Just a quick video showing how I fixed a Dyson upright vacuum that only one side of the brush bar would spin. The brush bar axle had broken, or sheared off on one side due to hair getting stuck underneath the axle caps. You can prevent this from happening to you by cleaning and removing the brushes after taking off the sole plate and removing the axle caps with a T-8 Torx bit to remove any hair or fur or debris in there.
You will need a small phillips screwdriver No.1 size
and a T-8 Torx bit if you need to remove the drive axle caps.
The vacuum shown in the video is a Total Clean model number is UP - 13, but this will be the same as many other models like the Upright, Ball, Animal, Allergy, DC65, DC66 and DC40, DC41, and UP20. Some of the models will have different part numbers, so please make sure to double check the fitment guide before you order parts.

Why not just replace the plastic shaft that snapped?

The small plastic gear that snapped isn’t available from Dyson, but that’s a possibility if you can find one. I have seen them on eBay in the past, but I don’t know if they are still available.
