I did this today. Works perfect. Put electrical tape around your swivel adapter to stiffen it up a and make sure you have a 4 inch extension for the lower right bolt. Thanks for the video!
Great video! The one in our shop broke in exactly the same location. MTC makes an all aluminum housing that would seem to correct this problem. Quite similar to the Pentastar 3.6 oil filter housing issue. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
Just completed this job on my drive 4 hours later coolant bleed and no leaks Done it just as instructed in this vid worked a treat Gonna do a coolant flush tomorrow in hunt for the broken plastic
Just above the oil filter housing there is a plastic coolant hose connector that flanges to the block (yes, more plastic attached to the block). These get brittle and crack too. Mine was cracked and leaking onto the oil filter housing so I assumed the leak was from the oil filter housing. I think the only disadvantage of replacing the oil filter housing without taking off the plenum is that you can't see the coolant hose connector and its condition. With the plenum off, it would be obvious. You can get to the three bolts easily with this same method. Those are E8 bolts. You may want to replace it while you are doing the oil filter housing because it will fail eventually, its cheap, and easy once you removed the electronics and carrier.
An experienced BMW technician told me that the reason why Oil Filter housing on B4x engines might leak is that the filter cup was over-torqued during oil filter replacement. The torque is 25 Nm, NOT Ft-lb! It is enough do do once to damage the housing. Well if you done at a quick lube shop once, you know why it leaks now
That is just absurd. No wonder people have seized engines after that operation. People talk about the 'proper' oil priming but really the issue is pieces of that gasket going down the oil hole so easily, or when that gasket fails allowing coolant into the oil. Utterly horrible design. Usually that failure only happens with head gaskets...

How did you remove those two coolant hoses that you just Yada Yada'd over? Especially the one that goes into the charge cooler? Hey man, do you know if there is an upgraded version of the housing? Is there any chance the b46TU got a better version compared to the earlier models? I am in the market for a 21 X3 that has the B46D "aka the TU" version.
As an engineer re-engineer specialist (a non-engineer who has to correct poor engineering) I am very curiously intrigued about this issue and cause. It's very "easy" to say it's due to cheap plastic issue....but that's vague. Are people dumping photos of these failures for reference anywhere by chance? I'm wondering if there really is a single root cause or multiple causes. Engine bay heat trapped by the engine cover, torque issues on filter housing, or engine moving after mount failure allowing that corner area to hit nearby components...etc.
@@MyDailyPerspective it’s because it’s made from cheap plastic in china. They updated it now to aluminum. This is why CFOs should not dictate Engineers in the automotive industry.

I was concerned about the same thing but from what ive been told is the plastic piece gets dislodged inside the oil filter housing but im not too sure how accurate that is considering the piece is very small and can easily go through coolant passage inside the block
