to that. After the collapse of the soviet union they started reducing and destroying all the soviet influences right away, including the renovation of the soviet era buildings. Actually in Tallinn those soviet era apartment blocks can look rather pretty! It was even hard to tell that it is from the soviet era at first! And due to this mindset Estonia is doing really well now and has had the best recovery from soviet influences among all the former soviet union countries. Really should take Estonia as an example and learn from them how it is done.
@BrowTV it simply would have been far better than getting sucked into the soviet union and then trying to recover from it for such a long time. Latvia would be in a totally different ecomonic state now if it had stayed with the germans instead of the soviets. Anything would be better than soviets lol.
Your juice become so expensive because you said "yes" to fresh juice which mean they will use a juicer and orange to make a fresh juice instead of just given you juice from a carton. Its the same in Ukraine. So never say yes to fresh juice, as its least 3 times more expensive than normal juice.
expensive, but it is much healthy
Okay. But in Brazil fresh juice I think is pretty cheap.
why never say yes to fresh juice? what if someone wants a fresh juice? it is worth the price to many people.
fresh juice should be "normal" juice.
@@niqolas, actually, neither of them is healthy at all. It's just a myth.

@@dsu1 German and English and Swedish belong to the same group. Latvian and Russian belong to the different groups, related though as indo-european languages. Russian and Latvian are very different, it is like Italian, or French and German, they share some international vocabulary through Latin language and again being related as European languages and neighbors throughout the history.
Lithuanian and Latvian are the closets relatives languages, however, Latvia was heavily influenced for 700 years by Germans and German culture and language (simply, Riga is a German city founded in 1201 by a German bishop from Bremen, Germans lived in Riga until WW2).
I speak both, Russian and Latvian :)
@@dsu1 Well but that again applies to many cities of the world. In many of them people have been living long before the official founding date. However, that documentation and founding date is usually one of the main factors for deciding the age of a city. It applies to countries too. For example Latvia as a state or country is only 100 years old because that kind of declaration and documentation was done in 1918. But of course people have lived there and things have happened there for a very long time before that. So how old is Latvia then according to you? Latvia too was a populated place long before 1918. So was it not founded in 1918 then?
I visited Latvia a couple of years back and stayed in Jurmala (just outside Riga) and it was an awesome vacation, lovely long beach there and loads of family activities including an excellent water park and a huge National Park called Kemeri which was well worth a visit! Being a Brit I was a bit apprehensive before I traveled as I had read some posts online that Latvians were not overly keen on the English (though I think the comments I read were mostly just referring to the pissheads) but I found everyone to be super friendly to both me and my family! Great video Gabriel.
davidbryant551973 You are right, the pissheads are pissing me off big time. Like they pee on our Freedom Monument how disrespectful is that?
In Latvia it's like that. Almost every teenager, or young people knows English. For middle aged adults, it's 50/50.(half or maybe less know English). And it is pretty rare to see an old person talking English, tho Almost all of them talk Russian. (but there still are)
Yup, my family especially hates the English... except for me :3

I have not been to Riga, since 2nd August 1990, when it was the capital of the Latvian SSR. I stayed at the Intourist hotel, got around almost exclusively by tour bus, so I did not get to explore on my own. One proud moment from August 1990 that I can remember, was singing with the youth choir in the Rigas Doms, Herdera laukums 6, and I recorded the performance on a C-90 cassette. It has to do a better job with renovating those ugly soviet apartmemt blocks, especially the ones closer to the city centre. Like in Tallinn, Estonia. Other cities in Latvia such as Ventspils have also done it. Should do it in Riga too. Its about time. And need to fix historic buildings and streets in the old town of Riga, such as renovating Peitavas street in the old town to make it more attractive to visitors. It is in a pretty terrible condition now.
Es esmu no ventspils
@@gaboom8725 Thats great. It looks like in Ventspils those soviet apartment blocks are nicely renovated and painted. Especially the ones closer to the city centre. Hopefully the same can be done in Riga. Not sure why they dont do it. I think Estonia was the first country that started renovating all those soviet blocks because they wanted to get rid of that kind of soviet image as soon as possible.

Hi, thats art nouveau that you are talking about i guess. Its certainly very nice and there are more than 800 such buildings in Riga. Most of them in Riga were built between 1899 and 1913. Actually by 1910 art nouveau was already starting to fall out of fashion and was later replaced by art deco. In Riga you can book organised art nouveau tours.
When I used to live in Riga, I thought that prices in some places were too high. But after living in London for a few years and looking at this prices, understand that it is extremely cheap :DDD But I am glad that tourists are interested in my home city!

