Cheers mate so easy i think even id have a clue, I've just bought a multimeter and replaced the battery, im getting a reading of about 14 at 3000 rpm. Im abit wiser after watching your video and atleast I've got abit more clue how to use the multimeter.
Also if You could at sometime show the Lever Start for these 4 Speed's. Have everything to put a Starter on My Bike now. Bought the Lever but can't find anything on video putting in on. Thanks again
Hello should you ever see any continuity between primary and secondary side. Or they should be always separate.. and if you do see continuity on your meter does it mean the coil is bad
Hey man my 2008 rocker has a different ignition coil would you mind showing me how to test that one please or a brief explanation on which pins I test on and what readings I should get? Would appreciate it hey!
You may have a video how to test the four wire 4 pin stator for a 1970 Harley-Davidson big twin or could you direct me to where I could find good information how to test it Thank you
Thanks again Grease for this video. Used it last weekend to confirm I had a fried coil. Then, was able to pass knowledge on when getting a set from my buddy and showed him how to test coils. 🎉
Dude this is so cool to hear. Really makes me happy to hear that it helped confirm that AND that you were able to show another person how to do it. That’s what it’s all about brotha!
Yo Grease! I'm currently diagnosing an electrical problem and need to test my coil. I have a cycle standard (CHROME 12V SQUARE COIL 1948-60 HARLEY-DAVIDSON BIG TWINS). How would i test this coil? I run my multimeter across the top holes where spark plug wires come out of and get a reading of around 17K ohms. When i touch the side terminals on coil I get NO reading as in no ohms on any of the settings. Im assuming this means I have a bad coil?
I have a 2001 kawasaki vulcan vn800a I tested the battery with the bike off and had it in the 13.5 and when I had the bike running it was 15.1 + when reving does that mean my big is charging?
It’s definitely charging at 15.1 however, that sounds a little high depending on how high you’re revving it. Usually if you’re going over 15 I’d want to look up what the factory recommends it to be at. If a regulator goes bad a bike can put too much voltage to a battery and smoke it but maybe on a Kawasaki that voltage is normal
@greasesgarage so I checked again today and recorded it here were my results, key off just battery was 13.3 -key on with headlight on drops to 13.0- idle went up to 13.9 then I gave it throttle "have no rpm guage" to cruising sound from exhaust and it went up to 14.80/14.85-then off gas back to idle it was dropping back down to 13's and I shut it off (key on) headlight on it dropped to 12.80 -key off and removed jumped to 13.10 , are these good ? Had the bike die the other day after riding into work and the old battery was dead , had to buy new battery to get home!
I can’t find the stator on my bike, I have 73-74 xlch sportster and mine doesn’t have a plug that pops out. The regulator has two wires that hook up to the generator and then the housing for the generator is connected to the engine
Me and You may be the only People that put a Cow Pie on an Evol. I put LED's on My Bike. I noticed after Riding for awhile the LEDs started blinking at Idle. Brighten back up when putting Throttle back to it . Did You checks except for the coil do far. I'm hoping it's the battery. I do have the Spyke electronic ignition. Kick start only. The Bike in my Profile. The battery may be a year old but a cheap one. Always had the trickle on it. As I said tho when I rev the bike the lights brighten back up. Everything elec obviously begins draining after Riding for a bit. But even tho when reving the lights brighten back up. Could it be as simple as a bad Battery. When running after a while the battery was showing way below 12v. Any info will help, Thanks for Your Page it's Awesome Brother, Johnny
Hey Johnny, Thanks for the message brotha. Yes I agree, might be the only two crazy enough to take out a 5 speed 😂 As for the electronics, all those symptoms are of a bad battery or a bad stator. I would take that battery to an auto parts store to be “load tested”, it’s possible to have a dead cell or two in a battery and the tender will still say it’s fully charged. Load cell tests are free and will rule that out. Other potential source is the regulator. If the headlight is dimming and surging it sounds like the current isn’t being regulated properly. The regulator could have gone bad on you. Let me know what you find out about the battery

This video made it into my archive folder. Well done Grease.
Thank you!
Fantastic video, well explained for the novice to follow and clear instructions on how to use a multi meter. Thanks!!!!
I just discovered the low life podcast today and heard you mention the UA-cam channel. Awesome stuff man!
Glad you’re diggin it brotha! Thanks for subscribing and please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see a future video on. Here to help 🤘🏼

This is a huge help man. Thanks for making this video.
Really glad to hear it was helpful brotha! Thanks for checking it out. Please share it with somebody you know that needs to check their system haha
2:50 my HD coil has 4 input pins. How do I test this?
Output, you said needs 10,000 ohms.
My meter shows 6 k ohms.
Best UA-cam channel
Thank you Dan! 🙏🏼
@@greasesgarage thank you man, honestly your videos are very helpful even for the experienced, always learning new things-keep it up
😊thank you very much for showing me how to test my stator

I don’t have that piece unfortunately but if I can track one down I’ll add that to the topic list, thanks brotha!

You can test that stator the same way I test this one except you would want to check between all 4 points
@greasesgarage thank you
Thanks a lot for this video!

Okay this is a great video but how do I test the out put of my stator or the voltage regulator itself?

I believe your sportster is a generator motor which is mounted up front. Don’t believe it has a stator. Just a generator and regulator rectifier.
Wat about regulator rectifier can I test that
I will get a video on that in the future
