Wow, she said the school she went to did NOT allow them to put chemicals in their hair! That was a GOOD thing! Growing up in the U.S., it was considered "normal" to put a relaxer in a child's hair. Thank goodness things are changing.
It's like that in some schools in Jamaica too. The school I went to prohibited relaxers and weave. I used to hate it but I'm so glad now bc I have thick, long healthy natural hair.
Isn't that (ironically) funny that the school you went to wouldn't allow chemicals but here in America...a girl in Florida attending a *Christian* school wanted her to put a Relaxer in her hair because they said it was too thick, wild and distracting! Ain't *that* a blip!?!
Me too! I couldn't concentrate on the vid properly because I couldn't believe such a thing existed! Wish my daughter could go to a school with that rule.
donat mouele wow!!! wish it was a rule in schools here in Amerikkka...Dr. Umar Johnson is raising funds to open an Academy for African (American) boys & girls here & he states no perms, weaves or relaxers allowed...GREAT IDEA for us to learn to love self!!!💕
FACTS!!! I am currently utilizing it for length retention! I I've been wearing the rubber thread since July 6 and every 3 weeks I recycle my parts as well and reinstall!!! I use tea tree scalp serum to cleanse my scalp!!!
Hi! The matting more than likely happens because of the use of cotton yarn, instead of acrylic yarn. Cotton yearn steals moisture and isn't sealed like synthetic fiber, so it can become tangled in hair. Acrylic yarn will not steal moisture and interlock with hair in the same way. That's a tip most people apply to yarn braids, but it seems very useful here, too.
Thanks for the tip. How do you maintain your hair? If I keep my hair threaded for 4wks at a time, do I un-thread weekly to wash/cond hair or keep the threads in and just take out once a month. I plan to do this for 6 months. I ordered my first wig tonight.
Im zimbabwean too :D & i used to always hate when my mom did this hairstyle on me when i was younger however now im 16 and i actually have this hairstyle right now and i love how its helped my hair grow and my hair has a slightly wavy pattern when i take it out and i love it! surprised at how some people are only hearing about this now.....Africa has many locked up hair secrets that people don't know about......
Im from africa too and we used this technique as children, doing different styles with them and my hair grew til my shoulders by the time i was 12. Its best on hair that has been deep conditioned and oiled to avoid breakage. We kept the thread in for days for better effect though, thats how it really works
Ok I threaded my hair for the first time got my bible said the prayer did a lot more finger tangling than using the comb, used the " LOC" method then thread the hair in 6 omg I am so excited. I actually see the hair stretching. Nice
Omg! I just subbed to you, and I'm only learning about 5 videos in that you're Zimbabwean! I am too, and it's good to see you repping, waita basa! :) My mom used to always send me to school ne mabhanzi, and I felt so out of place because I went to an American school and all of the other black girls had "nice" relaxed hair. Now I feel blessed because while they've got bald patches, my mane is still growing :D Love your channel, keep it up!
I know your struggle I am Zimbabwean and I live in Australia, Whenever I have my mabhanzi I have to spend ages explaining how and why i do them. lol #MAZIMBO
I have 4c hair. I used this method the other night just to see how it worked and my hair was super stretched like I did a blow dry. I am hooked. I am going to do my daughters hair next. Thank you for sharing!
I wear wigs as a protective style and my hair is retaining a lot of length. I am a new subscriber and I would like to try this as an alternative to braiding and corn rolls. Can you please do a video on how you wear a wig with your hair like this and also on how you take them down? Thank you and God Bless you Xo.
Is banding sufficient? I will definitely do this over having someone cornrow my hair. Other people abuse and mistreat my 4c hair. They yank it from the root to the ends! They have the audacity to say, "Girl! You just tender headed!" No, I just have tight kinks and coils that need tlc. They obviously have no time to detangle my hair gently, so threading or banding it is!