Everyone always explores only the old town, noone goes over the river on the other side and gets in the more diverse spots :/
Yes sadly most probably only do that however Gabriel also went to the Central Market and Art Nouveau area. There are over 800 art nouveau buildings in Riga scattered all over the place. That alone takes quite a bit of time to see that. You can book an organised art nouveau tour in Riga though to make it easier.
Nobody wants to see Russian drunks, poverty, and drug dealers.
You need to visit Jurmala! Fantastic white sand beach 30 minutes from Riga.

I travelled to Riga a few years ago.
The art nouveau area of Elisabetha Street is totally amazing. Stunning building facades. Got taxi out the motorway to the Lido restaurant for dinner one night.Great place on three
floors. Basement bar and restaurant had live folk music and dancing.
Great atmosphere for ages 30 up.
My only criticism of Riga was that some taxi drivers were grossly overcharging.Never get in a cab that doesn't have the company name on it's doors. Always ask the price first if in doubt. Same applies in Budapest
Very few restaurants are as cheap as the two you visited .
They were the exception rather than the rule.
A very interesting city and enjoyed the experience very much.
Another great video of beautiful city. Well done as always Gabriel.
Latvia definitely got a Nordic/Scandinavian vibe to me.
re hash in what way? Go little out of the center at you’ll see no different pocture that of Vladivostok or Murmansk ;)
@@edgarscirulis1129 Certainly the older or pre-soviet parts of the city share some similarities with, for example Stockholm. You can find similar old architecture in both old towns. However Nordic countries were not part of the Soviet Union but Baltic countries were and thats why in all of them you can find Soviet architecture like those apartment blocks. Soviet times really brought with them some unpleasant architecture. Very little of it was inspiring and nice. Such a contrast to those magnificent older Art Nouveau buildings for example. If Soviet times had not come then all of the architecture would have been nicer. No Soviet style apartment blocks would be really nice.
hahaha lol....pardaugava
Bruno Krasnoscokovs I wish you were true;))
@@edgarscirulis1129 well its kind of true that the soviet times really ruined the architecture. You must understand that soviet era apartment blocks were not buillt or designed with love and care. They were simply the cheapest and fastest way to accommodate a lot of people that were coming to live in the cities. In contrast the older Art Nouveau buildings were built and designed with great care. They were desinged with a totally different mindset. They were designed to provide an inspiring place to live for city residents, to make them dream and hope. They were an artistic statement to give the city its own vibe or character. You cant say the same about the soviet architecture that came later. 1900 was such a good time for art and architecture.

Hi Gabriel, Riga, is a beautiful city very clean and people seem very friendly. The architecture is amazing I do love seeing art deco a lost art with profound beauty. You know towards the end of video when you step in the area where the music was playing it really remined me of Irish music playing and dancing folk music. I was expecting heavy metal from your conversation you had but maybe that came later that evening.
Hi Wilfredo, just wanted to tell you that that architecture is called Art Nouveau, not Art Deco. Art Nouveau was very popular in Europe between 1890 and 1910. It already was starting to fall out of fashion by 1910 and later it was replaced by Art Deco. Most Art Nouveau building in Riga were built between 1899 and 1913. There are more than 800 of them.
Riga has the largest and for sure the finest collection of Art Nouveau, or as we call it Jugendstill, buildings in the world. The whole city centre is under UNESCO heritage protection. Worth visiting :)

Actually Latvian and Lithuanian languages are quite similar, they come from the same language family. Many common words have only slight difference. Though it is not possible to understand one another in full sentences. Estonian though is completely different, as it is coming from the same language family as Finnish, and there are basically no similarities with Latvian or Lithuanian.
zmarcz37 Don`t mix things up. The language family is Indo-European so this way all l-ges in this family have some similarities(latin base etc.), but l-ges are divided into groups and Latvian & Lithuanian belong to Baltic l-ge group and are only two remaining live l-ges from this group. Yes, Estonian belongs to Finno-Ugric Family and are very different from Indo-European Language family languages in general.

I'm glad you made it to the Baltics! Do you find constantly traveling to be cheaper than living in the USA?
Yeah for sure, depending on where you travel of course but overall it's cheaper to travel.
Gabriel Traveler do you ever get tired of traveling bro?

do you travel to Stockholm and back all the time with Tallink?
Woah, you have made such a circle to get to the river Daugava and then to the Art Nouveau district. Could have been a very short walk from the old town. Riga is lovely as usual! There is no better place than Riga, thank you for the video!
