This is the point that Sisko is either incredibly naive or he’s choosing to be willfully ignorant. The ‘buyer’ that Garak mentions holds a one of a kind item that can’t be found anywhere else, the fate of the entire war hangs in the balance of obtaining this data rod, and then the ‘buyer’ agrees to be paid less than half of the original asking price. Sisko was clearly so tunnel visioned by his desire to bring the Romulans into the war that he couldn’t see what was unfolding right in front of him.
It was part of the plot in the episode where Sisko by controversial methods convinced the Romulans to enter the Dominion War that was going on with the Federation at the time.
There were lots of suggestions about this episode, Garak claimed the gell was the price to obtain a Cardassian Data rod. But others have suggested he was lying, and in fact he already had the rod, and needed the gell to create the organic explosives used to kill the Romulan senator. This was done deliberately with a substance only the Federation controls, to make it seem obvious that it was the Federation that was responsible for the assassination, which in turn Garak knew the Romulans would suspect the Dominion for the attack, as this is exactly the way they'd stage an attack to place to blame on someone else, and that the Federation wouldn't be capable of such an act, or so obvious in their use of clearly Federation based explosives. Needless to say, Garak is a slimy genius.
@@supremeownage8995 It is possible however in my opinion, Garek would already have a plan in place to take of the situation! Garek probably already had a contingency plan in place to prevent Vrenak's ship from returning to Romulus! Garek may have wanted the gel to help Section 31 eliminate the Founder's, not sure when or how the Morphegenic virus was created!
Love this moment. The characters in DS9 handled difficult orders very well. They would balk at them and actually protest before carrying them out. In contrast to voyager, where the crew just accepts Janeway’s nazi orders without showing any emotion.

@@caderly123 That affectation doesn’t apply in all situations. You could very easily use that to harvest organs from one person and give them to 5 people. You cannot do evil that good may come of it. this scene made the episode for me. pulling all the strings together afterward and seeing the tapestry Garak had woven was thrilling.
In my opinion, that's the best episode. Of Star Trek.
Of all Star Trek. Original, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. There are very very few rivals to this episode.
Organic Explosives you say? I should mention that to Garak 😁
Why? He's a plain, simple tailor!
I just looked it up 85 liters is almost 22.45 gallons of that gel 👀

What'd they use it for?

Garak used it to blow up the Romulan shuttle because it’s undetectable and untraceable.

I'll admit that I haven't watched much Voyager due to it being my least favorite Star Trek series, but what do you mean by "Janeway's Nazi orders?"

Not to mention Janeway did not carry herself well in interrogating the Equinox crewman. Chakotay got demoted for challenging her decision