Lol who knew amabhanzi would become a hit in the hair world?! I'm a Zimbabwean as well, living in Canada. I assume you speak Shona (I speak Ndebele but I understand well)). Thanks for posting this! Now there's an easy protective style that I can do under my wig!
I love the fact you did the African threading, I grew out my hair with yarn I kept it in since Nov 1st 2016, now it is Jan 28th I took the yarn out my hair n now ppl asking me if it's my real hair. I love it, it's past bra strap length. I'm African American thanks for the video 😊💖💖💖💖💖
+Precious Legit I took out the yarn this month. n gotten my hair done from the beauty salon and many people and my family members ask me of its my real hair.
It looks so cute when you just have the thread in, and the bun looked amazingly elegant! I'd really love to see what other styles you could do with your hair when it's threaded like this.
I've been doing this for the past four months after I wash my hair. Then I mini twist a day (or more) later and put those under a wig. I LOVE the folding and threading trick for the ends of your hair though. I haven't been doing that. Instead I've been ending the knot on the ends of my hair. So I have been worried about the stress that I'm putting on my ends when I take the threading down. Now I can thread my ends safely. Thank you!
I like this technique better with the yarn its softer and this makes my life better . I was using thread at first but when I saw your video I was so happy. I have like 4 rolls of the red heart yarn just sitting here . I have passed this technique down to my family and friends thank you. and to think when I was young my mom use yarn to make pony tails . thank you for a great and helpful video to healthy hair.
Thanks for the video Dephne, I think we need more testimonies like it to encourage and empower us. I went natural at least 10 years ago, and threading has helped keeping my hair in check, especially after I wash. Threading actually makes my hair looks and feel like it has been straightened out, and it makes it super easy to style. I use mostly sewing thread and a mix of shea butter and oils on damp hair.
MY DEAR YOU ARE TRULY A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!! I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WITH THE EXACT SAME HAIR TEXTURE AND DENSITY AS MINE THANKS TO YOU!!! I'M JUST A FEW INCHES BEHIND YOU LENGTH WISE. THANK YOU FOR THE TIPS AND INSPIRATION. GOD BLESS YOU!
This is incredible...I have been battling with my threading because I started to suspect that it was breaking my hair...I was using the african threading string, which means when I remove it it will cut my hair at the ends....I think the folding technique is GENIUS! Thank you so much! Glad I came across this video!
Hey Dephne. i have bra strap length 4b/4c hair. Into how many sections should I part my hair when wanting to do threading under a wig?☺☺☺😍😍😍😍 I love your videos and your spirit. You are a blessed and favoured woman in Christ.😍😍😇😍😍🤗😇😍👑
Im a Zimbabwean living in Ukraine . Funny thing i did this to my hair today before watching the video and my white classmates looked at me like 😳..... Its winter gotta protect this hair. Thank you for representing love😘
I attempted this the other night and failed miserably, I'm glad I found your video, you really explained it well. My only question would be what happened to the string that you wrapped around your finger at the start of the braid, because each time u fast forwarded n I missed that part....also how do you wear them under a wig when they tend to stand out :) I know I have lots of questions lol thank you for sharing your knowledge, culture and beauty with us all.
I love your videos, thank you.In Nigeria,we did lots of threading as young girls in school back then in the days, because schools will only take cornrows and threading but as ladies or grown ups,it is not fashionable anymore, thank you for telling us again the importance of this technique, now i know better and now I am going back to the oldies,..lol stylishly though..and I am doing this on my kids immediately..thanks for sharing....
This video is a blessing I have been researching ways to grow out my daughters very dry kinky beautiful hair. God is faithful. I look forward to trying this, thank you for sharing!! God Bless you.
Im so glad I found your page. Definitely encouraging me to take better care of my 4c hair. Hard to handle but all things are possible through Christ who strengthens me. If he can do it for you he can do it for me!!🙌
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Doing the wraps with acrylic yarn and starting with wrapping around my finger has been the easiest way to do this yet. And I love the top secret tip! Thank you!!
