  • On the Alaska state ferry M/V Aurora in Feb. 2011. 14 ft seas, freezing spray, 80 MPH winds in Northern Chatham Strait.

    Was on the Matanuska once, coming up from Bellingham, going through Queen Charlotte Straight there were BIG rollers coming in from the open water, we were _tobogganing_ down them and the bow would crash hard into the bottom of the troughs. We apparently had to go straight out into the open water _against_ the rollers till the Captain gave the order for a hard-over turn in between rollers and we barely made it without taking one to the side. Ferry rides _can_ be fun.