Great instruction. I've just finished this technique on my short, natural hair. Of course, it's not as neat as I'd like it, but I know I will get better the more I do it. My plan is to use this technique after washing and deep conditioning, leaving them in for at least 1 day and wear my stretched hair in a high bun using synthetic hair as the bun. Also, I plan on buying natural hair clip ins and wear this technique on my hair as a protective style. If it works with the clip ins...great. Unfortunately, I sweat horribly when I wear wigs. Gods peace!
One question: I had an issue with how to wrap the string that was around my finger. That took me some time as to the direction I should wrap it around my hair. It's difficult to see what you did with that piece of string in this tutorial...thanks.
Thank you! I have four young daughters and All five of us are 4c. I wanted to do something crazy for our first UA-cam videos and this might be it. I will probably be trying this for 6 months while we're homeschooling and chronicle our results. You are a Godsend :-)
Quick question: so when you say leave it threaded for 3- week, when would I remove the thread to wash and condition my hair? After the third or fourth week or once a week like I normally do? Thanks Dephne Madyara
This is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I can absolutely see doing this on a little girl with colored yarn. I think the final look will be so cute! If only I had a daughter!
Hey ... I am from Swaziland and I grew up doing this..did not know it was actually helping me because I did not like it... I am going back to my roots..yeeee,,, Thnak you for yr vid,,I have subscribed already
did you oil the yarn before threading? and can this be done on damp hair like just after its been washed? thanks for the tips i cant wait to try african threading :)
in the previous vid I watched before this one, the braider threaded a young lady's freshly washed and moisturized damp hair with the plastic string that kids used to braid into keychains and other things.
I personally do this in between braids (e.g box braids) . I prefer to do it when my hair is damp. I first comb out my hair (to avoid the knot's and tangles) then I oil my scalp and the length of my hair, comb it through one more time and then thread it. That way when I take it down the hair is stretched as well as knot free. As long as you don't thread it too tight, your hair won't break. :) I hope this helps!
i tried it the other day i did it on freshly washed hair with weaving thread and then again on dry hair that i moisturised with water and shea butter and used cotton yarn instead i love the results guys! thanks x
First of all; you are a godsend! And you seem like you have such a genuine energy! A pleasant to watch! Ok so...how long do I leave the hair threaded?!
You can also keep it for whatever amount of time you want, as far as you protect it and wear head scarfs if you're going out. You'll actually know when to take it out. It all depends on you. Hope that helps. :)
My mama used to do our hair like this all the time, also for school because no chemicals or different hair styles were allowed, we either had it cut short, corn rowed backs or threaded, we all looked the same lol .... I am from Kenya..Great memories...Thanks and God bless
My father is Fulani from Senegal and my mother was taught threading. When I was a small child she used to thread my hair. I loved it. We do not need to use heat all the time. Our hair is very versatile.
Thank you for reminding me this. I am Caribbean. Growing up, it used to be a thing in some villages. I have never done it , I had long hair back then. I am going to start doing it for thickened and additional length. Merci!
Wow, this reminds me so much of my own Mother wrapping my hair as a child! The styles were so much fun! I should certainly try this again. Thanks for sharing! :-)
same way as you would if you had conrows, just put in a bit more and i would suggest doing the green house technic. put your showcap on after moisturizing, i usually leave overnight..
+Nanaesly Neon , i am from NIGERIA AND YES, I WENT TO A SCHOOL THAT SAID NO HAIR RELAXERS AND SERIOUSLY, BY SSS 3, MY HAIR WAS VERY LONG BECAUSE WE ALWAYS DID 'THREAD' AND IT SURE WORKS. NATURALLY, african women dont relax hair!
+kimmy_kimxo they can tell because the hair would not become curly again and the texture of the hair changes completely. Trust me it's recognizable for people who know African hair types :D
So glad I found your channel! Your so bright and refreshing lol I love that your a woman of God and spreading The word also a natural! From Zimbabwe to the Uk! Keep up the good work sister!
Do you leave this on for a while then take it off? Or as soon as it's dry (I watched your previous hair care video that said that you do this when you wash your hair)
Great video! I've never seen this but I will try it because I have the same texture as you! I really appreciate this- we really need techniques like this to protect and retain our hair type!
so my hair is relaxed and i want to start my natural transition would you recommend i stretch it this early or wait til im completely natural go ahead and start stretching ?
Lacia Williams Now. I used to use threading for stretching my relaxers 5-6 months apart, starting as early as 12 weeks post relaxer. Now I'm using it for transitioning 😊 happy growing!
I'm so glad when watching this vid. I've been rocking my hair in african threading for the last 3 weeks and i'll keep doing it, and we'll see how it goes.
You are so pretty and so fortunate that your school didn't allow chemicals; here in America the teachers didn't care what we did to our hair. How does this help grow the hair? I really want to get started doing this.
Tnx gal for sharing this.. Am a Ghanaian nd used to wear this kind of hair buh we call it a different name in our language. Going back for my old style
Thanks for sharing. I wish more of my younger students parents would do this. Simply for the maintenance and avoidance of toxic chemicals as a young age.
It's very pretty. God bless you too. I've been doing the beehive braiding and bantu knots all summer. I've had the beehive braids in for at least a month, and have been cowashing and hot oil treating my hair biweekly.
Hey from Zimbabwe!! COOL I'm from Cape Town but I live in USA now for about 10 years. I love your channel it's a great help to me . I have a daughter with 4c hair your vids are very helpful.
natalie bryant hey sis!! that is so cool welcome to my channel and thank you so much for watching I'm so glad these videos can help for your daughter's hair journey :-) x
Nice to see a Zimbabwean. I'm Zimbabwean too and also natural and that is how I do my hair maBhanzi's. What l would like to see is ur full hair routine on how u maintain it from the time you wash to the time plait it inBhanzi's please please please. Your very inspiring , l also enjoy your words of wisdom .lm so proud of you making us Zimbos proud. Good job and may God continue blessing you. :) :) :)
Thank you very much am starting my natural hair journey, this video have helped me and gave me confidence you know back home in Zim relaxed ,artificial and synthetic braids and weaves are overtaking mabhanzi and mabhanzi are regarded as old fashion kkkkkkkkk. I think mabhanzi is the way to go to grow my natural hair. Off i go to buy head wraps, shifons and wigs to cover y mabhanzi as i go to work. Thank you dear
new subbie here!!! growing up my brothers used to say "arukwa matom tom namama " lol...thanx for reminding me of them olden days....will sure go back to my roots lol
Wow, she said the school she went to did NOT allow them to put chemicals in their hair! That was a GOOD thing! Growing up in the U.S., it was considered "normal" to put a relaxer in a child's hair. Thank goodness things are changing.
thank goodness. those things will burn your scalp.
Today, it is even the opposite in some schools, which prohibit natural hair. It's crazy.
DanceLifeLoveTV...... I had to rewind it because I couldn't believe my ears
It's like that in some schools in Jamaica too. The school I went to prohibited relaxers and weave. I used to hate it but I'm so glad now bc I have thick, long healthy natural hair.
DanceLifeLoveTV ii

Wow....thats just aweful. Who would do that??? And why???
That is bad, am from in Kenya & my school too did not allow chemicals
+DulceVitaxo awful
in my country we used to just cut it all off during school and college im just beginning to grow out my hair
Mercy t 😱😱😱
Wow I wish my school had a rule against chemical relaxers. Would have saved me a lot of trouble. :)
OopsieeDaisee lol!! xx
Me too! I couldn't concentrate on the vid properly because I couldn't believe such a thing existed! Wish my daughter could go to a school with that rule.
my school back in Africa wouldn't allow us to relax hair nor put extensions lol funny how I hated those rules back then, but it was a blessing lol
donat mouele wow!!! wish it was a rule in schools here in Amerikkka...Dr. Umar Johnson is raising funds to open an Academy for African (American) boys & girls here & he states no perms, weaves or relaxers allowed...GREAT IDEA for us to learn to love self!!!💕
donat mouele Yea I went to school in the caribbean. They also didn't allow braid extensions. Sigh
African threading is not only good for hair retention but is also great for stretching your hair without heat.
Thank you for the education. What about the cotton, I have been told all my life that cotton will rip our hair out.
@@chandrahill2994 Not necessarily true. Many African women who do the threading have no problems. But you can use silk thread if you want instead.
@@chandrahill2994 thats wool that’ll mess up our hair
FACTS!!! I am currently utilizing it for length retention! I I've been wearing the rubber thread since July 6 and every 3 weeks I recycle my parts as well and reinstall!!! I use tea tree scalp serum to cleanse my scalp!!!
Leave in for 3-4 weeks remove thread to wash and condition hair and repeat do this consistently for 6 months

What hairstyles can I do with it?
Or just wigs?
Obrigada ❤

I do this all the time and wear wigs for two to three weeks and my hair grows like crazy.
thanks for the comment. def gonna give this a try!! :D
Hallie 1234 they fit under wigs? Does it look bumpy?
@@TheGummybears101 if you gently tie the threaded sections in a loose ponytail under a wig cape, it wont look bumpy
I'm the same

I personally do this in between braids (e.g box braids) . I prefer to do it when my hair is damp. I first comb out my hair (to avoid the knot's and tangles) then I oil my scalp and the length of my hair, comb it through one more time and then thread it. That way when I take it down the hair is stretched as well as knot free. As long as you don't thread it too tight, your hair won't break.
:) I hope this helps!
i tried it the other day i did it on freshly washed hair with weaving thread and then again on dry hair that i moisturised with water and shea butter and used cotton yarn instead i love the results guys! thanks x
+ZigAndStuff did you prefer doing it on dry or freshly washed hair ? btw, your hair in your profile pic is gorgggggg!
My mum is Zim- she used to do this to my hair ALL the time when I was little- your vid brought back so many memories! :D
Omds as I heard "mabanzi" I hit subscribe ! Finally a Zim youtuber!! 😭
Faith Cee aww thank you so much Faith! Really appreciate you subscribing love and blessings x
Neno naturals is too :)
This is a fantastic protective hairstyle to do during the winter and cold seasons by the way👍🏻
Please do a video showing how u put the wig etc
Esther Jewel _9th_jewel_ great question sis
You inspired me to try this, I think I'm going to do a protective style challenge and keep this style in for 6 months in order to retain 3 inches
First of all; you are a godsend! And you seem like you have such a genuine energy! A pleasant to watch! Ok so...how long do I leave the hair threaded?!
She replied on the comment above yours that she keeps it about 3-4 (days) :)
You can also keep it for whatever amount of time you want, as far as you protect it and wear head scarfs if you're going out. You'll actually know when to take it out. It all depends on you. Hope that helps. :)
Thank you so much for sharing! I've seen many videos on threading but this is the first time I've seen one that demonstrates how to protect your ends.
I'm from ghana my mum does this for me every time I take out my braids
I'm from Ghana too!
I used to get this done when I was younger.
How long do you keep the threading? And what styles do you do while wearing it?
My mama used to do our hair like this all the time, also for school because no chemicals or different hair styles were allowed, we either had it cut short, corn rowed backs or threaded, we all looked the same lol .... I am from Kenya..Great memories...Thanks and God bless
I use stretchy pony tail holders. My hair is med length and looks super short because of major shrinkage I have fine #4b/c hair
My father is Fulani from Senegal and my mother was taught threading. When I was a small child she used to thread my hair. I loved it. We do not need to use heat all the time. Our hair is very versatile.
Can you thread transitioning hair? By the way, your hair is absolutely gorgeous.
yeah
Thank you for reminding me this. I am Caribbean. Growing up, it used to be a thing in some villages. I have never done it , I had long hair back then.
I am going to start doing it for thickened and additional length.
Merci!
does African threading stretch your hair making it longer
Wow, this reminds me so much of my own Mother wrapping my hair as a child! The styles were so much fun! I should certainly try this again. Thanks for sharing! :-)
How would you moisturize your hair while it's in African thread for the 2 or 3 weeks?
same way as you would if you had conrows, just put in a bit more and i would suggest doing the green house technic. put your showcap on after moisturizing, i usually leave overnight..
You are a blessing! Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing this amazing authentic African threading technique.
when you take them out does it make your hair more curly? Also is there styles you can do rather than wearing a wig?
I was wondering same
this is awsome i tried it and my hair is growing alot thank you so much
OMG what school did you go to?? No hair relaxers allowed! Now I want to be a headmistress just to make that rule! Please reply :D
Omg I really hope my school makes that rule :D
+omosexy but how would they know if you've relaxed your hair?
+kimmy_kimxo they can tell because the hair would not become curly again and the texture of the hair changes completely. Trust me it's recognizable for people who know African hair types :D
+omosexy African women do relax hair
It's nice seeing this method being done, my grandma used to do this for me as a child.
I love it! How would you suggest putting a wig over that?
Yes! I have done it for the past two years! I've retained so much length it's ridiculous!
Abigail Lori-Ann you leave it in I think
Great video! I've never seen this but I will try it because I have the same texture as you! I really appreciate this- we really need techniques like this to protect and retain our hair type!
so my hair is relaxed and i want to start my natural transition would you recommend i stretch it this early or wait til im completely natural go ahead and start stretching ?
Lacia Williams
Now. I used to use threading for stretching my relaxers 5-6 months apart, starting as early as 12 weeks post relaxer. Now I'm using it for transitioning 😊 happy growing!
thank you Soo much for this video because now my hair is like 22inches long n I'm still trying to take this All in. ty for the video
I want to try this
+Kayla Payla you should!
I'm so glad when watching this vid. I've been rocking my hair in african threading for the last 3 weeks and i'll keep doing it, and we'll see how it goes.
awesome! hope it goes all well for you :-)
Thank you
You are so pretty and so fortunate that your school didn't allow chemicals; here in America the teachers didn't care what we did to our hair. How does this help grow the hair? I really want to get started doing this.
Because it's a protective style. After it's in you don't have to manipulate it anymore, just keep it moisturized.
Thank you beautiful sis!!! I learn so much from you. I am so humbled that the Lord put you in my life!!!! I love you and your ministry!!! ❤❤❤
WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU GO TO!?!?!? WOOT WOOT to your school!
Love your schools rules. Self love and learning your hair and loving it is always great. Your hair is lovely in this video.
You are so goregous :)

Tnx gal for sharing this.. Am a Ghanaian nd used to wear this kind of hair buh we call it a different name in our language. Going back for my old style
You are very cute. Show us a video where you maintain clear skin.
Thanks for sharing. I wish more of my younger students parents would do this. Simply for the maintenance and avoidance of toxic chemicals as a young age.
c'est super j'adore love it
It's very pretty. God bless you too. I've been doing the beehive braiding and bantu knots all summer. I've had the beehive braids in for at least a month, and have been cowashing and hot oil treating my hair biweekly.
The school where you went didnt allow chemicals in your hair ? My first tought was it was a great school 😂
Jade Fo YES. that's basically what I said

What do you eat in Zimbabwe? You have such beautiful women.
I doubt it's my everyday porridge. I suspect they've got a secret ingredient they're adding to work their genes. Their women are too good to be true.
